This is "Soldier" -this beautiful boy was a cruelty case with Metro. He is very sick and in isolation at LVSES. I saw him last night and he sat up and was eating some on his own . He took a downward turn last night - meaning a bit more lethagic . Today is his 11th day in isolation. He is a very sick boy, please pray for him and consider a donation ,if possible. Update from 9/6/11 - "Soldier" Update- Our Dear Sweet "Soldier" who has been in Isolation since being pulled from Metro (12 days) has been confirmed with Distemper, Canine Para-Infuenza , and Mycoplasma. He has been put back on fluids and is on heavy pain meds due to an Eye Ulcer (possible)Descemetoceles that came up at 5:00 am last night. We are all saddened and will consult with other Dr.'s today. There is a piece of sunflower seed shell hanging from its beak as it eats the seed.

This species lived only in Mexico and west of the Rocky Mountains until they were introduced to the eastern U.S. about 1940.

In 1994 in Virginia and Maryland house finches were first observed with this bacterial respiratory infection that usually causes them to starve as they become too blind to find food. The disease primarily only effects house finches, but goldfinches can also acquire the disease. It became an epidemic, but is becoming less common as the species seems to be evolving a resistance as those that get the disease usually die before they can reproduce.

The disease is assumed to have come from domestic poultry which also can have the disease.

The native population of house finches that are west of the Rocky Mountains apparently do not get the disease, which perhaps implies they have a genetic resistance that was initially missing from the population in the east which initially came from a very small set of escaped birds in or near New York City.

Two years ago I saw several with the disease. Last year I saw none. This year I have noticed two, or perhaps the same bird twice.

The introduced house finches have been displacing the native purple finches in spite of their disease problem. They also successfully compete with the introduced English house sparrows

The White Trilliums can be infected by a Mycoplasma bacterium, which causes variable green stripes. There are many diseased plants in Longwoods Road C.A. near Delaware. The disease may be spread by insects to other nearby trilliums and will eventually kill the plant.

3. DE TEELT VAN CRANBERRIES

3.1. ALGEMEEN

De grote of Amerikaanse cranberry (Vaccinium macrocarpon) is inheems in de noordoostelijke staten van de USA en de oostelijke provincies van Canada. Het is een bodembedekkend, groenblijvend gewas dat van nature groeit in moerassige gebieden waar het weinig concurrentie ondervindt van andere planten. De plant maakt 50 tot 100 cm lange uitlopers.

Hierop ontstaan het tweede jaar vanuit de bladoksels verticale scheutjes (zogenaamde "uprights") van 5 tot 10 cm. Deze groeien in de volgende jaren verder. Het onderste gedeelte ervan zakt echter tegen de grond, waardoor het gewas nooit hoger wordt dan 12 tot 20 cm. Aan het uiteinde van een "upright" ontstaat in de zomer (na 1 juli) en in het daaropvolgende voorjaar de bloeminductie in een gemengde eindknop. Bloei vindt eind juni plaats, zo'n 30 dagen na het begin van de hergroei. De bloemen wijzen naar beneden.

Bij volle bloei zijn de kroonblaadjes naar achter gevouwen en is de stijl tussen de meeldraden doorgedrongen. De bloem lijkt dan op de kop van een kraanvogel (Engels: crane). De oorspronkelijke naam was dan ook Craneberry, later verbasterd tot cranberry.

De vruchten rijpen 2 tot 4 maanden na de bevruchting. Ze verkleuren van groen via wit naar rood. Vaak ligt er een wasachtig waas over, waardoor de vruchten soms bijna zwart lijken. De vruchten laten in de herfst niet vanzelf los van de plant, maar blijven tot in het volgend voorjaar aan de plant zitten. De bladeren krijgen in de herfst, bij het in rust gaan, een rode tot bruine kleur die in het voorjaar weer verdwijnt (2).

