NASA image acquired: June 03, 2012
This scene is to the northwest of the recently named crater Magritte, in Mercury's south. The image is not map projected; the larger crater actually sits to the north of the two smaller ones. The shadowing helps define the striking "Mickey Mouse" resemblance, created by the accumulation of craters over Mercury's long geologic history.
This image was acquired as part of MDIS's high-incidence-angle base map. The high-incidence-angle base map is a major mapping activity in MESSENGER's extended mission and complements the surface morphology base map of MESSENGER's primary mission that was acquired under generally more moderate incidence angles. High incidence angles, achieved when the Sun is near the horizon, result in long shadows that accentuate the small-scale topography of geologic features. The high-incidence-angle base map is being acquired with an average resolution of 200 meters/pixel.
The MESSENGER spacecraft is the first ever to orbit the planet Mercury, and the spacecraft's seven scientific instruments and radio science investigation are unraveling the history and evolution of the Solar System's innermost planet. Visit the Why Mercury? section of this website to learn more about the key science questions that the MESSENGER mission is addressing. During the one-year primary mission, MESSENGER acquired 88,746 images and extensive other data sets. MESSENGER is now in a yearlong extended mission, during which plans call for the acquisition of more than 80,000 additional images to support MESSENGER's science goals.

1-No matter what each day brings and no matter where I am I take a nap – every day.
2-At 23 I started a special event business that ultimately led me to planning and co-ordinating corporate events at the Olympic Games.
3-I retired at 40.
4-One day, bored at home, I thought to myself ‘I’m going to the Mayor’s office to meet him.’ So I did and I was let in. He still calls me.
5-I know who and what I am and am more than comfortable and happy with both.
6-There is a streak of adventure in me and I’ll often test my limits. Flying Trapeze School, learning to fly a twin engine airplane, hiking to the top of the Franklin Mountains one day each week I'm in El Paso…to name a few. Dancing across the mountains on the moon is still on my list.
7-On Christmas Eve 2008 a really cool “gift” arrived in the mail – a contract from a publisher for my first book. (**Update** My book was released October 2009 and remains one of the best selling books for my publisher**) My new book is in production now.
8-When I wanted to learn more about photography I contacted a photographer from Vogue Magazine and the photographer responsible for album/cd covers for Pink Floyd, the Muse, Peter Gabriel, et al. and asked if they would teach me. They both said yes and still check on my progress.
9-A pill I take each and every day keeps me alive and I will continue this until there is a cure, but the virus i have doesn’t stop me from living the way life should be lived.
10-I say what I mean, mean what I say, and expect the same from others.
11-Hope one day very soon we can return to generally good manners, and a sense of style.
12-I end each day thankful, and promise myself the next will be a good one. Typically it is.
13-American born in Illinois, grew up in Tripoli Libya (North Africa), some how ended up in El Paso Texas, but also make my home in London.
14-Think every man should read, learn and take to heart Rudyard Kipling’s poem “IF”
15- I never regret the things I've done only the things I haven't though I rarely pass up an opportunity to have any such regret.
16- To top my list of wishes I would want time to be my friend as in this life there is still so much to dream and discover.

Here I am comparing seeing the window by direct (reflected) light, versus backlighting (transmitted light). First in in a room brightly lit by morning sunlight, then against a window with indirect sunlight shining through it, then reversed window with transmitted light. Front lit, you can see the molding on the frame much better, and the black dividing lines give the window a three dimensional look, but it looks like a painting rather than a stained glass window. Back lit, it looks much more like a stained glass window. By indirect sunlight, the colors are muted compared to the front lit window, and it looses the three dimensional aspect, as the frame and dividing lines are now flat looking. It looks much more like a stained glass window now. Finally, another shot of the window with direct sunlight shining through it.
I just received the Beauty and the Beast Window Replica from the Disney Store. It is part of the Art of Disney Theme Parks Collection. It came in a large carton that was long and wide but thin, 28'' x 18'' x 4''. It weighed in at 10 pounds, with the item itself weighing a hefty 7 pounds. It was very well packaged in a styrofoam padded box. The window was in perfect condition, except for a very small unpainted spot near the top of the rose, which I didn't notice until I held it up to the light.
Despite what the Disney Store description says, the replica is actually made of glass, not resin. It is a single pane of thick glass that is painted over, divided into sections by a thick black material. A real stained glass window would be made of sections of differently colored pieces of glass that are held together by lead. Since this replica is actually made of glass, and the paint is a relatively thin coat, it is translucent and looks very much like real stained glass when back lit. The colors are very bright and applied very evenly, except for a small bald spot that I mentioned earlier. It comes with hanging hardware, but I don't think I will actually hang it on a wall. Instead I will simply prop it up against a wall, when I find a good spot to put it. I don't have a Beauty and the Beast nook yet, but I may have to create one in order to display this amazing work of art properly.
