In the year 2379, the 3 system (8 planet) Geocentric Union of Planets was engaged in a full-scale war with the 2 system (6 planet) Allied System. The GUP commanders hired the best ship contractors to build modular ships, composed of different, exchangeable parts.
The GUP found this plan to be highly effective. Not only did it speed up ship production, it allowed quick modification of ships into almost any role necessary, within a matter of hours.

I really like the conquest board game SmallWorld. It's got elements of Risk, but plays much faster, and the mechanic of dropping races into decline allows you to kick things up a bit when your armies start to weaken. Plus, I love the mechanic for creating your race, combining a Race and a Banner token. That means every game is different, as it's rare to see the same combination pop up twice.
One of my friends that plays a lot of SmallWorld with me got me the Realms expansion for Christmas. This gives you a variety of tiles and allows you to create hundreds of worlds, and includes a campaign book with suggested layouts and goals.
It reallly adds a whole new twist to the game, but it does make set-up much slower, as you build the new world.