Teelt van cranberries vindt vrijwel uitsluitend plaats in de USA en Canada. In de USA bedroeg het areaal in 1985 circa 9.000 ha met een productie van ruim 171.000 ton en een productiewaarde van enkele honderden miljoenen guldens (2,3).

In Europa zijn in West-Duitsland en Polen wel enkele pogingen gedaan met de teelt van cranberries te beginnen, maar het is tot dusverre niet verder gekomen dan enkele proefbeplantingen (7).

Aardig is te vermelden dat de cranberry in Nederland op het Waddeneiland Terschelling voorkomt. Volgens de overlevering zouden in 1840 na schipbreuk van een Amerikaanse schoener een of meerdere gesloten vaten op het strand van Terschelling zijn aangespoeld en door strandjutters gevonden. De vaten werden, uit angst voor de douane, pas in de duinen geopend. De inhoud viel echter tegen: de rode bessen waren zuur en wrang en de vaten werden in de duinen geleegd (6). Aanvankelijk werden alleen de vegetatieve delen van de plant gebruikt als materiaal voor bezems en brandstof voor bakkersovens, pas later werden de bessen geoogst. Aan het eind van de vorige eeuw verpachtte de gemeente cranberryvelden in enkele duinvalleien aan particulieren. Na de komst van Staatsbosbeheer op Terschelling werd in 1909 de vrije pluk afgeschaft en werden alle velden aan een drietal personen verpacht. Er was daarna sprake van een gericht beheer: onkruid werd gewied, de velden werden regelmatig met een dunne zandlaag bedekt en als bescherming tegen wintervorst na de oogst onder water gezet. Ontwatering door Staatsbosbeheer leidde later echter tot (gedeeltelijke) verdroging. In de tweede wereldoorlog ontstond een achterstand in het beheer. Veranderende opvattingen over natuurbeheer leidden later tot

een verdere beperking van toegestane beheersmaatregelen. Zo werd in 1963 voor het laatst bezand; na 1975 was bezanden niet meer toegestaan. Het areaal werd in 1980 56 geschat op circa 50 ha. Hiervan is slechts 5 ha vrijgesteld van de beperkende voorwaarden. Tegenwoordig worden de bessen nog steeds geoogst, nu door de firma Bolt. De vruchten worden met de hand geplukt, waarbij zogenaamde harkbakken worden gebruikt.

Een oogstmachine is in het hobbelige terrein nauwelijks bruikbaar. De productie schommelt van jaar tot jaar nogal en bedraagt gemiddeld zo'n 30 ton.

3.2. BODEM EN BEMESTING

Opvallend is het oppervlakkige, fijne wortelstelsel van de cranberry dat geen haarwortels kent (2). Dit geeft aan dat de cranberry zich heeft aangepast aan vochtige, ondiepe bewortelingsmogelijkheden en dus afhankelijk is van een erg goede vochtvoorziening. De veen of moerasgronden waarop de cranberry van nature groeit, hebben een lage pH (4 tot 5).

Het gewas tolereert echter zelfs een pH van 3,5 en groeit in een voedingsoplossing ook nog goed bij een pH van 6,5. Bij een pH tegen de 7 en hoger vertoont het gewas ijzergebrek en treedt chlorose op. Overigens is inmiddels gebleken dat de cranberry ook op zandgronden goed kan gedijen, mits een goede vochtvoorziening maar gewaarborgd is.

Belangrijk voor het slagen van de teelt is verder dat voldoende water beschikbaar is voor bescherming tegen nacht- en wintervorst, voor bestrijding van droogte en voor de oogst.

Een perceel moet uniform van samenstelling zijn, vlak liggen en enigszins aflopen om een snelle waterafvoer te garanderen. Het moet voldoende ver boven het grondwater liggen om snel weer lucht in de bodem te krijgen. Tenslotte moet voldoende zand voorhanden zijn om nu en dan te kunnen bezanden.

Aanvankelijk kon in proeven geen positief effect van extra bemesting worden aangetoond.

