I swear this damselfly's face looks just like a monkey :)

Hey Dan!

It's a Saturday night AND I'm going out!

Crazy eh?

While I do have mixed feelings about zoos, that's not what this is about for me. This young monkey and its two siblings had just entertained us endlessly--for minutes and minutes--while running and brachiating on limbs and bars, using all five appendages so gracefully. Then, this one stopped to peer around. As I watched this monkey stare at us I had to wonder what it was thinking. After all its play, just living in the moment, this staring contrasted so much. Were there questions about us? And were there any conclusions? It seemed more than just a mindless stare.

Monkeyface Creek

California

During a trip to Bend, we decided a detour to Smith Rock State Park was in order. After a hot, grueling climb up the Misery Ridge trail, we crested and were descending the far trail just as a trio of climbers themselves were descending from the top of Monkey Face. I know hundreds, if not thousands, of climbers ascend and descend this rock every year without incident, but it is still a mildly anxious thing to watch a human dangling by the thinnest of cords at perilous heights. So naturally I stopped to make a few photos. While the other two were descending, this first climber and I actually struck up a conversation and I made a point to note his e-mail address, just so I could make sure I passed along the images I made on that hike. I finally got around to sending him those images, with the delay mostly being due to the fact that the roll just now got finished, developed and scanned. The speed of film as it turns out is slower than a hiker ascending Misery Ridge and much slower than a climber rappelling down Monkey Face.

A pair of retro-AC440CWs are still earning their keep as they haul EGSX empties north through Larkspur, CO.

There's nothing "baby-making" about this shot, but it's an angle I've been wanting to knock off my bucket list for a long time. It only really works reeeeeeally early in the morning during certain parts of summer.

Above the locomotives, you can see one part of the twin buttes on the southwest side of Larkspur, that one being Monkey Face. It's certainly hard to tell from this wide angle shot, but when viewed from about this angle, the rock formation at the top resembles the profile of a monkey's face. I think I can head back here and take more of a telephoto shot of the grade crossing about where the lead unit is here to highlight that interesting geologic feature.

BNSF 8441 lugs a southbound coal train up the grade in Greenland, CO.

Greenland sure isn't living up to its name on this particular day after a snow storm hammered the area the day prior. I-25, Hwy 105, and Hwy 83 were all ground to a halt as cars just couldn't keep it on the road. Just on Spruce Mountain Road between Palmer Lake and Larkspur, there were 8 cars in the ditch or abandoned as I was out catching the train action in pristine conditions!

Smith Rock State Park and surrounding countryside blanketed in snow, with the famous Monkey Face formation in the foreground.

….but give me some more time, my parents are already teaching me how to pinch my daily bread from unsuspecting tourists....

Check out this curious little face I captured during my latest adventure. There's something about the way this monkey looks at the world that just draws you in, right? What do you think it's pondering? 🤔

BNSF 8460 kicks off the day and leads a northbound coal empty on the north side of Larkspur, CO.

About a week ago, I uploaded a wider-angle'd shot from here where I mused about coming back to try and highlight more of the geological feature in the background there, the butte called Monkey Face (www.flickr.com/photos/chris_paulhamus/50088357852/). If you look at the top left of the butte, if you squint just a little bit, you can see how the feature looks like the profile of a monkey's face.

This ACe leader was a good start to a morning that turned out to be an ACe'splosion! I saw 3 trains this particular morning which coughed up a total of 10 ACes...not bad!

Its feeding time, but this one decides not to eat and make monkey face at us. Oran-utan rehabilitation centre at Sandakan, Sabah. Boneo.

A backside view of this impressive geological formation as it rises over Oregon's Crooked River.

Monkey Face is a 350 foot spire that is the centerpiece of Smith Rock State Park. When viewed from the south, the top of the pillar resembles the face of a Monkey complete with a mouth, nose, and eyes. The pillar is four-sided and bulges on all sides near the top making all routes to the summit quite challenging.

Monkey Face is also the location of one of the toughest free routes in the world, Just Do It (5.14c) located on the bulging east face, which is the side you're seeing here. On a sad note 4 climbers have died climbing the many cliffs at Smith Rock.

Next time I'm here I hope to catch some climbers on Monkey Face to provide better scale and show how impressive this climb is.

Doesn't look like it from this perspective but MF is 350 feet tall. A popular rock climbers objective. There is one climber in view on the cliff to the right, above the rail trail.

I'll stick to the trails....

Have a great day!

There are over 1800 cliff climbing routes at Smith Rock. Monkey Face is the most popular.
