Monk Parakeets
Wolf Lake
Chicago Illinois
The William Powers State Fish and Wildlife Area is home to a variety of wildlife species.
Perhaps the oddest species to call Wolf Lake home is the monk parakeet. The South American natives arrived at the site three years ago and have since established two nests with seven or eight birds each.
Monk parakeets is the only species in the parrot family that doesn't nest in cavities. Instead, they build elaborate stick structures in tall trees or on utility poles that can contain single nests or dozens of separate nests. The nests are apparently warm enough to allow the birds to survive Illinois' harsh winters.
Monk parakeets get their name from a cowl-like face and chest that are reminiscent of a monk's habit. The birds were brought to this country as pets in the 1960s, with many either escaping or intentionally being set free by owners who had tired of them.
The birds at Wolf Lake are believed to have migrated from Chicago's Hyde Park neighborhood, which has more than 50 nests.
Under an arch are pieces of a tomb www.flickr.com/gp/52219527@N00/2s14Fm found during the church rebuilding in 1826, thought to be that of Johannes de Brito. It was under the south wall, 6 feet by 3 feet, 2 feet below the surface of the church floor. In it were the bones of a tall man, nearly perfect, laid in a concreted cavity with a stone cover. Near the head was a small ancient pewter chalice with paten, and fragments of silver thread, commonly buried with ecclesiastics at that time.
The chalice and paten remained in the church until 2005 when it was stolen and never recovered.
Parts of a stone are inscribed with Lombardic script
JOHS. BR………..LAM: IN: HON ORE: BEA MARI SR’E: M:CC:LVI (‘This chapel is dedicated to the Virgin Mary as promised by John de Brito in 1256.’)
He was possibly from a local family as a 13c Bishop of Hereford, John le Breton, (de Brito) was born in Abbeydore, where his heart burial stone is still in situ and the monks of the Cistercian abbey were granted rights of way to their lands on Dorstone Hill). - Church of St Faith, Dorstone Herefordshire.
The morning alms run was a big tourist attraction. The monks are fascinated that westerners are so interested in them. Luang Prabang is dense with temples and over 200 monks came by in a long procession. I used a slow shutter to try to show some movement and orange colour emphasis to bring out the robes.
Feedback, comments or criticism very welcome.
This picture was clicked at Emchey Monastery in Sikkim. These little monks were so cute that they wanted to be a part of the picture and they didn't want to be there too. When I would take my camera out they would shut their eyes and when I keep it back they would pose....finally I clicked and i loved the result.
At dawn hundreds of monks and novices emerge from the monasteries of Loikaw to collect alms among the pious Buddhists of the town.

This was the line of monks starting for alms in the morning. Maybe there were a couple hundred but not really sure. I wasn't sure what they did so didn't realize they were going in a circle until it got to almost the end of this line when someone told me I could see them still on the other street so I hurried through Luang Prabang to catch them on the back side.