In 1931-'32 bleek dat de cranberry, evenals de blauwe bes, de voorkeur geeft aan ammoniakstikstof boven nitraatstikstof. Later bleek dat de plant nitraatstikstof helemaal niet of nauwelijks kan opnemen. Bij een goed gebruik van ammoniakstikstof verbeteren groei en bladstand vrijwel direct, wat leidt tot een verhoging van de productie. Te veel stikstof geeft echter een te welige groei en is daardoor nadelig voor de productie. De behoefte aan fosfor zou erg gering zijn. Een bodemvoorraad van 65 kg P2O5 per ha zou voldoende zijn.

Ook de behoefte aan kali zou gering zijn; dit element is in de grond waarop het gewas groeit of waarmee wordt bezand, ruimschoots voorhanden (2). Opvallend is wel dat Liebster (7) nog meldt dat mengmest met veel fosfor wordt gebruikt, namelijk mest met N, P en K in de verhouding 1:2:1 tot zelfs 1:6:1. Over de behoefte aan spoorelementen is niets bekend (2).

In nieuw geplante percelen wordt, als de stekken eenmaal zijn beworteld, tot september om de 2 tot 3 weken wel 16 tot 22 kg/ha ammoniakstikstof gegeven (3). In oudere percelen wordt de stikstofgift wel afhankelijk gesteld van de groei van de "uprights". Is de groei daarvan minder dan 5 cm dan moet 35 kg N per ha worden gegeven, bij een groei van 10 cm 17 kg. Is de groei van de "uprights" meer dan 10 cm, dan is geen aanvullende stikstofbemesting nodig. De bemesting kan half mei worden gegeven, zowel als vaste meststof als met de beregeningsinstallatie. Steeds vaker wordt half mei een halve hoeveelheid gegeven, aangevuld met de andere helft net voor de bloei (half juni). Soms wordt dan eind juli nog eens 5 tot 10 kg N per ha gegeven voor het beter uitgroeien van de vruchten (3).

In een aantal weinig bemeste Canadese percelen werden de volgende gehaltes aan mineralen in het blad gevonden:

- N 1,39 tot 1,81% (gemiddeld 1,60%);

- K 0,54 tot 0,58% (gemiddeld 0,56%);

- Ca 0,45 tot 0,61% (gemiddeld 0,50%);

- Mg 0,15 tot 0,18% (gemiddeld 0,16%);

- Mn 295 tot 675 dpm (gemiddeld 449 dpm);

- Fe 89 tot 267 dpm (gemiddeld 136 dpm).

De bladmonsters werden midden juli genomen van volwassen blad aan het middengedeelte van jonge scheuten (9).

3.3. RASSEN

De meeste rassen zijn nog steeds afkomstig van in wilde populaties geselecteerde planten. Belangrijk bij de selectie zijn vooral vruchtgrootte, productiviteit en rijptijd. Hoewel in de loop van de tijd meer dan 150 rassen zijn geïntroduceerd, bestaat ongeveer 90% van de Amerikaanse productie uit de rassen Early Black (42%), Howes (21%), Searles (21%) en McFarlin (13%). Dit zijn allemaal "wilde" selecties. Kleinere oppervlaktes zijn beplant met uit veredelingsprogramma's afkomstige rassen Bergman, Stevens, Wilcox en Crowley en met enkele andere "wilde" selecties (3).

De belangrijkste soorten kunnen, in volgorde van rijptijd, als volgt worden omschreven

(3,5,7).

EARLY BLACK, werd rond 1852 geselecteerd.

Dit ras is het meest geteelde ras in de USA. Het heeft een vlotte groei met weinig en dunne uitlopers en korte "uprights". De bladeren zijn klein en heldergroen. Het ras is matig productief en rijpt vroeg (eerste helft september) met matig grote, erg donkerrode, wat peervormige vruchten. Het heeft een uitstekende verwerkingskwaliteit, maar bij normale bewaring een matige houdbaarheid. Is gevoelig voor nachtvorst. Early Black is resistent tegen

"false blossom", en wordt weinig aangetast door diverse insecten.

