Northern Lao PDR is home to a host of traditional craftsmanship. Slim skirts with hand-embroidered diamond motifs or woven textiles dyed shades of blue, or handbags of knotted jungle vine. Textile handicraft training was held for 120 villagers (95% of them women) in 6 villages. More training and more links to buyers of rural arts mean more income for women.

A team of independent monitors find evidence illegal logging in Taman Hutan Raya-Forest Park, Indonesia. One of the core focus areas of the FAO-EU FLEGT Programme has been establishing and strengthening independent third-party on the ground forest monitoring. Indepedent monitoring increases transparency in the forestry sector and empowers local communities to participate in good forest governance.
The FAO-EU FLEGT Programme’s partnership with the Independent Forest Monitoring Fund (IFMF) aims to strengthen forest governance through the establishment and training of indenpendent monitors who are instrumental in ensuring compliance with the Indonesia Timber Legality Assurance System (or SVLK). The Programme has received widespread public support, however there remains a need to increase the capacity and reach of independent monitoring in Indonesia.
Since the start of Phase III in 2016, the Programme has supported 17 projects in Indonesia, amounting to approximately USD 1.8 million, primarily focusing on supporting MSMEs, strengthening SVLK implementation and conducting independent forest monitoring.

Kantha for the Bengali folks means embroidered qulit. Kantha is said to be 'Dorukha' meaning turning the worn out and old textiles and fabrics to things of beauty. It is the way the stitch is used, in different arrangements, that forms the complex vocabulary of Kantha.
A Kantha is often referred to as a rural woman's diary as it reflects the rural woman's personal account of her life's events and happenings.
Kantha embroidery has led to socio-economic empowerment of thousands of women of Birbhum. Department of Micro, Small & Medium Enterprises & Textiles (MSME&T), Goverment of West Bengal in partnership with UNESCO, is developing a Rural Craft Hub at Nanoor.
Simple run stitches at the hands of skill artists create a magical artwork called as 'Kantha Embroidery'. Kantha making is a 'women's art'. It was the bengali housewife who helped the art to evolve.
The origin of the Kantha craft traces its history to a period not less than a thousand years. since then the tradition has come a long way today when the artistic brilliance of the women artists have found expressions in lifestyle products like saree, dress materials, bed and cushion covers etc. Motifs of nature including animals, birds and flowers are extensively stitched and the art work varies from intricate and heavy to light and simple designs.
There is a large concentration of the women doing Kantha embrodiery in Nanoor block of Birbhum, West Bengal. Around 2000 women of this area are engaged in doing katha embrodiery on different products. About 600 kantha artists are included in the Rural Craft Hub.

An independent monitor investigates evidence of illegally felled timber in Halmahera, North Maluku Province, Indonesia. In conjunction with Forest Watch Indonesia, the Programme partner KPA Bokimaruru used on-the-ground and GIS monitoring to collect evidence of illegal logging on central Halmahera - the findings of this investigation were later presented to the North Maluku Provincial Forestry Office's proesecution department in Sofifi. Operations such as these are an important step in the verification of operator's compliance with forest sector legislation and increase sector transparency.
