History: Named in honor of the Sun King, Louis XIV, Le Soleil Royal was one of the most powerful ships of her day. As flagship of the revitalized French Navy brought into being by Minister of Marine Jean-Baptiste Colbert, she was sumptuously decorated with wooden carvings depicting a variety of motifs emblematic of the French monarch. The taffrail was embellished with a rendering of the sun god drawn across the sky by a team of horses, while the ornate figurehead showed a seahorse flanked by winged maidens....

The 204-foot-long ship was first put to to sea in 1798 and its most famous era of naval warfare was the War of 1812 against Britain, when it captured numerous merchant ships and defeated five warships, including the H.M.S. Guerriere. It was during the ferocious battle with the Guerriere that British seamen, astonished at how their cannonballs were bouncing off the Constitution’s hull, cried out, "Sir, Her sides are made from Iron!" Hence, the nickname, "Old Ironsides."
The Constitution today is national landmark and is docked in Boston.

H.M.S. Victory is the oldest naval ship still in commission. It has been restored and rests in drydocks at Portsmouth, England. The ship in Portsmouth is the sixth ship with the name Victory in the Royal Navy. There has been great interest in the fifth Victory ship, which was built 15 years earlier and whose wreckage was found recently by Odyessy Marine Exploration.

History: The name of the Cutty Sark tall ship comes from the short shirt worn by the flee-footed witch in the Robert Burns Poem, Tam o’Shanter. Designed by Hercules Linton in Dumbarton, Scotland, the Cutty Sark was launched in 1869.
The Cutty Sark was initially designed and meant for trading tea with China. Crafted to race across the globe to sack immense profits before other European traders, the Cutty Sark was built for speed. In the memorable race between the Cutty Sark and Thermopylae in 1872, the Cutty Sark lost her rudder after passing through the Sunda Straight and arrived in London a week after their competitor. What makes the Cutty Sark the hero of this race was that she continued the race with a makeshift rudder instead of putting into port for repairs, and in spite of that only lost by a week.
Inevitably, the clipper ships lost out to the more powerful steam boats, which were more reliable, and thus returned goods more consistently. The Cutty Sark won the reputation as the fastest ship in her size when she ran 360 nautical miles in 24 hours during a run for Australian Wool trade.
The Cutty Sark is the world’s sole surviving extreme slipper, with the majority of her hull fabric surviving from her original construction in the 1860s. The Cutty Sark is preserved as a museum ship in Greenwich, which is in south-east London.

Over the years I have studied 17th century rigging methods and was not satisfied with the various philosophies.
In truth, there were no clear-cut answers to this. Only basics...
To make my findings 'user-friendly' I researched what was most likely carried on the traditional ships of the period (based on class) and followed the 20-year rule relative to change and/or alterations.
As a result, the process became easier to identify and manage in my models. Not just the rigging lines but the various furniture on the deck, rails and bulwarks that supported them (the lines).

