Sold in the European market 1998-02 and the Australian market 1999-04, Built as a sucessor to the Mazda MX6 based Ford Probe. The Cougar was based upon the Mondeo. Launched in 1998 Cougar was sold and built in the United States. Although cars destined to be sold in Europe and the UK were finished in Ford's Köln plant in Germany, where the cars had European specification lighting installed, Ford badges applied and in the case of UK and Australian cars, converted to right hand drive, in the US it had different branding, in this case being branded as the Mercury Cougar, while in Europe and Australia it was known as the Ford Cougar.
The Cougar came equipped with the 2.0 litre (16v) Zetec or 2.5 litre (24v) Duratec V6 engines with two specification levels, largely equivalent to a Mondeo Ghia (standard) and Ghia X (simply X).[2] Manual and automatic transmissions were available. All variants came with 16" alloy wheels as standard. The 2.0 litre version had 130 PS (96 kW; 128 hp) as standard, while the 2.5 was rated at 170 PS (125 kW; 168 hp).[
In the United Kingdom, Ford unveiled the car at the British Grand Prix at Silverstone in 1998.

As a more recent car I was hoping this one might still be around, but strangely it seems to have been taken off the road before either of the 626 coupes with DVLA saying it's been untaxed since 2001. Written-off in an accident perhaps?
The Thames van parked alongside it suggests it might have been attending a show or auction/autojumble?

A very nice looking MX6. I know they're still about in the UK but I remember the last time I saw one it took me a while to remember its name, given how off the radar they'd been for me.
Japanese market brochure. We had these in North America, but they didn't sell nearly as well as the Ford Probe, made in the same factory, Flat Rock, Michigan. Made from 1991-97.
Been scanning a few old photos this eve. Some are a little poor on the quality side, but interesting nonetheless. I'll try to edit & upload some of the better ones over the next few days.
First off we have a Micra Colette, owned by one of my Mother's friends in the early 90's. I think she had this for a while before changing to a Mazda MX6 in the mid 90's. It replaced a rather nice white Cavalier Mk2 estate, which she found too heavy to drive.
DVLA suggests it was exported in 1998. Wonder if it's still going...

The first generation Ford Probe was introduced in 1989, as a sports compact, and was fully based on the MazdaG-platform, as used by the Mazda MX-6. using unique sheet metal and interior. The instrument cluster and pop-up headlight mechanisms are borrowed from the FC RX-7.
The second generation introuced in 1993 saw a complete new design. As before, the Probe was to share its under-structure with Mazda's MX-6 and 626. Mazda engineered the engine, transmission, and chassis, while Ford engineered the body and interior. Technically, the second generation Probe is 60% Mazda and 40% Ford. The new car was both longer (2 inches) and wider (4 inches) than the earlier generation model, though it weighed in 125lbs lighter. It went on sale in Europe in Spring 1994. Ford had been hoping to sell around 20,000 Probes each year in Britain as the car market recovered from the effects of the recession from 1992, but in its three years it only achieved a grand total of around 15,000 sales
By February 2016, just 718 examples of the Probe were still in use in Britain
