This model of the HANSEATIC can be seen in the showroom of the Steubenhöft, a former ocean liner terminal in Cuxhaven.

The original was built in 1929/1930 in Govan on the Clyde, Scotland for the shipping company Canadian Pacific and was named EMPRESS OF JAPAN. In 1958 the ship was sold to the newly founded

Hamburg-Atlantic-Linie and started the liner service to New York under the name HANSEATIC.

In the 17th century, piracy became a serious threat to the trade conducted by the Hanseatic City of Hamburg. In 1665, the merchants of Hamburg took matters into their own hands. They gave an undertaking that every arriving and departing ship would pay a"convoy duty". It was used to build "convoy ships". These escort ships then escorted all merchant ships on the Elbe that wanted to sail to the safe port of Hamburg. The Commerz-deputation was renamed "Hamburg Chamber of Commerce" in 1867.

Back to Portmeirion in North Wales where, last August, Liang and I stayed for a couple of nights to celebrate his birthday. This lovely old metal model of a galleon stands on one of the terraces overlooking the the River Dwyryd estuary in Gwynedd.

Portmeirion Village is a completely eccentric but beautiful complex which started life in 1925 and now offers four-star accommodation and a Michelin-rated restaurant. I’ve written a more detailed description here.

Macro Mondays theme: Father

This miniature model ship was hand made by my late father in 1952, when I was 4, and has been treasured ever since. 😊

Image size is just under 3" x 2"

To the music from the Pirates of the Caribbean this galleon could be seen and heard as it sailed the troubled waters of the Boating Pond at Bushy Park the other week .Apologies for chopping the top of the mast off , but I was doing all I could to avoid the opposite bank of the water which was very distracting . From what I understand . this magnificent ship was all built from scratch and the characters and detail on deck are both amazing . The same chap is often here with a number of model boats ,---------

Now you have seen some of the boats , time to listen to a full orchestra playing a suitable theme ----------------

I had to share this image, I was making coffee in the kitchen which leads to my garden room which hence the name looks over my gardens and woodland, The sun was shining on the glass top of my unit and causing a reflection from and on my husbands hand made metal Ship. It was such a unique moment as the Sun hit the Ship and glass and mimicked reflections as if the boat was Steaming along in the sea, then of course by standing just at the right angle my lens picked up bokeh and mimicked sea spray.. have a wonderful Wednesday ~ KissThePixel2019

This early 15th century 'Caraval' carries the name 'Orion Star' and is used for the transport of goods along the Mediterranean trade routes.

In 1486 Florence and Venice had widely accepted trade agreements and benefit of each others reach within the ever expanding worldwide trade routes.

Apart from creating the shape of this ship, the sails and the color scheme, the real challenge was to recreate the symbol of florence; the iconic fleur de lis.

Personally, I think this worked out pretty well 😁

Some background story;

I chose this type of ship because it fits within the time frame and the characteristics of the venice laguna of that time (not deep and many sandbanks).

The caravel had a stern rudder and a raised forecastle and sterncastle. Caravels had a typical length-to-beam ratio of 3.5:1 with a shallow draught. It was also highly manoeuvrable and fast. All of these characteristics made the caravel ideal for exploring unfamiliar waters and coastal shallows where larger ships might easily have become stranded on sandbanks or damaged by rocks.

Let me know what you think and thx for stopping by 🙌

A stab nautical model photography, HMS Hood and a Russian boomer!, some blue fabric and bits of cotton wool

Still have to work on the lighting though...

Peter's model of it! It has taken a while, but he had to stop and work things out along the way!

I wasn't sure how to process it for best effect - what do you think?

Beautiful, but mysterious. I could find no explanation for their presence. There are several large model ships in the church, most suspended in the south aisle; although this was mounted on the south wall. Pevsner describes them as "Curiosa".

The presence of ships on the south side of the church may be due to that side being the location of the mariners' chapel in the SE corner. More on the church may be seen here...

This model show the appearance of the famous sidewheeler as she appeared in 1859. The model is made of wood and the flags of soft hand-painted metal.

Built in 1851, she was one of the largest and finest steamboats that had ever been built for the Hudson River. When finished, in design, she was considered the zenith of steamboat architecture. Her model was one of the most beautiful and faultless ever constructed. The SKIDDY was built for dayline service between New York City and Albany, New York. Speed was of dire necessity and she made the run 146 miles, with 6 landings, in 7 1/2 hours.

For more on this famous sidewheeler, visit www.rex-stewart.blogspot.com.

What made this project unque some years ago, was my direct involvement with the building of the actual ship. Because of my experience and expertise with that past endeavor, I was able to build this 1:24 scale model showing the vessel at the mouth of the Hudson River being greeted by the Lenape tribe in their canoes. This is the beginning process which will be fast-forwarded to show my method to a complicated endeavor that finally resulted in a visual piece most have appreciated.

Here, I have taken the plank-on-frame approach. Using foamboard (reinforced with wood) for the ribs. Not only had this approach worked, but it made the ship light to transport and easy to place on the seabase.

This portside profile show the completed model of PLYMOUTH as she appeared two years before she ceased service. As with the entire Fall River Line Collection, I kept the scale at 1:182. This scale allows alot of detail in a small area without straining the eyes to view it.

The model is handcrafted entirely of wood.
