Winifred Ellen Cornwell with her father-in-law and her children
This photograph was taken in the garden of 3 Green Hill, Little Thetford in Cambridgeshire, on a summer day in July 1938.
Winifred Cornwell (1904-83) was my grandmother. She was born at Dry Drayton in Cambridgeshire, the daughter of a horse keeper. In this photograph she is 33 years old. She is shown here with her father-in-law William Huckle Cornwell, aged 72, and with eight of her nine children.
Seated in the middle of the group is Stanley Arthur James, known as Jim. On his lap is a two year old girl, his sister Marion, my mother.
In front of them sits Cecil. The beautiful girl in the white dress to the left of them is June. The three boys standing at the back are Malcolm, Jack and Reggie. My grandmother holds her youngest and final child Edmund, known as Sonny, in her arms. Not in this photograph is another daughter, Betty, in hospital as a result of contracting polio.
Jim was killed in 1944, while serving on HMS Respite in the Second World War. Cecil died in his sleep in March 1990. June, Malcolm, Jack and Sonny all still live in the Cambridgeshire fens. Reggie died in 2001. Betty died in hospital in the 1980s.
Today, my mother is 73, and lives in the city of Cambridge.