CROWLEY (McFarlin x Prolific), uitgegeven door Washington State University. Groeit matig tot sterk met heldergroen blad. Het ras heeft een hoge en regelmatige productie. De vruchten rijpen vroeg en zijn matig tot groot en rond tot ovaal met een rode tot donkerrode kleur. Ze zijn door het hoge kleurstofgehalte erg geschikt voor verwerking.

BERGMAN (Early Black x Searles), in 1961 door het USDA geïntroduceerd.

Dit ras rijpt middentijds (eind september) en is erg productief. De bessen zijn slechts matig gekleurd, maar hebben een uitstekende verwerkingskwaliteit, zowel voor moes als sap. Is weinig gevoelig voor vruchtrot, wordt in de teeltgebieden niet bezocht door de cicade die "false blossom" overbrengt.

SEARLES, geselecteerd in 1893. Is de hoofdsoort in de staat Wisconsin.

Dit ras heeft een middelsterke groei en maakt weinig uitlopers. De "uprights" zijn sterk, de bladeren middelmatig groot en heldergroen. Het ras is erg produktief en rijpt middentijds (eind september-begin oktober) met grote iets ovale vruchten die een doffe donkerrode kleur hebben. Het heeft een goede bewaar- en verwerkingskwaliteit.

STEVENS (McFarlin x Potter), in 1950 door het USDA geïntroduceerd.

Het heeft een forse groei met sterke uitlopers en is erg winterhard. Het rijpt middentijds (eind september-begin oktober) en is erg productief. De bessen zijn groot en prachtig donkerrood en hebben een goede bewaarbaarheid.

HOWES, rond 1843 in het wild gevonden.

Groeit krachtig met groot, donkergroen blad. Is laatrijpend (oktober) met wat langwerpige vruchten (23 mm lang, 18 mm breed). De vruchten hebben een glanzend helderrode kleur en kleuren bij bewaring nog goed na. Ze hebben het hoogste pectinegehalte en een erg goede verwerkingskwaliteit. Een nadeel is dat het ras erg gevoelig is voor het mycoplasma dat "false blossom" veroorzaakt.

WILCOX (Howes x Searles), in 1950 geïntroduceerd door het USDA.

Het is erg groeikrachtig. Dit ras rijpt laat (als Howes) met donkerrode vruchten. Het is resistent tegen "false blossom".

McFARLIN, in 1874 geselecteerd.

Is langs de westkust van de USA veruit het hoofdras, maar wordt ook elders geteeld. Het heeft een gedrongen groei met korte "uprights" en matig grote, vrij heldergroene bladeren. De productie is vaak middelmatig, maar in Brits Columbia is de productie goed (5).

Het ras rijpt erg laat met grote, maar wat onregelmatige vruchten die donkerrood geoogst moeten worden. Dit ras heeft een goede bewaar- en verwerkingskwaliteit. Het is resistent tegen "false blossom".

3.4. VERMEERDERING

Cranberryrassen zijn niet zaadvast. Vermeerdering van een ras kan dus alleen langs vegetatieve weg plaatsvinden. De uitlopers van de cranberry kunnen in juli - augustus gemakkelijk gestekt worden, waarbij de opgaande scheutjes worden gebruikt. Een goed stekmedium is een 3 : 1 turf-zandmengsel. Bij een temperatuur van 20 tot 25 °C en een hoge relatieve luchtvochtigheid (dus in tunnel of kas) wortelen de stekjes binnen 4 weken. Zodra beworteling is opgetreden, moet in toenemende mate gelucht worden, zodat de planten

afharden. In het voorjaar kunnen de jonge plantjes dan buiten worden geplant, waar ze in 3 tot 5 jaar een volledige bodembedekking kunnen vormen (4).

Voor het inplanten van de grote percelen in de USA en Canada wordt veelal rechtstreeks maaisel van oudere percelen met de hand of machinaal ter plaatse gestekt (zie ook Teeltmaatregelen) (3).

