This Long-billed Dowitcher was photographed near Utqiaġvik, Alaska, during breeding season, standing tall on a tundra perch like he was auditioning for a solo in the Arctic choir. And he was. Males take the high ground to deliver rapid, piping calls—keek-keek-keek-keek-keek!—part love song, part turf warning. Rivals are notified. Females, ideally, are swooning. If not, well—he still looks fabulous doing it.

Dowitchers are shorebirds engineered for mud. Their bills don’t just stab and slurp—they pinch. The flexible tip works like forceps, able to grasp prey deep in the muck without opening the beak and filling it with sludge. It’s like using chopsticks with built-in fingers.

Inside those bill tips are Herbst corpuscles—pressure-sensitive nerves that detect the faintest wiggle from prey hiding below the surface. Even when they can’t see the food, they can feel it moving.

He’s a performer, a mud-prober, and a living multitool—proving once again that Arctic love songs are better with tweezers.

The name FliK relates to a unique feature of this multitool - the pliers can be extended single-handedly with a flick of the wrist.

The blades must be opened conventionally, though - but this makes this tool "street legal" in Germany.

die kleine Nadel so zu positionieren das sie im Magnetfeld aufrecht steht ist zwar ein Geduldspiel, aber knifflige Aufgaben zu lösen war schon in meiner Kindheit und im Berufsleben mein Ding...

Macro Mondays: "EDC"

A multitool is a great everyday carry item.

The image is about 5 cm (2 inches) on the long edge.

With a Gerber "Flik" multitool. Watch is on a blue NATO band and in full darkness, lit up by reduced power flash, the lume is impressive.

Macro Mondays: Everyday Carry

"This week, set your wallet/keys/phone aside and check your pockets or purse for the lip balm, pocket knife, lighter, flashlight, inhaler, multitool, floss, whistle, etc. that's always with you when you walk out the door."

For me this would also be glasses and a book, good thing I usually carry a big purse! :) Sometimes when you are waiting at an appointment or being on your lunch break it is good to have a book to read.

Thanks to all for your visit! HMM!

In search of clues on the whereabouts of the missing child, Strix uses his multitool scanner to search the cargo containers for any trace of DNA to prove she'd been moved through here

(Well, that got dark quick - I took a pic of Strix with his scanner. Cool, huih?)

Cheers, and HMM.

Victorinox multi tool Swiss Army Knife. Converted into negative. Taken for the week 43 theme "Tools of the trade".

The lowly toothpick is a small stick. The toothpick originates to some extent as a larger stick. Larger sticks have many uses as tools: for supporting stuff, as an offensive weapon, as a defensive weapon, a spit for toasting a marshmallow, or cooking an egg over a campfire. The toothpick also has uses other uses other than picking teeth. It may be used as a single-pronged fork to pick up a piece of cheese or fruit, as a means to pin meats together for cooking / roasting purposes, or even as a means to keep the lid from sliding off your burger. (too late in my case.) It can be used to test the doneness of baked goods, as a balloon popper, to build a model or statue, to transfer tiny bits of glue, or a miniature flag pole. I am sure there are myriad other uses for the lowly toothpick you all can come up with. Many animals use sticks, large and small.

This is a small multi tool that I won in a Christmas cracker once upon a time - without a doubt the most useful thing that ever came out of a cracker. For Macro Mondays 'Tool' theme.

Does loads of stuff. Finger nipping useful.

Many thanks for all views and fav's - particularly comments!

All are greatly appreciated!

Happy Macro Mondays to you all!

Every Day Carry - EDC. Multitool EDC. Macro Mondays

#macromondays #EDC

The latest #macromondays challenge #EDC prompts me to share this picture with you.

"Smint Peppermint" likely refers to a specific type of breath mint or candy called Smint, which features a peppermint flavor. Smint is a brand of sugar-free breath mints known for their small, round shape and packaging. These mints are often used to freshen breath and provide a cool, minty flavor. Peppermint is a common flavor in breath mints due to its refreshing and aromatic qualities.

So those peppermint candies are for sure a EDC in my pockets. You never know when you have to be ready for a sweet kiss 😋

"Everyday Carry" (EDC) refers to the items that individuals choose to carry with them on a daily basis. These items are typically practical, functional, and serve various purposes, such as addressing everyday needs, emergency situations, or personal preferences. EDC items can vary widely from person to person based on individual lifestyles, professions, and priorities.

Common examples of EDC items include:

Wallet: For carrying identification, credit cards, and cash.

Keys: Essential for accessing homes, vehicles, and other personal spaces.

Phone: A ubiquitous tool for communication, navigation, and various applications.

Multitool: A compact tool that combines multiple functions, such as pliers, screwdrivers, and knives.

Flashlight: Useful for emergencies or when additional lighting is needed.

Pen and Notepad: Handy for jotting down notes or making quick sketches.

Watch: For keeping track of time without relying solely on a phone.

The specific items in an individual's EDC kit can depend on factors like personal preferences, profession, location, and the perceived need for preparedness in different situations. Many people curate their EDC items to suit their daily activities and potential challenges they may encounter.

Common Red Soldier Beetle (Rhagonycha fulva) : These beetles are a great multitool! They work well as natural pest control, as they eat smaller insects such as aphids, which can often be a nuisance in gardens. They also help to pollinate many open structured flowers. They are a highly beneficial insect, supporting our gardens as well as playing an important role in the ecosystem. From Insect Week, Royal Entomological Society. Seen here on a Field Bindweed flower. /

Two rovers today. I wanted to use that old M-Tron chassis, and wanted the rover to have those long, floppy arms. Didn't fit together, so I made a second one.

Toy Project Day 3486

For this photo, I re-created a shot from an old photography magazine.

Contents of a tool pouch I wear whenever I leave home. The items include a Leatherman Wave multi-tool, a small but extremely bright LED flashlight, a slim reversible-tip screwdriver, and a larger, double-ended reversible-tip screwdriver.

The multi-tool was not inexpensive, but a practical investment that has earned its keep numerous times. The double-ended screwdriver (blue cap, upper right) was a promotional giveaway which continues to serve its purpose much better than I expected from such a seemingly cheaply-made gadget.

This Bottle Opener is part of an 11 piece multi-tool consisting of knife, fork, spoon, saw, awl, scissors, file, corkscrew. screwdriver, hole punch, and one other smaller knife.

Never used any of the tools during my camping days, but it was great to know that I had them!
