History In 1768 Lieutenant James Cook, Royal Navy, set sail on HMS Endeavour on a voyage of exploration and scientific investigation and through his journeys, Cook is considered to be one of the greatest explorers.
In 1770 Cook reached New Zealand where he circumnavigated and completely charted the north and south islands before continuing west. In April, he sighted the east coast of Australia and sailed north along the coast before anchoring in what he named Botany Bay. He then continued north to Cape York and on to Jakarta and Indonesia. During the four months voyage along the coast Cook charted the coastline from Victoria to Queensland and proclaimed the eastern part of the continent for Great Britain.
Cook was the first person to accurately chart a substantial part of the coastline of Australia and to fix the continent in relation to known waters. His explorations of Australia were followed up within a few years by a British expedition to settle the "new" continent. Accordingly, Cook is considered a major figure in Australias modern history. Numerous places in Australia, particularly on the east Australian coast and New Zealand, have been named after him or his vessel, and many of the names he gave to parts of the Australian east coast in 1770 are still used (e.g. Cape Tribulation, Botany Bay, the Whitsunday’s).
Cooks 1768-1771 voyages in HMS Endeavour is also considered to be of general historical importance because of its great contributions to the worlds knowledge of seamanship and navigation, as well as geography. On his voyages Cook became the first captain to calculate his longitudinal position with accuracy, using a complex mathematical formula developed in the 1760s. He was also the first to substantially reduce scurvy among his crew, a serious, sometimes fatal result of dietary deficiency on long voyages.

Display cases full of model ships in Chicago's Museum of Science and Industry. From left to right the larger models are the Leviathan (ex-Vaterland), the Santa Rosa, and a Japanese merchant ship. This exhibit must have dated back to the 1960s or 70s; everything was a little dusty, the light was weird, but the models were spectacular. I hope they don't renovate it at some point, put the models in storage, and replace them with a bunch of dumbed-down interactive exhibits such as "how do boats float"?

History In the 17th century, the King of Sweden commissioned his country’s finest warship. During construction, he insisted that the ship be fitted with a second row of canon in both sides. The shipbuilder - Henrik Hybertsson knew that this would make its top heavy, but he dared not argue with the King. The Wasa sunk 20 minutes after her launch in 1628. She was raised on April 24 1961 after 333 years on the sea bottom and completely restored, she now rest in the Stockholm Naval Museum.

Commissioned in 1944, the Ticonderoga was the first "long-hull" Essex-class aircraft carrier. Designed just beforeWorld War II the Essex-class had a number of improvements over the previous Yorktown-class, including a longer, wider flight deck and an ability to absorb more damage. Ultimately 24 of these flattops were completed.
Ticonderoga served with the famed Task Force 58 during the later stages of World War II. In January 1945 she was hit by two kamikazes and had to return to the US for repairs. In the 1950s she underwent mojor modifications, including the addition of an angled flight deck and steam catapults to allow her to handle modern jet aircraft. In the 1964 she was operating in the Pacific and launched some of the first airstrikes on Vietnam. Her aircraft continued to play a major part in the war until 1969. In 1970 Ticonderoga was converted to an anti-submarine warfare platform. Her helocopters were used to recover astronauts from Apollo and Skylab missions. In 1974 she was decommissioned and the following year scrapped.

Steamboat models have become one of the most rare and highly sought after commodities in today's collectible market - both nationally and internationally. After investigating and researching this trend over a span of twenty years, it was evidently true. And since these models were built with precise accuracy, they became in serious demand for collectors...which is why they are still produced and respected as one-of-a-kind.
My start with steamboats began when the President of Albany International proposed to purchase a model of the MARY POWELL from the Albany Institute of History and Art in 1980. The proposal was declined -as the model was part of the Governor's home decor, on loan from the Museum.
To this end, several businessmen learned about my work from various media sources, especially when I received a grant from the Mayor to work in the Albany City Arts Office. And though fine art was produced in that facility, the steamboat models originated in the basement of the Albany Institute of History and Art where I studied as a youth -and so birthed the one-of-a-kind steamboat ...to this day.
The MARY POWELL was produced to be an exact copy of the original, and several were to follow as word about these models raced up and down the Hudson Valley that an artist was building beautiful models in Albany, NY which had to be viewed -on sight..
This model of the ALEXANDER HAMILTON represent the vessel as she appeared in 1959. A picture in this photostream show her approaching Albany beneath the Dunn Memorial Bridge of that year. She was the last steamboat to operate on the Hudson River, serving over 5 million passengers between Albany and New York City, ceasing her career in 1971 with her final run to Bear Mountain in the Lower Hudson Valley.

