Well this guy has been eyeing me for years. It is right where I park my car, and sometimes in the right light he looks a bit scary.

Happy Smile on Saturday

Sharing the view from the top of Smith Rock with favorite rock climber's challenge: Monkey Face. This 350 foot spire is considered a seriously dangerous climb. Monkey Face has one of the toughest free routes in the world, Just Do It (5.14c) located on the bulging east face.

Crooked river flowing north below.

One more Smith Rock shot tomorrow than I'll move on.

Hope your weekend is off to a wonderful start!

One climber on the neck, another near the grin, two on top of Smith Rock's iconic Monkey Face. It takes a special character and great skills to do this. I'll stick to taking pictures.....fun to watch though.

This 350 foot freestanding tower is home to many world class climbs and some of the hardest climbs in the US.

Thanks for taking a look!

A sunset shot of the SW section of Oregon's Smith Rock with a lava rock border fence anchoring the foreground. Iconic Monkey Face looking right on the left.

Lava rock and many other types of historic volcanic rocks, forms and features are everywhere here. Fascinating.

Have a fabulous Friday and a wonderful weekend!

One of the most popular sport climbing features at Smith Rock. Photo taken along Misery Ridge, another iconic feature at Smith, on a summer afternoon. Crooked River makes an oxbow bend around the park.

I posted this photo awhile back then thought it needed a bit more touch. Thanks so much for stopping by! Always appreciated!

Have a great weekend!

A slice of Utah near Bend.

One of the two geological marvels at Oregon's Smith Rock State Park. One of the premier cliff climbing spots in America.

Monkey Face can be seen on the left side.

Thanks for taking a look!

Crooked River flows downstream under one of America's most popular climber's challenges: Smith Rock's Monkey Face. When viewed from the south, the top of the pillar resembles the face of a Monkey complete with a mouth, nose, and eyes.

This 350 foot spire is considered a seriously dangerous climb. Monkey Face has one of the toughest free routes in the world, Just Do It (5.14c) located on the bulging east face. Those small specks on MF are some folks who successfully made it to the top.

Glad I'm just a photographer shooting from the base..but it is fascinating watching people climb the cliff's all around Smith Rock.

Enjoy a wonderful Wednesday!

Another strange, unique geo form at Oregon's Smith Rock.

Monkey Face is a 350 foot pillar that overhangs on all sides. And it looks like a giant monkey. The formation contains some of the most difficult climbs in the world. Smith Rock is world renowned for its climbing challenges.

Thanks for taking a look. Always appreciated!

We’re heading back to Central Oregon soon. With limited time it’s always hard to decide where to go out there. Not sure if we’ll make it to Smith Rock this time but I have one in the archives from last June. Can’t beat this landscape. The views must be even more impressive for the two climbers half way up Monkey Face, but I don’t think I’ll ever see it from that angle.

Looking back at the Cascades and the approaching storm from the top of Misery Ridge at Smith Rock. Surprisingly, there were no rock climbers on Monkey Face that afternoon.

On the other side of this rugged rock stands this unique pillar with a monkey head on top. 3 climbers on it here.

Monkey Face is a 350 foot spire that is the centerpiece of Smith Rock State Park. When viewed from the south, the top of the pillar resembles the face of a Monkey complete with a mouth, nose, and eyes. The pillar is four-sided and bulges on all sides near the top making all routes to the summit quite challenging.

Monkey Face is also the location of one of the toughest free routes in the world, Just Do It (5.14c) located on the bulging east face, which is the side you're seeing here. On a sad note 4 climbers have died climbing the many cliffs at Smith Rock.

One more shot of this unique geological wonder, seen from the Misery Ridge Trail while heading down the back side.

Good brakes highly recommended going down.

No climbers this day, with high winds and occasional rain.

Have a wonderful Sunday and week ahead.

If you go to Smith Rock cross the bridge and follow the Crooked River around to the backside and you will be treated with this first glimpse of Monkey Face, a 350 foot spire that's probably the most iconic feature in the park. People come from all over the world to climb it. By people, I mean not me.... The West Face variation can take 4 to 7 hours to climb.

A compressed shot of this unique geological formation and climbing target.

Has quite a loooong neck huh?

Wishing you a wonderful weekend!

We hiked the River Trail at Smith Rock State Park and went up on the Mesa Verde Trail below the 350 foot pillar of the famed Monkeyface, a favorite of climbers.