3.5. TEELTMAATREGELEN

- Algemeen

Voor de aanleg van nieuwe beplantingen wordt in de USA plantmateriaal verkregen door het gewas in een bestaande beplanting (van het gewenste ras) af te maaien. Het maaisel wordt onder vochtige omstandigheden naar het in te planten veld gebracht.

Daar wordt het machinaal in stukken van 8 tot 60 cm gesneden en met de hand of machinaal geplant. Wordt met de hand geplant dan worden 3 tot 4 stekjes bij elkaar in de grond gestoken (6 tot 10 cm diep). De bosjes stekmateriaal worden op onderlinge afstanden van 25 tot 40 cm of als het materiaal erg schaars is, zelfs op 60 cm gezet. Bij machinaal planten wordt het stekmateriaal over het perceel verspreid en daarna met een soort schijfeg in de grond geduwd. Wordt met de hand geplant dan is veel minder materiaal nodig dan wanneer machinaal wordt geplant.

Na het planten kan het perceel even ondiep onder water worden gezet, zodat de grond goed rond de stekken aansluit. Beregening in de periode na het planten kan, zeker in warme periodes, de aanslag van een nieuw perceel sterk verbeteren. De planttijd is mei, behalve in het westen van de USA, waar ook met succes herfstplanting wordt toegepast

(3).

Bij het in cultuur brengen van de cranberry zijn de Amerikanen overgegaan tot het maken van sloten en dijken in de percelen. Doel was de watervoorziening beter in de hand te krijgen, waarschijnlijk in de eerste plaats om uitdroging in de zomer te voorkomen.

Omdat bij temperaturen tussen -29 en -40 °C, zelfs zonder uitdroging knoppen en bladeren afsterven, is het nodig de planten tegen dergelijke lage temperaturen te beschermen.

Gebleken is dat de planten zonder schade lange tijd onder water kunnen staan. Daar waar nodig is, worden de planten 's winters onder water gezet. Het zuurstofniveau bepaalt in belangrijke mate de veiligheid van de onder water gezette planten. Zit er te weinig zuurstof in het water dan verstikken de planten.

De periode die de planten onder water kunnen staan, is verder afhankelijk van de temperatuur. Bij lage temperatuur gaat het langer dan bij hoge temperatuur. Ook is de hoeveelheid licht die de bladeren nog kan bereiken, van belang. Bij voldoende licht komt door fotosynthese nog enige zuurstof vrij.

In Wisconsin worden de percelen onder water gezet als men verwacht dat het water binnen 2 dagen zal bevriezen. De eerste waterlaag is meestal 5 tot 7,5 cm. Volgende lagen worden daaraan toegevoegd tot alle scheuten ingevroren zijn. Eventueel vrij water in sloten en onder het ijs wordt weggedraineerd. Het risico van zuurstofgebrek is het grootst in het voorjaar als het vrijkomende water niet direct kan worden afgevoerd of als vrij water ontstaat onder de isolatie door een dicht pak sneeuw. In de oostelijke staat Massachusetts worden de percelen pas onder water gezet als de plant wortels bevroren zijn en lage temperaturen en uitdrogend weer verwacht worden. Het water wordt ook hier zo snel mogelijk

weer afgevoerd.

Tegenwoordig worden percelen niet alleen gedurende enkele maanden in de winter onder water gezet, maar ook bij nachtvorst en zelfs bij de oogst (zie aldaar). In gebieden waar onder water zetten in de winter niet noodzakelijk is (Washington en Oregon) en waar minder goed water beschikbaar is, wordt beregening gebruikt ter bestrijding van nachtvorst en droogte.

Nachtvorstbestrijding is nodig ter bescherming van de jonge "uprights". Daaraan moeten de bloemen komen. De bloei zelf valt pas in juni.

