Part of the continuing story of the Lancaster X-Files/Fringe event.

I've been working on this special effects clip for about a week now.

Behind the scenes trivia:

The clouds and the snow covered mountains are the Canadian Rockies, shot by me with my D3100 over the interior of British Columbia out of a jetliner window.

The Lancaster is actually a die cast metal model that I bought in Ottawa, Ontario at the Canadian War Museum.

The space ship is a Matchbox toy stealth fighter jet that I bought for $5 at a department store last week to be a model in this video.

The smoke coming out of the plane is actually steam from a tea kettle.

#TrekWars: Something I worked on most of the day today, with some help from my brother-in-law Paul Eric, here in my micro-ILM-esque studio. Good way to stay inside and stay warm on a freezing day. Also a good way to piss off two (possibly three) groups of #scifi #geeks..... #StarTrek #StarWars #mashup #crossOver

The installation Type Case is a low-resolution display with 125 rectangular pixels of different sizes. These are formed from the reflecting light of digitally controlled LEDs, embedded in each section of a European printers’ type case. Due to the standardized fragmentation of its compartments, the density of visual information is decreased towards the objects’ centre. Viewed close by, it is nearly impossible to recognize more than a flicker – however after moving some distance away, it becomes distinguishable, that the lights and shadows give a representation of the latest headlines.

Additional Information:

2010, Installation, printers’ type case, containing one LED in each of the 125 compartments, Arduino, Processing, TLC5941.

An f/x ode to one of my favorite sci-fi movies growing up in the 80s: Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan. Probably one of the best Trek movies in all the series. Definitely Shatner and cast at their best. And probably a much better film than the reboot a couple of years ago. To me, there will only ever be one Khan, and that's Ricardo Montalban... but hey, I'm an old fart, so I'm biased. Shot this video with my old 1990s MPC model kit of the Enterprise.

Title: Little Wanderer: A Rainy City Tale

Description: Step into a whimsical micro-world where a small, adventurous mouse clad in denim overalls navigates the rainy urban jungle. This short clip captures the atmosphere of a wet city evening, featuring cinematic bokeh lighting, detailed fur textures, and realistic water reflections. Watch as our tiny protagonist interacts with autumn leaves and splashes through puddles, blending storybook charm with photorealistic animation.

This project is an exploration of the latest capabilities in generative AI, focusing on character consistency and environmental physics.

Technical details: Images generated by Midjourney V7. Video generated in RunwayML. Video editing done with CapCut.

The great Chinese magazine IDN called us to create the opening for its new DVD, attached to its print version. The main topics of its 19th launch were mappings, projections, 8bits and pixels, and we decided to put everything together inside a blender and to start mixing! The result was a Latin-American cocktail, highly explosive, full of color, and with a great rhythm thanks to our Daft Plenty VJ!

It was the nice challenge. With a very little time we had to improvise and make something interesting that it mixes all these topics, taking in consideration the mapping technology.

The origin of the Open was a corporeal Pixel. Yes! A 50cm white wood cube on which we projected and mapped a pure motiongraphics explosion! Full of patterns and geometric forms re-adapted to the 8-bit world, inspired on the magic latinamerican ponchos and acient indigenous graphites to culminate with the IDN logo soaked in these colorful patterns.

Here's an animated Valentine's Day card that I made for my wife.

Unfortunately, whatever rendering format I used (and I tried 7-8 different ones), Flickr video always made the video really pixellated and grainy. So I decided to dump one of the frames here and put the real video over on YouTube where it seems to work.

Here is the link to the video: youtu.be/jFt75OZG8z4

Happy Valentine's Day to all you out there.

Cheers,

Movietime!

This is the follow-up to the previous channel theme piece I posted a while ago.

This is currently flighting on tv screens as I speak.

This was pretty intense on the visual fx side of things.

We had to do some kind of follow-up to the previous theme piece that still entailed these 'magic bubbles' but take it into a different direction. I ended up going through how many films and tv shows that were in the months-to-come line-up and make the idea work.

It was fun and I'm quite happy with the results.

The most challenging parts of this job entailed building a 'New York-esque' cityscape in 3d, tracking and extending an existing shot, compositing 3d bubbles all the while with the hope of achieving photo-realism.

Enjoy!

;)

Mnet 'Urban Bubbles' movie

PS: I'll be posting a link to a VFX breakdown sequence showing some of the work that went into the making of this little production sometime soon.

A bit of Hallowe'en 2014 fun.

Thanks for watching!!

Rainy day here in Moncton today, so I came up with this: an imaginary flight over the Gulf of St. Lawrence, somewhere between Nova Scotia and Newfoundland. Royalty free music from CCMixter.org: "So Long Since I Held You (Lilac Mix)" by vo1k1:

ccmixter.org/files/vo1k1/53776

Here's another special effects music video that I whipped up today. It was another dull grey rainy day here in Moncton today and I'm on vacation this week so I took the opportunity to go outside in the rain around our place with my D7100, its rain gear, and my tripod to shoot various rainy day scenes around the yard. Once that was done, I started putting this together. I have a thing for cubes, but this time the cube faces are made of strips of rainy scenes that have been slowed down. The cube is my first 1080p cube shot with my D7100. I made sure that the cube was perfect with no seams. The music is by a UK band from the 90s - The The - fronted by Matt Johnson. This song is "Kingdom of Rain" from the album "Mind Bomb". This song is a duet with Irish singer Sinéad O'Connor who has a very powerful voice. Admittedly this f/x video isn't as trippy as my last one, but it was fun to make. Enjoy!

We like the floral quality of this one.

These are some posters that we put together for a series back in March. The focus was all about bringing out types and shadows of Jesus that are seen in modern superheroes that most everyone seems to love today. Each week our Pastor focused on the particular characters, pulling out certain attributes from each one that were clearly characteristics of Jesus.

Each week we had a video that kicked off the sermon that would highlight each hero, as well as a quick teaser at the very end of service for the next week. If you want to see these videos check out the links below:

The video portion of this project was a lot of fun to work on because it really helped to push our 3D titling abilities, and was a ton of fun to get to edit and piece together. It also helps that our church building is located in an old movie theatre. So our main auditorium has 2 large projection screens that helped really make this series a lot of fun.
