Sunset over Tucson, Arizona, USA as seen from a very dirty lens low on Mount Lemmon.

Probably better large.

photos from a drive up the Mt Lemmon Highway on the Coronado National Forest outside Tucson, Arizona

On July 16 2014 I joined the Sabino Canyon Volunteer Naturalists led hike on Mt. Lemmon. We hiked the loop formed by the Mt. Lemmon Trail and the Meadow Trail (formerly the Power Line Road and the Lemmon Park Trail) at the top of the mountain.

Hand held flash.

Some textures I found on the old Air Force equipment on top of Mount Lemmon, Arizona.

Riding along the east side of Mount Lemmon near Tucson, Arizona on what is known as Reddington Road.

1980 Pre-Tourist boom, the Alpine inn and summerhaven, a refuge. Mount Lemmon Creek overflowed during a Monsoon storm, littering the main street with debris. Remnants of a previously burned lodge from 1977 still remain on the R/H side of the picture. If you go to the NEXT image taken after the fire, and when reconstruction was well underway, you can see the less than desirable "improvements" that have been made and the stunning loss of trees. The Alpine Inn was never rebuilt after the fire. Right before the fire I visited Summerhaven. It had no visitors, it was nice and cool and the Owner of the inn and I spent time loafing around and drinking coffee on the Inn's deck out front.

Or maybe not, I'm thinking that those antenna don't look right. Long-horned bee, perhaps?

On July 29 2015 I joined Ned and the gang on one of the summer Mount Lemmon hikes. We hiked the loop formed by the Mt. Lemmon Trail and the Meadow Trail (formerly the Power Line Road and the Lemmon Park Trail) at the top of the mountain.

Olive warbler is in its own family, although it was once lumped with other warblers. It's the only member of the family Peucedramidae. Normally I wouldn't post an image so hidden by foliage, but it's really the habitat for this bird, and the best I've been able to do.

This is at 9000+ feet. In Tucson it was 101 degrees, up here it was high 60s/low 70s. It's a great escape from the valley heat.

There used to be a nice forest service map on here, at the top of incinerator ridge on Mount Lemmon. Now, you see this.

The Whitetail Campground Site 5 had a very nice campfire ring with a ring of concrete around it for people to sit and socialize. We spent quite a bit of time there ourselves.

Josh below Windy Point on the Catalina Highway on Mounta Lemmon, far above Tucson on a blustery day. It snowed a few hours later.

A brief attempt at astrophotography at Windy Point Vista. It was cold, windy, and people nearby were a bit inconsiderate leaving their parking lights on.

Another image from my travel to Tucson. This one languished while I moved to a new laptop. This was processed with GIMP to combine two shots - one for the sky, one for the foreground. The formation known as "Hitchcock Pinnacle" appears near the middle of the image. This picture was taken at about 6500 feet elevation after a short hike from the road.