Tegenwoordig wordt tegen nachtvorst, zowel in het voor- als najaar, meestal beregend. Hoewel dat bescherming zou geven tot een temperatuur van -10 °C, wordt als een zo lage temperatuur verwacht wordt, waar dat mogelijk is, meestal toch bevloeid. Onder Nederlandse omstandigheden zal beregenen waarschijnlijk voldoende bescherming bieden.

In de zomer kan met korte beregeningsbeurten wat afkoeling worden verkregen. Vooral tijdens de bloei kan dat de activiteit van insecten bevorderen. Bovendien kan beregenen

in de zomer nodig zijn om de bovenste 10 tot 15 cm van de bodem vochtig te houden.

Alvorens percelen bedijkt kunnen worden, moeten ze vlak gemaakt worden en moet de drainage (sloten) in orde gemaakt worden. De grootte van de percelen hangt samen met ligging van het land. De bovenste grond- of vegetatielaag (circa 15 cm) wordt verwijderd en gebruikt om de dijken te vormen. Gewoonlijk wordt voor het planten nog 5 tot 10 cm zand aangebracht om het onderliggende veen te stabiliseren. Een goede, vlakke ligging is van groot belang om 's winters en bij de oogst een overal gelijke waterstand te hebben.

Lang geleden is ontdekt dat een keer in de 3 tot 4 jaar bezanden met 1,5 tot 2,5 cm grof zand de wortelvorming bevordert. Daardoor wordt de vorming van nieuwe "uprights" gestimuleerd. Andere voordelen zijn een betere lichtreflectie, een steviger ondergrond voor de machines, verbetering van de drainage, wat minder vorstrisico en het vasthouden van het veenmateriaal bij bevloeien. Meestal wordt in het late najaar of het vroege voorjaar bezand. In Wisconsin wordt het zand vaak gedurende de winter over het ijs gestrooid.

- Bestuiving

De cranberry is zelfverdraagzaam. De stempel kan al bevrucht worden op het moment dat ze tussen de meeldraden doorgroeit en nog enkele dagen daarna. Het stuifmeel moet echter wel door beweging van de bloem (wind of insecten) losgemaakt worden. Uit enkele proeven is gebleken dat kruisbestuiving de zetting en het aantal zaden per vrucht positief kan beïnvloeden. Uit praktische overwegingen worden echter altijd grotere oppervlaktes van een ras geplant. De positieve invloed van insecten op de productie is overduidelijk aangetoond. Het advies is daarom 3 tot 5 bijenvolken per ha te plaatsen.

- Snoei

Een goede belichting van de afzonderlijke "uprights" is van groot belang voor een goede productie. Een overvloedige groei van uitlopers over het gewas en te veel "uprights" zijn daarom nadelig. Daarom wordt vaak een niet selectieve snoei toegepast door met verticaal werkende messen een deel van de uitlopers en wat "uprights" af te snijden. De afstand van de messen en de rijsnelheid van de machine bepalen de mate van snoei (3).

3.6. OOGST EN AFZET

Vooral het met de hand oogsten van de losse bessen vormde aanvankelijk een probleem. Aan het einde van de vorige eeuw werd de plukprestatie aanzienlijk verhoogd door het in gebruik nemen een soort kam met een opvangbak. Hiermee worden de vruchten van de struikjes gekamd of geharkt. Toen men zich realiseerde dat de vruchten in water drijven, ging men er in de omdijkte percelen toe over onder water te oogsten en de vruchten in het water uit de percelen af te voeren. Door dit onder water oogsten worden de plukverliezen sterk beperkt. Immers, vruchten die anders tussen het dichte gewas vielen, worden

nu mee afgevoerd. Voor het onder water oogsten zijn in de loop van de jaren steeds betere machines ontwikkeld. Vooral na 1950 heeft het machinaal oogsten een grote vlucht genomen, zowel bij droog als nat oogsten. De rommel die bij het machinaal onder water oogsten meekomt, wordt afgezeefd via een grove zeef die alleen de bessen doorlaat. De natte bessen worden voor de bewaring gedroogd. Toch hebben nat geoogste bessen in het algemeen een slechtere bewaarbaarheid dan droog geoogste. De meeste nat geoogste bessen worden daarom direct gesorteerd en ingevroren voor latere verwerking.

