I had a nice chat with the wife of the owner of this. They've owned it since 1998, it's been off the road since 2007 but they can't part with it due to sentimental reasons (which I won't disclose). It's covered 76k and is in great condition for being off the road so long.
Despite the appearance of the front plate recess, this MX6 was apparently UK-registered in August 1993.

I've only seen a few of these MX-6's. I wonder why they're kinda scarce. Note the Ford Tempo Coupe beside.

Sold in the European market 1998-02 and the Australian market 1999-04, Built as a sucessor to the Mazda MX6 based Ford Probe. The Cougar was based upon the Mondeo. Launched in 1998 Cougar was sold and built in the United States. Although cars destined to be sold in Europe and the UK were finished in Ford's Köln plant in Germany, where the cars had European specification lighting installed, Ford badges applied and in the case of UK and Australian cars, converted to right hand drive, in the US it had different branding, in this case being branded as the Mercury Cougar, while in Europe and Australia it was known as the Ford Cougar.
The Cougar came equipped with the 2.0 litre (16v) Zetec or 2.5 litre (24v) Duratec V6 engines with two specification levels, largely equivalent to a Mondeo Ghia (standard) and Ghia X (simply X).[2] Manual and automatic transmissions were available. All variants came with 16" alloy wheels as standard. The 2.0 litre version had 130 PS (96 kW; 128 hp) as standard, while the 2.5 was rated at 170 PS (125 kW; 168 hp).[ The 2.5 V6 Duratec engine was updated from June 2000 with its dissplacment reduced from 2544cc to 2495cc
In the United Kingdom, Ford unveiled the car at the British Grand Prix at Silverstone in 1998.

A lovely example which I've seen a few times around my work.
I really like these and the Ford Probe which it shares a floorpan and drivetrain with. I honestly couldn't choose between them if I had to.