Large scale model of the SS Leviathan (1914-38, ex-Vaterland of the Hamburg-Amerika Line) depicting the ocean liner as she appeared in the 1920s when operated by United States Lines. She was originally built in Germany in 1914, but was seized by the US government during WWI. Notethe intricate scrollwork on the stern.
The Washington and her sister-ship the North Carolina were the first of the US "fast battleships". The 1922 Washington Treaty had halted all battleship construction for 15 years, and the Second London Naval Treaty had limited new battleships to 35,000 tons and 14" guns. Unlike Germany and Japan, the US (and Great Britain) complied with these restrictions. An "escalation clause" allowed the arament to be legally increased to 16" guns when Japan announced its intention to use guns of that caliber. However the armor of the North Carolina-class ships remained at a thickness intended to stand up against only 14" guns.
Commissioned only a few months earlier, Washington was in the Atlantic when the US entered World War II. She spent some months reinforcing the British fleet at Scapa Flow. In August 1942 she transferred to the Pacific theater and was added to the US Forces near Guadalcanal. On the night of November 14, Washington and the battleship South Dakota intercepted a Japanese task force led by the battleship Kirishima near Savo Island. When the shooting was done, South Dakota was damaged and had to return to the US for repairs, but the Kirishima was completely wrecked (and was abandoned by her crew the next day). Washington took no damage.
Because her speed allowed her to keep pace with the new Essex-class aircraft carriers, Washington spent most of the rest of the war operating as an escort, using her large battery of anti-aircraft guns to fend off Japanese attacks. Her big guns were also used to soften up beaches before invasions. After the war ended she was placed in the mothball fleet. In 1961 she was scrapped.

I just finished my wooden model of the USS Constellation!! I started working on it in 1992, then got interrupted by a career change, marriage, two kids and trying to learn golf. Now that its finally done, I've started working on a model of the HMS Victory - twice as many guns - which my son thinks is cool.

Bow view of a model of the Gunboat Philadelphia -- which was sunk on October 11, 1776, in Valcour Bay, Lake Champlain (off New York).
The American Revolutionary War broke out in April 1775 after the Battles of Lexington and Concord. In late 1775, the Americans attempted to invade Canada (partly in the hope that Canada would also rebel, partly in the hope of seizing it and denying the British access to their bases there), but this failed miserably. The British then decided to invade New York.
The British received completed schooners from England, but the Americans had to build theirs.
The American shipbuilding occurred at Skenesboro (present-day Whitehall, New York). The "Philadelphia" was one of 15 gunboats (also called "gundalows" or "gondolas") but at Skenesboro. She was laid down in early July 1776 and launched in mid-August. Her first skipper was a Captain Rice.
The British and American lake navies fought on October11. The "Philadelphia" was commanded by Benjamin Rue. An unknown British vessel hit the "Philadelphia" with a 24-pound shot and she sank. The Americans were defeated, and only slipped away in the darkness after a six hour battle. Most of the American lake navy was burned, sunk, or captured over the next two days.
In the 1930s, Colonel Lorenzo F. Hagglund (a WWI veteran and professional diver who owned a salvage engineering company) began searching for the remains of the American lake navy. In 1935, Hagglund discovered the "Philadelphia" sitting upright on the lake bottom. He raised her that year along with hundreds of other items. Because of the way Hagglund raised the vessel, much of the archeological data necessary to determine exactly what happened to the Philadelphia, how she sank, and how many men went down with her was irrevocably lost.
Hagglung exhibited the ship at various locations for several years. She was given to the Smithsonian in 1961.
On display at the Smithsonian Museum of American History in Washington, D.C.

On his voyages Cook became the first captain to calculate his longitudinal position with accuracy, using a complex mathematical formula developed in the 1760s. He was also the first to substantially reduce scurvy among his crew, a serious, sometimes fatal result of dietary deficiency on long voyages.
Huge scale model of the RMS Mauretania (31,938 tons, 790' loa), which served the Cunard Line from 1907-1935. She is depicted here in cruising configuration in the 1930s, with white hull. This model, originally from Franklin Roosevelt's personal collection, is on display in the National Museum of American History's On the Water exhibit, in Washington, DC. I need to come back with a wider lens to get the whole model in the image!
Original caption for this house:
Here wood, rough plaster, an brick strike just the right rustic note, countered by the uncompromising modernity of the overall style of furnishings and such built-in elements as the spiral staircase and the railing of the library and study above the living room. Despite the severity of the setting, the details all add up to an atmosphere of warmth and comfort. On the lower floor of the large main room, two seating groups - a sunken one in front of the fireplace, another along the window - complement and at the same time contrast with the each other, offering quite different settings for relaxed sociability at different times of day. Evenings, the fireplace offers coziness, and the built-in bookcases promote a mood of quiet withdrawal. By day the large window offers both light and a view. Since the shelves do not cover the lower part of the wall, there is a large recess at either side of the fireplace area which contains supplementary indirect lighting. The red picture is hung slightly off center, making a striking effect when seen from the door. There is even a sight gag: the head of the large polar bear skin glares up at one out of the conversation pit.
Model of Arctic Wind fishing boat in 1/72 scale, part of a diorama depicting the Douglas World Cruisers at Seward, Alaska, in April 1924. Although not the focal point of the diorama, the Arctic Wind is a highly detailed model. Note the antlers on the pilothouse. The diorama is part of the Pioneers of Flight exhibit in the National Air and Space Museum in Washington, DC.