One of the favorite rock climbing challenges at Smith Rock (and there are many) is Monkey Face, shown here on the right slope of that butte behind.

When viewed from the south, the top of the pillar resembles the face of a Monkey complete with a mouth, nose, and eyes. The pillar is four-sided and bulges on all sides near the top making all routes to the summit quite challenging. The formation contains some of the most difficult climbs in the world.

It's most famous route, Just Do It 5.14c is still a test piece route for aspiring climbers."

Happy Friday!

One climber on the neck, another near the grin, two on top of Smith Rock's iconic Monkey Face. A couple watchers on the right enjoying firm ground. It takes a special character and great skills to do this. I'll stick to taking pictures.....

Enjoy a wonderful summer weekend, hopefully not too hot!

While I am certain that she is tethered I think she has way too much slack!! I saw this group shortly after they set off climbing Monkey Face and the race to the top was on! To be fair, they took the shorter route, (the West Face Variation I believe) but we arrived at the same time. When she was safe and retied off I called over and asked her if she wouldn't mind hurrying up, I needed to get to the bar. She said she'd throw me a rope so I could send a beer up to her..... :-)

The top of that pillar does indeed look like a monkey's face. Monkey Face is a 350 foot column that overhangs on all sides. The formation contains some of the most difficult climbs in the world.

Smith Rock is One of the Seven Wonders of Oregon.

A few more pics of this unique geological formation in comments.

It is entertaining, and a bit harrowing, to watch climbers scale it. I don't bounce well, not for me.......

Thanks for taking a look!

Challenging yes, but I did it in 6 minutes.....🤔😉😁.

This replica is for kids to enjoy (and challenge themselves). Or some silly adults. There were several routes on it to try. Was a pretty accurate copy of Monkey Face.

But about 340 feet shorter.

Smith Rock State Park is an amazing place to visit. One of the "Seven Wonders of Oregon."

Enjoy your Sunday!

Bali, Indonesia

I have posted the wide version of this already and woke up the next morning kicking myself because this one is better only to find out that Tom Fenske posted THIS shot from the same day) only difference is he framed Mt. Washington and I Bachelor) (Tom, feel free to put yours in comments, so amazing) I am going to be here Saturday and I knew at some point I was going to post this so I didn't want Tom to think I comp stomped him.

Framed between Monkey Face and the nearby ridge is Mount Bachelor which is a stratovolcano on top of a shield volcano. I thought that was the coolest thing ever!

MUST be viewed large..... :-)

Blow this up and give it a minute, it'll grow on you. I made it my desktop background a week ago, love it.

I don't know what the elevation here is, but the trail guide said 1,000 feet of elevation gain. I've climbed much higher and not been able to see this far, what an amazing landscape.

Smith Rock State Park is a unique place offering hiking, rock climbing, camping and great photo opportunities. Born from volcanic rock formation it stands out in this central Oregon high desert area. The major rock faces are basalt, welded tuff, a compressed volcanic ash formed 30 million years ago. The tallest peaks are around 3000 feet high.

This day was a real hot one, with only a few wispy, thin clouds and shade was in short supply. I saw this composition from the trail, ducked into the shade and cranked up the polarizing filter while enjoying the sound of the rushing water from the Crooked River.

A hot summer day at Smith Rock from 2019. Due to Covid wasn't able to get there in 2020. Just finished hiking the trails, if you look closely the specks on the trail adjacent to the point in the river those are people.

BNSF 9031 and a sister ACe are on the rear of a northbound coal empty as they push into Larkspur and under the watchful eye of the big butte they call Monkey Face.

Not a commonly photographed spot on the Joint Line, but certainly one thousands see every day as they drive north on I-25. I was hoping for this angle or one similar for some time now; all I needed was an ACe DPU. Fortune was with me on this particular morning...

This is a shot of Monkey Face at Smith Rock State Park, taken from the west side of the formation.

Latest news on this 7 Sept - just a snipped but the link gives full info. www.edp24.co.uk/news/politics/decision-on-anglia-square-r...

'The wait over the fate of the controversial £271m revamp of Norwich’s Anglia Square shopping centre goes on, after the deadline for the decision was missed by the government.'

I swear this damselfly's face looks just like a monkey :)

... and the monkey face of concentration.

A remote makes timing these shots much easier and much more obvious...

Photo was DHG's idea... a photo based on a feeling. :)