History The Harvey was built in 1847 in the state of Maryland. She was an able sailer working out of the port of Galveston Texas. At the turn out the Century she was making several voyages a year between Galveston and the ancient Jewish port of Jaffa which at the time was still under the Ottaman empire. Her main cargo was hemp used to make ropes for the rigging of ships.
This is one of the two buildings at the entrance to the Trinity Almshouses, on Mile End Road in east London, which were built for mariners in 1695, and are remarkable for the model ships erected on them. The stone plaque in the middle of the building's frontage bears the inscription, “THIS ALMES HOUSE wherein twenty-eight decay’d Masters & Commanders of Ships, or ye Widows of such are maintain’d, was built by ye CORP. of TRINITY HOUSE, ano 1695. The Ground was given by Capt. HENY MUDD of Rattcliff an Elder Brother, whose Widow did alfo Contribute.”
As Spitalfields Life explained in an article in 2011, "The architect was Sir William Ogbourne, and his design was ship-shape in its elegant organisation, fourteen dwellings on either side, each one with three rooms stacked up on top of the other, all arranged around a chapel at the centre to provide spiritual navigation. It was a rigorous structure enlivened by lyrical flourishes, elaborately carved corbels above each door, model boats and stone balls topping off the edifice, and luxuriant stone crests adorning the brick work." History In 1768 Lieutenant James Cook, Royal Navy, set sail on HMS Endeavour on a voyage of exploration and scientific investigation and through his journeys, Cook is considered to be one of the greatest explorers.
In 1770 Cook reached New Zealand where he circumnavigated and completely charted the north and south islands before continuing west. In April, he sighted the east coast of Australia and sailed north along the coast before anchoring in what he named Botany Bay. He then continued north to Cape York and on to Jakarta and Indonesia. During the four months voyage along the coast Cook charted the coastline from Victoria to Queensland and proclaimed the eastern part of the continent for Great Britain.
Cook was the first person to accurately chart a substantial part of the coastline of Australia and to fix the continent in relation to known waters. His explorations of Australia were followed up within a few years by a British expedition to settle the "new" continent. Accordingly, Cook is considered a major figure in Australias modern history. Numerous places in Australia, particularly on the east Australian coast and New Zealand, have been named after him or his vessel, and many of the names he gave to parts of the Australian east coast in 1770 are still used (e.g. Cape Tribulation, Botany Bay, the Whitsunday’s).
Cooks 1768-1771 voyages in HMS Endeavour is also considered to be of general historical importance because of its great contributions to the worlds knowledge of seamanship and navigation, as well as geography. On his voyages Cook became the first captain to calculate his longitudinal position with accuracy, using a complex mathematical formula developed in the 1760s. He was also the first to substantially reduce scurvy among his crew, a serious, sometimes fatal result of dietary deficiency on long voyages.

This profile gives a more definitive view of Doughty's cutter design. So not to confuse the viewer or builder, the model is scaled exactly at 1/4" = 1'. The receding part of the boom at the lower mast stem is precisely six feet from the deck floor. The average height of a crew member was between 5' - 5' 10" which gives the sailor safe clearance for manuevering around the boom, especially in foul weather.
From this part of the boom measurement, it was easy to configure all aspects of the deck furniture, including the principle details such as the launch, capstan, carronade, cabin, and tiller.
The rails are at the regulation height of 40" inches which clear the ropes when the carronade is fired.

The exhibition catalogue gives the following information (I've translated it from the Italian):

35 cm high.

PRECIOUS CORAL
Precious coral has been widely collected and used in jewelery and decorative craft work for thousands of years (at least since the Iron Age). It is a gorgonian octocoral and only distantly related to the stony corals that build tropical coral reefs. Precious coral occurs throughout the Mediterranean, where the species is Corallium rubrum Linnaeus 1758. Very similar coral species are known from the seas around China and Japan but from the age and context of this model ship, the species used to decorate it is probably the Mediterranean one, C. rubrum. The soft tissue of precious coral is stripped away when the coral is being prepared for craft work, leaving only the hard red core of the branches (made of calcium carbonate), which are then cut, shaped, carved and polished.
THE EXHIBITION
The exhibition was entitled I Grandi Capolavori del Corallo - I Coralli di Trapani del XVII e XVIII secolo. (Great Masterpieces of Coral - The Corals of Trapani of the 17th and 18th Centuries.). According to the guide to the exhibition, this was planned and organized by La Fondazione Puglisi Cosentino [gallery] who housed it in their building on via Vittorio Emanuele II. Trapani is on the NW tip of Sicily. The original Trapani craftmen were predominantly Jewish. However, most of the works themselves on display were religious and Christian so (I guess) were created by subsequent generations of craftsmen who were not necessarily Jewish.