Droog geoogste bessen en een klein deel van de nat geoogste worden bestemd voor de verse markt en bewaard bij een temperatuur van 0 tot 5 °C. Onder gewone bewaaromstandigheden zijn de vruchten zo 2 tot 3 maanden houdbaar.

Omdat een goede vruchtkleur erg belangrijk is, wordt soms enkele weken voor de oogst met middelen gespoten die de kleuring bevorderen (onder andere ethefon). Bij een bewaartemperatuur van 10 °C of hoger kleuren de vruchten in het algemeen nog verder.

De vruchten hebben een goed vitamine C-gehalte. Dit varieert van 23,8 tot 38,2 mg per 100 g versgewicht en 170 tot 300 mg per 100 g drooggewicht. Het vitamine C-gehalte lijkt rasgebonden en ligt wat lager dan dat van vossebessen De vruchten worden nauwelijks vers gebruikt (vroeger tegen scheurbuik), maar veelal verwerkt. Daarbij treedt een verschuiving op van verwerking tot gelei en compote naar verwerking tot puur of gemengd sap. De intensief rode kleur van het sap is afkomstig van de natuurlijke kleurstoffen in de vrucht(schil).

3.7. ZIEKTEN, PLAGEN EN ONKRUIDEN

Voor de meeste ziekten en plagen bij de cranberry zijn er geen Nederlandse namen. De hierna volgende namen zijn, voor zover mogelijk, afgeleid van de in de literatuur gevonden Amerikaanse en Duitse namen.

Een ziekte die vele jaren voor grote problemen heeft gezorgd, is "false blossom". Deze ziekte wordt veroorzaakt door een mycoplasma (een organisme tussen een virus en een bacterie) dat door een cicade (Scleroracus vaccinii of blunt-nosed leafhopper) wordt overgebracht. De ziekte verspreidt zich snel met aangetast plantmateriaal, maar is tegenwoordig geheel onder controle doordat de cicade goed bestreden wordt. Aangetaste planten vertonen een heksenbezemachtige groei met rode bloemen die rechtop blijven staan en

niet zetten.

Verder zijn er verschillende schimmels die de cranberryplant kunnen aantasten, zoals de roze-bloesemziekte (Exobasidium oxycoccus) en rodebladvlekkenziekte (E. vaccinii).

Deze schimmels tasten respectievelijk scheuten en bladeren aan. Mycosphaerella nigromaculans (zwarte-vlekkenziekte) en Gibbera compacta (G/bbera-vlekkenziekte) veroorzaken zwarte bladvlekken. Bij het ras Searles veroorzaakt Gibbera compacta ook een vlekkenziekte op de vruchten. Andere schimmels die ernstige aantastingen van scheuten en takken kunnen veroorzaken, zijn Lophodermium oxycocci (afsterven van "uprights") en

een Phomopsis-soorX (afsterven van scheuten).

Schimmels die de vruchten aantasten, veroorzaken echter de grootste problemen. Zogenaamd vroeg vruchtrot wordt veroorzaakt door Guignardia vaccinii en verwante soorten.

Tijdens de bewaring komt vruchtrot (laat rot), veroorzaakt door Godronia cassandrae, het meest voor. Tijdens gewone bewaring voor de verse markt kunnen de verliezen door deze schimmel oplopen tot 30%. De vruchten worden op het veld geïnfecteerd, maar het rot treedt pas later op. Als de vruchten direct na de oogst worden ingevroren, blijft de schade erg beperkt. De schimmel Ceuthospora lunata veroorzaakt zwartrot, waarbij de aanvankelijk stevige bessen verschrompelen en uitdrogen. Andere vruchtrot veroorzakende schimmels zijn van minder belang (3).

