The Alox models, as well as being slightly longer, have thicker tools, and a stronger construction (wider rivets), than their 91mm cousins, additionally, the Alox handles are much tougher than Cellidor, so this family is designed for harder use than the Cellidor models. In fact, in the early days the Pioneer was known as the Sturdy Boy and even up until roughly 2017 the Pioneer series was labelled as the Sturdy Models on the Victorinox website.

The celebrated Alox scales have reached a near cult status, thanks to their unique surface which is pleasing to both hand and eye. The appeal of Alox is in its merging of aesthetics with functionality – its attractive embossed surface make the knife both lightweight and easy to grip, and the hardened oxide layer helps to protect against damage and corrosion.
After being punched from aluminum and embossed, Alox scales go through a process called Eloxal which uses anodic oxidation to create a protective layer. It is this final layer which allows for the coloring of the scales.
Alox has a strong significance in the history of Victorinox. First introduced for the Pioneer knife in 1957, Alox was a key feature of the Soldier’s Knife which was redesigned in 1961 and used until 2008. Today, we issue a Classic pocketknife with Alox scales in a different color every year. These limited edition knives are highly sought-after by design aficionados and collectors, showing the true timeless appeal of this iconic material.

Victorinox makes Alox knives using a process called **deep drawing**. Deep drawing is a metal forming process that uses a punch and die to create a three-dimensional shape from a flat sheet of metal.
The first step in making an Alox knife is to cut a sheet of aluminum to the desired size. The sheet is then placed in a deep drawing die, which has the shape of the knife's handle. The punch is then pressed into the sheet, forcing it to conform to the shape of the die.
Once the handle is formed, the blade is inserted into the handle. The blade is held in place by a rivet, which is pressed into the handle. The rivet is then peened, which is a process of hammering it to expand it and lock it in place.
The final step is to anodize the knife. Anodizing is a process that creates a protective layer on the surface of the metal. This layer helps to protect the knife from corrosion and wear.
Here are the steps in more detail:
1. **Cutting the sheet metal:** The first step is to cut a sheet of aluminum to the desired size. The sheet is typically 0.8mm thick.
2. **Deep drawing the handle:** The next step is to deep draw the handle. This is done by placing the sheet metal in a deep drawing die and then pressing it into the shape of the die with a punch.
3. **Inserting the blade:** Once the handle is formed, the blade is inserted into the handle. The blade is held in place by a rivet, which is pressed into the handle.
4. **Peening the rivet:** The rivet is then peened, which is a process of hammering it to expand it and lock it in place.
5. **Anodizing the knife:** The final step is to anodize the knife. Anodizing is a process that creates a protective layer on the surface of the metal. This layer helps to protect the knife from corrosion and wear.
The Alox knife is a popular choice for EDC knives because it is durable, lightweight, and corrosion-resistant. The deep drawing process used to make Alox knives ensures that they are strong and reliable. The anodizing process also helps to protect the knives from the elements.

January 17, 2010--Spent the day helping Daniel take apart an old laptop in order to repurpose it as a wall-mounted computer. Of course, while he was taking occasional pictures of the process, I was too absorbed in the fun I was having taking things apart and tinkering that I didn't think to take any pictures myself. So I took a picture of my tools. These are mostly the things that I use when working on electronics; my home repair tools are mostly in a drawer in the kitchen (which is nowhere near as organized).
In the compartments, left-to-right, top-to-bottom you see (and sometimes don't see):
Small pliers, bit driver, screwdriver/level/flashlight multitool
DVI-VGA adapters
PS-2-USB adapter, power supply Y-adapter, silver thermal compound
Random screws, jumpers, batteries and other parts
Static strap, LED flashlight, multimeter
Cable splitters, coax input switch
Scrolling LED badges, security bit set, nylon wire ties, velcro wire ties, ruler
Funny story about the pink case: Yes, it's a Caboodle. Yes, I've had this since about 1988 or so. If I could change its color easily, I would; I haven't really much cared for pink since around 1990. Nonetheless, this case has held everything from Barbie clothes to art supplies to makeup to tools. In other words, it's useful.
Active Assignment Weekly for 4th - 11th January: Pimp my 'Puter
Pimp my 'Puter is a successful chain of computer super stores. We are opening a new store in a retail park on the outskirts of your town early in the new year. We sell everything related to computers, including electronic components, circuit boards, processors, mice, keyboards, computer tables, office chairs, software, CDs, and even cases with neon go-faster stripes for the gamerzz.
We need pictures of our products for the glossy catalogue that will be distributed to all households in the area. Your task is to make one of these pictures. You chose the product, but your picture must show the item as being desireable and must make the heart of any geek race faster than a water-cooled terraflops GPU.
Feel free to use as much or little post processing as your heart desire.