LONDON - PARIS - CATANIA - ROME - LONDON ----- DAY 4
Photo from the fourth day of our crazy long distance rail trip from home (London) to Sicily. We spent the first day travelling from home in London to Paris, by Eurostar train, and were meant to the take an overnight train from Paris to Rome that same evening. But our Eurostar train out of London was badly delayed due to 'a fatality [unexplained - perhaps fortunately] on the train'. So we missed our onward connection to Rome and had an unexpected but happy second day in Paris. We left Paris that evening, on the equivalent Rome service arriving in Rome on our third day where we changed for our onward train, arriving in Catania (Sicily) that same evening. Our fourth day was our first full day in Sicily, and we spent this in the centre of Catania itself.
By the end of the whole holiday trip we had seen things and sites from ancient Greek time to modern, so the trip felt like a mini Grand Tour. Or given the rich mythology of Sicily, Etna and the Straits of Messina (Odysseus, the Cyclops, Scylla & Charybdis, etc.) perhaps our trip was like a modern mini Odyssey of our times. Odysseus took ten years to get home. It took us ten trains - but no monsters.

The ship in Portsmouth is the sixth ship with the name Victory in the Royal Navy. There has been great interest in the fifth Victory ship, which was built 15 years earlier and whose wreckage was found recently by Odyessy Marine Exploration.
One of the model farm carts housed in the manor that Charles Wade had made - one to represent a cart from every county in Britain. Sadly the man who was making the carts died before he could complete every county, but what he did achieve was nothing short of amazing.

History In 1768 Lieutenant James Cook, Royal Navy, set sail on HMS Endeavour on a voyage of exploration and scientific investigation and through his journeys, Cook is considered to be one of the greatest explorers.
In 1770 Cook reached New Zealand where he circumnavigated and completely charted the north and south islands before continuing west. In April, he sighted the east coast of Australia and sailed north along the coast before anchoring in what he named Botany Bay. He then continued north to Cape York and on to Jakarta and Indonesia. During the four months voyage along the coast Cook charted the coastline from Victoria to Queensland and proclaimed the eastern part of the continent for Great Britain.
Cook was the first person to accurately chart a substantial part of the coastline of Australia and to fix the continent in relation to known waters. His explorations of Australia were followed up within a few years by a British expedition to settle the "new" continent. Accordingly, Cook is considered a major figure in Australias modern history. Numerous places in Australia, particularly on the east Australian coast and New Zealand, have been named after him or his vessel, and many of the names he gave to parts of the Australian east coast in 1770 are still used (e.g. Cape Tribulation, Botany Bay, the Whitsunday’s).
Cooks 1768-1771 voyages in HMS Endeavour is also considered to be of general historical importance because of its great contributions to the worlds knowledge of seamanship and navigation, as well as geography. On his voyages Cook became the first captain to calculate his longitudinal position with accuracy, using a complex mathematical formula developed in the 1760s. He was also the first to substantially reduce scurvy among his crew, a serious, sometimes fatal result of dietary deficiency on long voyages.

2 radio-controlled model tugs, 'Ayton Cross' & 'Brackengarth, on the water at Murdieston Dam, Greenock. 'Ayton Cross' has working lights and 'Brackengarth' working fire-fighting monitors. I was privileged to have a wee shot of sailing 'Ayton Cross'! Both models were built by a senior and very experienced member of Greenock Model Yacht and Power Boat Club.
When living in Lewes we drank at a wonderful little pub called the White Star. The owner, Marcus Warland, was a collector of White Star Line (briefly the owners of the Titanic) memorabilia. He commissioned me to build him a model of the Titanic for the pub. The wooden model is over 40 inches long and has working internal and navigation lights. The hull is made from steamed wooden planks with copper nails and the funnels are steam-bent plywood on wooden formers.

History The Harvey was built in 1847 in the state of Maryland. She was an able sailer working out of the port of Galveston Texas. At the turn out the Century she was making several voyages a year between Galveston and the ancient Jewish port of Jaffa which at the time was still under the Ottaman empire. Her main cargo was hemp used to make ropes for the rigging of ships.

Two more films of my Titanic model showing the full sinking. Like the original the model stands on end and goes down vertically although she hits the bottom before she is fully submerged. I will now remove the lifeboats from the model and use it for a short film with a more realistic background. I could certainly do better with computer animation but the model is real and it has some of the character of the original which I think is important.
