Butterflies don't know how beautiful they are because they cannot see their wings. People are like that too.

After achieving modest fame as an ice skater in her native Czechoslovakia, Vera Hruba (1923-2003) was brought to America by Republic Pictures head Herbert J. Yates, who hoped to turn her into the next Sonja Henie. After featuring her in several Ice Capades movies, he added "Ralston" to her name and tried to pass her off as a leading lady.

Věra Helena Hrubá was born in Prague, Czechoslovakia (now Czech Republic) in 1923. Her father was a wealthy jeweler and her brother later became a film producer in the United States under the name of Rudy Ralston. As a figure skater, she represented Czechoslovakia in competition under her birth name Věra Hrubá. She competed at the 1936 European Figure Skating Championships and placed 15th. Later that season, she competed at the 1936 Winter Olympics, where she placed 17th. Hrubá competed at the 1937 European Figure Skating Championships and placed 7th. She emigrated to the United States in the early 1940s and became a naturalized citizen in 1946.

Vera Hruba moved to Hollywood with her mother and signed a contract in 1943 with Republic Pictures. During her career she was known as Vera Hrubá Ralston and later as Vera Ralston. She normally played an immigrant girl, because of her limited English skills. Among the 26 films Ralston starred in were Storm Over Lisbon (1944) with Erich von Stroheim, Dakota (1945) with John Wayne, I, Jane Doe (1948) with Ruth Hussey and John Carrol, and The Fighting Kentuckian (1949), also with John Wayne. In 1952 Ralston married Republic studio head Herbert Yates. Yates was nearly 40 years her senior, and had left his wife and children to be with Ralston. Yates used his position to obtain roles for Ralston, such as in A Perilous Journey (1953) with David Brian, and Fair Wind to Java (1953) with Fred MacMurray. At one point, he was sued by studio shareholders for using company assets to promote his wife. She retired from films in 1958. Reportedly only 2 of her 20 films made money. Yates died in 1966, leaving his $8 million estate to Ralston. She suffered a nervous breakdown shortly thereafter, then remarried and lived quietly in southern California. Vera Ralston died in 2003, in Santa Barbara, California, after a long battle with cancer. The authors of the book The Golden Turkey Awards nominated her for the dubious honour of "The Worst Actress of All Time," along with Candice Bergen and Mamie Van Doren. They all lost to Raquel Welch.

st rose of lima church was originally built in 1879 but has undergone many restorations. judging by the present architectural design the existing church would have been through its most recent restorations in the 1980's. some bohol churches were built more recently than this church and have been better preserved, alas the recent earthquake. the st rose church is very well maintained and offers the local parishioners a modest church for their community services.

One of the first mermaids I encountered in Coney Island, rather modest indeed by Parade standards. I love the two seahorses she's wearing like talismans and the way she's draped her fishnetting around her head and torso in a rather medieval manner. (A very personal take on the photo: this woman reminds me a bit of the late French/Swiss actress & director Christine Pascal, whom I met once and whose work I liked very much.)

Aside from this mermaid's pleasant smile, one can see an approaching couple who are smiling, too, a kind of smile-echo under the gray, menacing skies. But the rain held off until the very end!

Some folks might have preferred a tighter crop, but with all the wonderful Coney Island atmosphere happening in the background, I had to let it shine through. I do love the place! Also I feel these details add to the atmosphere and "meaning" of the photo.

My modest Sailormoon cards collection (they all fit in that little pink case in the corner, that came with my starter deck). I picked these up when I was, I think, a middle schooler (early teen), I got the Stars starter pack, and then after that I picked up the four SuperS cards from a friend in Freshman year of highschool. Other than that, I focused on pursuing the manga and filmcomics instead, because obviously, as a teen, my budget for stuff was limited.

A bit of a variation on Flirty Friday, so a bit less naughty and more polite today haha! (But can't wait for Friday!)

This very sleek and robust Black Rat Snake (perhaps 4.5 feet in length?) was wandering around the building where I work, which is near a woodland. A friend corralled it so I could get some photos. Like most Black Rats, it was very calm, and I was able to handle it gently, with no problems--I am not accustomed to handling snakes, even ones as gentle as this species, so this was a pretty big deal for me. (I usually just watch them from a modest distance!) It did musk me, and I can still smell it on my arms, despite thorough washing.

(I restrained it gently near the tail with my left hand, while using the camera in my right near the head. The snake is actually draped partly across my lap in this shot.)

So we painted this for two of the seven many years ago now but it's nice to see the guys are still in business in Brixton. Both Sleepy and Doc moved here long ago with the very modest proceeds from the Disney movie (being new to the film industry they didn't understand their legal rights and signed away all their potential royalties!) and they now live side by side running their own 'small' businesses. As you can see Sleepy runs a successful B&B whilst Doc has his own thriving medical practice. I could find little information regarding the whereabouts and well-being of the other five as there seems to have been some kind of acrimonious split following the release of the movie. Maybe time will tell…

Cheers
