History note:
Originally any small table served as a surface for various activities such as writing or playing cards. But by the 18th Century furniture makers were designing furniture for specific purposes to meet the needs of a more educated and sophisticated society. This table is a superb example of the craftsmanship and ingenuity of 18th Century designers - one small table unfolds to provide specially designed tables for 5 different activities!
Indexed in:
This table was featured on the ABC's Collector's programme, Episode 33, shown Nationally on 03/11/05.
Summary:
Multi-purpose table: side table; tea table; card table; games table; reading stand. The table has three tops which fold one on top of another to form a small side table. The table tops are shaped with square projecting corners to accommodate candle sticks. The card table is covered in green baize, and the games table is inlaid with different coloured woods to provide for playing Chess and Backgammon. The table has five legs with one which swings out to provide a support for the table tops when they are opened out. A triple action hinge and adjustable support allow the table to have a flat surface no matter which top is in use. The two front legs are cabriole, with carved decoration of acanthus leaves and blue-bell drops, and ball and claw feet. The other three legs are plain with round pad feet. The body of the table contains an adjustable reading stand, and incorporated into the left hand side of the table is a small drawer which swings out, and provides several small wells to house different game pieces.

This garden was made by Italian architect Nicola Spinetto. Before the transformation, it was a neglected backyard garden and now it's a wonderful multi-layered landscape. Designed in collaboration with Daniele Mainetti, this layered garden is located at the back of a family home in the town of Chiavari on the Italian Riviera.
This Pop Up Garden give new life to a steep outdoor area. The garden features luscious terraces made from untreated Douglas Fir, a shaded eating area, a small kitchen with an oven and a decking floor for the family to enjoy.
