I'm working on a complex woven modular model, and I thought i could give some details on the design and assembling process for the woven strips kind of modular.
Beware, there will be a lot of text, with sometimes rather complex mathematical stuff !
Some time ago, I ran out of models with dodecahedral/icosahedral symetry I could make with pentagonal strips. The two ways I was exploring didn't seem to have anything left that could be done without too much distorsion : with "filled" polygons, I couldn't find anything bigger than the ones I had already done, I needed hexagons for anything bigger ; with toroids, I always had problems with rings of fives pentagons, which were too much skewed.
These two approach eventually converged in a surprising way, each being used to solve the problems of the other : I could make a big and complex toroid, with pentagonals AND hexagonal holes : the hexagonals holes played the tole of the hexagons I would have needed for a big full polyhedron, and to avoid the distorsion of the pentagonal holes, I filled them with pentagons, which is close to what I did on this model. There is still distorsion, but the pentagons filling the holes distribut it evenly, so it doesn't warp the model. (Each hole is actually filled by two pentagons)
So I applied this idea to a truncated icosahedron, by replacing each vertex by a dodecahedron, which gives the 3D shape modelled here. (I have not filled the pentagonal holes on this representation, to help visualise the overall shape). This gives a big toroid made of 564 pentagons, with 20 hexagonal holes. I admit I was a bit intimidated by the scope of the project whan I started it... :/
Note that is mathematically inexact, for the picture I just put together with POVray a bunch of dodecahedra in the correct position and orientation, but put like this they overlap more than a bit. I hope the origami version will work thanks to the flexibility of paper.