In cranberrypercelen komen vele soorten insekten voor. Slechts een aantal daarvan kan zodanige schade veroorzaken dat een bestrijding nodig is. Bij de schadelijke insekten hoort een aantal bodeminsekten. In de oostelijke staten veroorzaken onder andere Phyllophaga anxia (white grub, een engerlingachtige), Lichnauthe vulpina, Anomala lucicola en de Rhabdopterus picipes (cranberry rootworm) schade. In de westelijke staten veroorzaakt de Brachyrynus sulcatus (black root weevil) de meeste schade.

Een galmug (Dasyneura vaccinii) en de black-headed fireworm (Rhopobota vacciniana) kunnen aan bladeren en scheuten veel schade (vreterij) aanrichten. Andere soorten "fire worms" (rupsen van vlinders, die aan bladeren vreten en deze mineren) kunnen veel schade aan het gewas veroorzaken. Bij ernstige schade ziet een perceel er kaal en bruin uit.

De cranberryfruitmot (Acrobasis vaccinii of cranberry fruitworm) is de meest voorkomende en ernstigste plaag bij de vruchten. De vrouwtjes leggen eitjes onder kroonblaadjes. De larfjes vreten zich de vrucht binnen bij het steeltje, waarna ze de ingang met een

fijn zijden web afsluiten. Ze eten een tijdje van het vruchtvlees en verhuizen dan naar een volgende vrucht. Een larfje kan zo tot 6 vruchten aantasten.

Omdat de cranberry weinig concurrentie verdraagt, vormen onkruiden een belangrijk probleem. Een goede onkruidbestrijding is dan ook noodzakelijk. Daarbij wordt in de meeste gevallen gebruik gemaakt van herbiciden. Verder is het regelmatig maaien van de dijken van belang.

I apologize for not responding earlier to those of You that have written me.

I started out fighting what I thought was bronchitis after I had a Flu shot in November. The coughing and congestion continued through December until the evening of the 22nd, when I suddenly had a high fever. I kept that until a Doctor was in (the Emperor's Birthday was the 23rd and Doctor's Offices were closed) on Friday. I was given a Flu test (stupid... I had received the Flu shot at the same office) and was told it came back negative--AND that in spite of the high fever, it must just be a common cold.

I then suffered just the same (while taking medicine) through the weekend until I was able to go to a Doctor in Kawasaki on the following Monday, who then told me that I must have Mycoplasma Pneumonia and should be hospitalized for at least a week. I had already missed watching my sons open their Christmas presents, as I could barely move from the bed and had slept nearly every living moment from the time I first got the high fever--so I really resisted, as I didn't want to spend New Year's alone in a hospital.

The Doctor then reluctantly gave me more powerful medicine (take for 3 days... then it stays in the body for 7?) and said if I got worse, I should hope that not only would a Hospital be open, but also that it would have a bed available. I didn't do much for my entire Winter break, as I spent it sleeping, sitting in a Doctor's Office and/or taking medicine. I only went out a couple of times to test if I was better (I wasn't in any of the cases) and I have only just returned home... because I have to return to work. I still don't feel 100%, but the medicine seems to have helped and I really hope that I don't have a 2nd, more difficult bout with whatever I actually had (and still feel like I might have, fighting to come back).

The White Trilliums can be infected by a Mycoplasma bacterium, which causes variable green stripes. There are many in Longwoods Road C. A. near Delaware. The disease may be spread by insects to other nearby trilliums and will eventually kill the plant.

This is my beautiful hen Twinkle. She has had a mycoplasma infection, which is being treated, leading to the puffy face you see here.

But, but, but... they're so pretty! Sorry, but trilliums with green stripes have been infected with mycoplasma bacterium. A mycoplasma is a form of bacteria that lacks a cell wall. As the infection spreads in successive years the stripe widens until the whole petal may be green. This infection eventually impairs the reproductive ability of the infected plant and prevents successful seed production. Darn!