Dare: Turn the picture into a humourous ad
WIT: Balanced my Leatherman Multitool on a black foamcore and positioned it near a window for lighting. Took a separate photo of a flash drive to get the same lighting. In PSE, I cloned out the file and added in the flash drive and text.

Sometimes more networking tools, depends on the need. Other times I swap out the T30 for my iBook. The camera and knife gets swapped out too. Small CaseLogic CD case with essential tools. Original iPod earbuds for when I don't need the isolation of the ER6i.

The gummy face was very creepy. It actually felt like you were eating a face. Everything was contoured pretty perfectly. The plastic it laid on top of was skull shaped, which affected how it felt a bit. We ate the eyes out first, and then simulated our simulation of the cheek-pulling-off scene from Ichi The killer (Carolyn's cheek was sore for days).
We got some gift cards that we're going to use for our birthdays and anniversary.
The multi-tool actually came in use for something minor when we were installing the attic ladder.
The mini martinis were delicious -- except pomegranate was kind of foul. They made for a fun night.
We used the Spider-Man napkins and plates during Clint's birthday party.
Getting the DVD of the next Tim & Eric season is quite awesome, as we usually haven't seen their DVD extra, which are often Grade A hilarity.
And the 3 restaurant gift cards will be used, as usual, for Clint's birthday, our anniversary/Valentine's day (10th/14th), and Carolyn's birthday.
The novelty brain/tongue/roach/poo were put on our food during Clint's birthday party, during which someone moved the fake poo to the top of the toilet, where it now remains.
The glow in the dark stars will be added to our galaxy in our bedroom... Maybe we'll put some in the kitchen too?
That portable bowl is going to be VERY handy for Carolyn when we go camping! It has already been assimilated into Carolyn's camping backpack, so she won't have any chance of forgetting it.
Christmas ornament, Hoorah For The Bra, Simpsons rubber bands, Spider-Man plates, Super Nintitdo shirt, The Simpsons, Tim And Eric Awesome Show, Great Job! DVD, book, brain, candy canes, coasters, cockroach, gift cards, glow in the dark stars, gummy face, mini martinis, multi tool, portable bowl, shit, tongue, wood skull.

That’s right, I’m headed to the Amazon Rainforest in Peru tomorrow and here’s all the stuff I’m taking. This will be my first trip outside of the US by myself and I’m a little nervous but still very excited. It was my goal/resolution to start traveling more and this is the first step. It’s going to take me 2 days to get there and I will be there for 5 days and it’s going to take me another 2 days to get back. Obviously there will be limited contact and no internet but I am planning on taking lots of photos. See everyone when I get back!

My slightly improved, outside of work carry list. Just put a new paint job on the pistol. Its now Duracoated color 45 "combat black". The original bluing was scratched in a few places and the rubber grips I had on it trapped some moisture, causing a problem with the lower starting to rust. I'm rather happy with how the new paint job looks and now it won't rust. Added a zippo instead of the matches, as I'm still shopping around for a good set of them to carry after a failed fireworks outing July 4th this year.
