1968 Mustang at the Murray Brothers Garage

I was craving pot roast but I’m the only one who likes it at my house. (Although one will eat a dish of vegetables/broth & the other will occasionally eat a bit of it all.) I seared a chuck steak (much thinner than chuck-roast) added organic vegetable broth, red wine, whole tomatoes, celery, carrots, zucchini, cabbage & potatoes. Cut the stovetop time & oven time to get a beef-stew-like dish.

HANDLEY PAGE VICTOR XL231_Yorkshire Air Museum_former RAF Elvington

The Handley Page Victor is a British jet-powered strategic bomber, developed and produced by the Handley Page Aircraft Company, which served during the Cold War. It was the third and final V-bomber to be operated by the Royal Air Force (RAF), the other two being the Avro Vulcan and the Vickers Valiant. The Victor had been developed as part of the United Kingdom's airborne nuclear deterrent. In 1968, it was retired from the nuclear mission following the discovery of fatigue cracks, which had been exacerbated by the RAF's adoption of a low-altitude flight profile to avoid interception.

A number of Victors were modified for strategic reconnaissance, using a combination of radar, cameras, and other sensors. As the nuclear deterrence mission was given to the Royal Navy's submarine-launched Polaris missiles in 1969, a large V-bomber fleet could not be justified. Consequently, many of the surviving Victors were converted into aerial refuelling tankers. During the Falklands War, Victor tankers were used in the airborne logistics operation to repeatedly refuel Vulcan bombers on their way to and from the Black Buck raids.

The Victor was the last of the V-bombers to be retired, the final aircraft being removed from service on 15 October 1993. In its refuelling role, it was replaced by the Vickers VC10 and the Lockheed Tristar.

Power for Conrail local ME-2 spends a quiet weekend in Metuchen Yard. The recently repainted Conrail caboose assigned to this job has been modified. The two smaller, non-standard Conrail "can opener" logos have been removed from each side of the car, leaving the typical larger logo intact. While I didn't mind the extra logos, the appearance now is certainly more traditional. Photos of this car in service with the additional logos can now be considered rare, I suppose.

Typical November weather greeted us in Green Bay back in mid November of 1978, just about 41 years ago. And another typical Green Bay item was running around, switching and working the local industries. We chased the Green Bay & Western 306 for a little bit and wound up catching the modified Alco pulling into Norwood yard with a modeler's dream train. Behind the red RS3m was one of those classic shorty yellow GBW hoppers, loaded of course, then two matching red box cars. Bringing up the rear was another GBW gem, a bay window caboose. The light was dismal but would improve as we headed north for Escanaba. But our subject matter in Green Bay was colorful enough to make up for any weather. My notes show that I was shooting both 64 ASA and 400 ASA at the time, Looking closely at the grain in this shot, I'd have to say that this was the worse of the two, Ektachrome 400. BTW, this is rescan from about six or seven years ago.

Vallerona (Roccalbegna, Grosseto)

Vallerona (Roccalbegna, Grosseto)

In a document from the year 817 from the abbey of San Salvatore al Monte Amiata, the "cellula Sanctae Mariae de Vallerona" subjected to the monastery together with various lands is remembered.

The "villa of Vallerona", as it's mentioned in the 17th century, has only developed in the modern era; the village has a monumental fountain from the first decade of the twentieth century, the work of the engineer Giacomo Frigeri, an architectural element of classical form, bears the coat of arms of the community in the tympanum.

In the center of the village, in Piazza XXIV Maggio, is located the parish church dedicated to St. Pio, in homage to bishop Pio Santi who, in 1789, promoted the expansion of the previous church of the Visitation of the Madonna del Carmine dating back to 1641.

Inside, among the various sacred furnishings, there is also a baptismal font and a peperino holy water stoup, both from the 17th century; note in the left altar a painting in purist style from the 19th century depicting the Madonna enthroned with the Child and Saints Pio the Pope and Anthony the Abbot.

We also note another seventeenth-century canvas of modest quality which is placed in the opposite altar, depicting the Madonna del Carmine with Saints John the Baptist and Joseph.

Vallerona is a lively village that preserves its local traditions by giving life to various tourist and village events, including the Palio delle Contrade or the very famous Focarazza; in summer there is a succession of organized events that make it a place to visit to be among the local people and spend a day together with them.

Lego Technic Set 8418 from 2005 with widened frame and room for a driver.

The tough part was to keep the bucket frame as slim as it was, there is only a tenth of a millimeter between the lift frame and the cabin. Was able to add three studs in the floor of the cabin, so there is a seat and two control levers.

EE Type 2 'Baby Deltic' D5907 at Kings Cross station, on a bright sunny day in April 1968.

The loco had entered service in 1959, and - after the class suffered from embarrassing failures - was rebuilt as seen here in 1965. The rebuilds did not last much longer, and the last of the class was withdrawn from service in 1971, and all were subsequently scrapped, after one was retained for departmental/research purposes for a few more years.

Today (2021) this scene has changed completely, with many of the buildings seen here - and the small loco depot - gone, and the track layout simplified, and electrified.

There is an active project to recreate a 'new' example, using the modified body shell and chassis from a scrapped EE Type 3 (Class 37), and an original preserved 'Deltic' power unit and generator from D5901, with bogies from an EE Type 1 (Class 20).

Restored from an under-exposed grainy blue-colour-shifted (Agfa) original..

Built at the end of 1944 at Keevil, this Vickers Armstrong Mk XIV Spitfire MV268 was stored by the RAF until early 1945. It was sent, from 33MU at RAF Lyneham, to India where details of whatever service she saw have been lost in the mists of time – and the Royal Indian Air Force records system. She was recovered to Blackbushe, in England, by Doug Arnold in the early seventies and formed part of his Warbirds of Great Britain collection. The Fighter Collection engineers took over the restoration when Spitfire MV268 changed hands and were able to complete the work in August of 1992. MV293 as she was originally registered was the first example of its mark to be flying in Europe at that time and was painted in the all silver colours of the post war RAF. In 2000, the aircraft was repainted in the colours of Johnnie Johnson, the highest scoring RAF fighter pilot to survive the war, as a surprise for his attendance at Flying Legends and as a tribute to his last war service Spitfire.

Although the Griffon-engined Spitfires were never produced in the large numbers of the Merlin-engined variants they were an important part of the Spitfire family, and in their later versions kept the Spitfire at the forefront of piston-engined fighter development.

The first Griffon-powered Spitfires suffered from poor high altitude performance due to having only a single stage supercharged engine. By 1943, Rolls-Royce engineers had developed a new Griffon engine, the 61 series, with a two-stage supercharger. In the end it was a slightly modified engine, the 65 series, which was used in the Mk XIV. The resulting aircraft provided a substantial performance increase over the Mk IX. Although initially based on the Mk VIII airframe, common improvements made in aircraft produced later included the cut-back fuselage and tear-drop canopies, and the E-Type wing with improved armament.
