My son has been raising mosquitos' in the garden. It was time to get a picture of the offspring. These shots were a real headache! I wanted to use natural light but Wales was not bathed in sun.
Best viewed large.
An Autumn late afternoon/early evening. Only just enough breeze to make the cobwebs shimmer. Starting to get a bit chilly. Mosquitoes dancing in the air backlit by the setting sun.

Discovered a pair of coupled mosquito hawks under the tent's awning. One of the guests was about to swat at them until I threatened to tell his kids to hose him down next time he and his wife were in such a position. I think he understood the implication when I put it in those terms...

A gruesome member of the Evil Horde, Mosquitor sucks the blood of the living like an insectile vampire!

The mosquito-borne disease Chikungunya causes fever and joint pain, which can be severe and lasting. Large outbreaks have occurred in Africa, Asia, Europe, and the Indian and Pacific Oceans, and recently, the Americas.

"A Separate Little War: The Banff Coastal Command Strike Wing versus the Kriegsmarine and Luftwaffe" by Andrew Bird gives more infomation...
Every day for nine months from September 1944 to the end of the war, young British, Commonwealth and Norwegian airmen flew from Banff aerodrome in northern Scotland in their Mosquitoes and Beaufighters to target the German U-Boats, merchantmen and freighters plying along the coast and in the fjords and leads of southwest Norway, encountering the Luftwaffe and flakships every step of the way. This Scottish strike wing fought in some of the bitterest and bloodiest attacks of the war, all at very low level and at close quarters. Their contribution to winning the war was crucial and while the cost in precious lives and equipment was in the same proportion as Bomber Command, they inflicted far greater damage to the enemy in relation to their losses. With Group Captain The Hon. Max Aitken, DSO DFC as station commander, Banff was eventually to become the base for a total of six Mosquito squadrons (including 235, 248 and 143), together with B Flight of the elite 333 Norwegian Squadron, and would team up on missions with the nearby Dallachy Beaufighter strike wing (404 RCAF, 455 RAAF, 489 RNZAF and 144 Squadrons). Banff was also home at one time to the famous 617 (Dambuster) Squadron after their successful attach on the Tirpitz. Two further aerodromes fall within the scope of Andrew Bird's study - Fraserburgh, with its air-sea rescue role and Peterhead which supplied Mustang fighters as escort from 315 (Deblin) Squadron and 19, 65 and 234 RAF Squadrons.

My friend has a nice fountain that is well-populated with mosquito larva. Was well populated. He dumped the water and the larva didn't change into flying mosquitoes fast enough...
My captured catch.
One of the reasons I don't go on nature walks that much anymore is this little blood sucking insect that makes a nice moment go away all to fast. Some sprays work, but then you feel toxic after spraying enough to kill the desire to land on yourself if you were a mosquito, and who knows what you're absorbing into your system after a good dose of the killer spray.

AUG 4, ... wow, where does the time go?
Hope you're day is going slower than mine is, I can't believe it's Aug 4th already.
Big Hello from Ottawa and stay clear of the Mosquito's if you can.
With HONY flourishing, and all other major city following, who knows there might be a series like these in the future.
Jokes apart, Dhaka can be crowded mosquito-wise as well.

Lake Superior shoreline of sandstone and sand. The Mosquito River is at the bend at the center. Lots of sand and rock and driftwood there too. Portal Arch (lover's leap?) at the far end, Caves of the Bloody Chiefs a bit closer, Indianhead behind.
This hike was the best I have ever taken. What a fun, fun day. (despite the fact that I may have lost my 1/2 gig camera card somewhere along the way) :(
I designed this back in August 2009, for a challenge (http://www.flickr.com/groups/750405@N23/discuss/72157619882089287/).
But I folded it just some days ago...
I wanted my mosquito having REALLY LOOONG legs, just as real ones. But it also means having the middle parts becoming too thick...
Folded by me from a 50cm square of tissue-foil, January 2010

In the dream world not all dreams develop, they do not dare to reveal themselves.
The mosquito seeks them out and drills into them so that they still develop.
These shy dreams unfold into new worlds and are beautiful creatures.
Not all Mosquitos Consume Blood. Even amongst the Bloodsucking Species it is usually only the female
