1954 OSCA MT4 "barchetta"

The 1954 OSCA MT4 stands as a testament to the craftsmanship of the Maserati brothers, who in 1947 had founded the Officine Specializzate Costruzioni Automobili, or OSCA, which specialized in competition sports cars. Born in Bologna, this iconic sports racing car wasn't just a machine; its low weight and high power rendered it a symphony of speed and ferocious tenacity – one which would etch its legacy on the tracks of Italy and beyond.

The data that I have on this very car is that between 1954 - 1956 it participated in 8 races, and taking first place in half of those! The 1.5 liter, 4 cylinder, twin overhead cam engine produced 125hp. In 1984 it also participated in the Mille Miglia, but the source did not indicate how, or where it finished

long Sulphur toning MT4 with exhausted chemistry, no bleaching

As mentioned earlier (see hidden lith) a 2nd developer after Ith developing reduces the colour. Due to the overexposure for the lith process a 2nd developer must be strongly diluted. Meritol is a devided developer concentrate, I took only 2,5ml A solution to 1 litre of water, because there is enough alkali in the paper after lith development. As expected the print darkens rapidly during less than 2 minutes, but there is still some colour. Like it or not, but such a treatment is a good base for a Polysulfide toning.

MT4 Siena 1+30 30 seconds. The toning will progress in the final wash, because this kind of toner still works at dilutions over 1+500.

This toner still works at dilutions above 1+1000. Therefore toning progresses during the final wash. That´s why the toning should only be done briefly until all values have taken on a bluish tone.

The final shades of yellow and green only appear during washing.

From the highest point of the Mont Vully nature reserve, you can enjoy a unique view to the south over Lake Murten, the Swiss Plateau, the Pre-Alps, and the Alps rising majestically on the horizon. To the north, you can see Lake Neuchâtel and Lake Biel, as well as the Jura mountain range.

Mont Vully has a magical appeal, and you can really feel a special energy on this hill. The wind seems to have a special relationship with the landscape, and the enchanted forest paths could have come straight out of a fairy tale.

The OSCA Story

In 1937, Ettore and Ernesto Maserati were forced to sell Maserati after financial turmoil. However, the contract with the new Maserati owner Adolfo Orsi meant that the brothers had to remain with their former company for a ten-year term. In 1947 they were finally free to go their own way; Officine Specializzata Costruzioni Automobili, (aka OSCA) Fratelli Maserati was founded and the first vehicle type, the MT4, was built. In its original form, the chassis and engine were based on the Maserati Tipo 4CL single-seater racing car, first built in 1939. Development of the MT4 began immediately, using plans and parts from the Maserati 4CL. In all, OSCA built 77 chassis between 1949 and 1956.

OSCA's first automobile was the MT4, for Maserati Tipo 4 cilindri. The initial cars used a Fiat 1100 block and the engine developed 55 hp (40 kW). OSCA soon developed a new 1,092 cc engine, which produced 72 PS (53 kW; 71 hp) at 6,000 rpm, had a in-house designed aluminum block and alloy head. Some sources state that 9 cars were built with 1.1-liter engines. Originally a single-cam design, in 1950 this was changed to a twin-cam unit, indicated by using the name MT4-2AD, with "2AD" signifying 2 Alberi di Distribuzione (twin camshafts). The 2AD was originally available as an 1100 or a 1350. The bore and stroke changed over the years and to allow competing in various classes, meaning that the displacement of the engines increased from 1092 cc via 1342 cc and then 1453 cc until finally reaching 1492 cc. The four-speed quick-shift gearbox was also an in-house design. The bodywork on early models was a two-seater roadster with or without cycle fenders, lights, and the various other accoutrements required to make it street legal. OSCA only supplied the chassis; the bodies were manufactured by Italian bodywork companies (or in some cases, by the buyers themselves) to the requirements of the individual buyers. Modifications and changes to keep cars competitive or due to changes in taste means that few preserved cars look much like each other.

While the original barchetta design was factory built, coachworkers such as Morelli, Moho, Vignale, and Pietro Frua soon supplanted the in-house design. In addition to the barchettas, a few examples were built with berlinetta bodies by Frua and Vignale. A Vignale-bodied MT4 Berlinetta won in the 1,100 cc class at the 1953 24 Hours of Le Mans.

Sometimes Holga cannot be tamed, especially when she is fed with less well known material.

It is in the nature of things (Holga with fixed aperture and exposure time) that one or the other exposure is a "little" off the optimum. With thin and low-contrast negatives, it is nevertheless possible to enlarge to fixed-graded (also overlaid) papers if a high-contrast developer is chosen.

In this case Shedlight (Forte) G2 with SE5 Lith. Toner MT4 Siena (Potassium polysulphide) 1+50 1 minute.
