As a Tesla Model Y owner in mid March 2026 we had decided we would consider upgrading our 2023 Hardware 3 Chinese built car, purchased in March of 2024 ,with Enhanced Auto Pilot, to a new Hardware 4 2026 Model Y.
Hardware 3 cars were built with cameras that had some limitations if Full Self Driving - Supervised was to be installed and it was uncertain when, or if, FSDs would ever become available in Australia for installation on HW3 cars.
From 2024, all Tesla Cars were being sold in Australia with the HW4 cameras. These cameras are fully compatible with FSDs which, from all reports from friends and others, is fantastic.
With Enhanced Auto Pilot (EAP) as of February 2026 no longer receiving updates we decided we would consider our options in relation to transitioning to a new HW4 car with "Full Self Driving - Supervised".
With EAP already installed on our existing car, if we were to purchase a new Model Y we'd been led to believe that we would only need to pay Au$5000 rather than the full Au$10100 price for FSDs if we transferred the EAP to the new car before the end of March 2026.
Tesla, in February 2026, had announced that after 31st March 2026 no further upgrades would be made to EAP and furthermore any new purchases of 'FSD Supervised' would, after that date, be via a subscription only model rather than purchasing FSDs outright.
As this car would likely be the last car we would ever purchase, we were keen to purchase the car with FSDs paid outright so that we need not be concerned with the potential future price rises of the subscription model. In Australia as of April 2026 the subscription for FSDs is Au$149 per month.
When we arrived at Alexandria Tesla Showroom we received a phone call from a Tesla owning neighbour to tell us that the new Tesla YL was being released on this very day.
When we walked in to the showroom sure enough it was there on display and its the red car central in the above photo.
The YL is a 6 seater with considerably upgraded seats, including captains seats in the rear and not the standard bench seat. It also has two fold down seats in the back which when up reduce the available boot space.
We were also advised that the YL is 17 cm longer and that the suspension was somewhat better than the standard 2026 Model Y.
These were factors that could influence our decision, however, given that the standard 2026 Tesla AWD only has a battery range of 600km, it was the 681 km range and the larger battery of the YL that really was making this car attractive to us.
After discussing leasing arrangements we paid a deposit and left the showroom. By the time we arrived back home from Sydney a few days later we'd realised that the YL, despite its longer range and other attractive features, was not the car for us. It was too big and while it would have fitted in our garage it would have been a tight squeeze.
So we rang and cancelled our order, fortunately Tesla refunded our deposit. This means however that if and when we do order a standard Model Y we will be stuck with paying the subscription for FSDs and we'll have 80 kms less in range.
The purchase is not off the table, just pushed out a little.
Today 3rd March 2026 I had an opportunity to go for a long drive with my son in his new 2026 Tesla Model Y.

Let me start by saying that I’m 57.5 years old and this car made me feel like a teenager all over again.
As some of you might have guessed, I am a commercial pilot & I mentioned that because the Tesla rivals some aircraft in cockpit technology (which blows my mind) and in many ways functions very similar to many high end avionics suites.
It does after all have an “auto pilot” which is just steps away from being completely autonomous.
Simply amazing and probably the coolest thing that I’ve purchased in my entire life.

A colleague of mine at work was supposedly the 2nd or 3rd in line in Toronto last year with his $1000 pledge to buy one of Elon Musk's revolutionary electric car for the masses. Today he gave me a tour. It's somethin' else!
The first Tesla Model 3 I've seen on the road. The smaller version of the Model S is quite popular. Over the first two months of 2019 it was already the best sold electric car. Sales of the Model S plummeted as tax incentives for more expensive EV's are much lower this year.
The Tesla Model 3 was the best sold car in the Netherlands last year. With almost 30,000 sold it had a market share of over 6.5% That was partly due to the fiscal advantages for electric company cars, which were better in 2019 than they are now.
I kinda knew it was gonna burn today, but I didn't know if it would show up since the horizon lines were covered, but we were treated to a great sunset burn. The Model 3's Glass roof were a treat to reflect off the epic colors of the clouds.

Three Model 3's in Tesla's large showroom on Van Ness Avenue. It's one of the largest of its dealerships in the USA. The buidling once housed a Chevrolet dealership.
Not sure the type of tree but it is spring-blooming with those dark-red/black leaves. My subject was the Tesla, and in particular, its unique wheels. I was just going to send it to a friend who's also a Tesla fan and ask if he'd seen these wheels. The colors were too striking not to share on a bigger scale :-)

It's just a take-off on the "Pizza Pizza!" motto of Little Caesar's Pizza, signifying getting two pizzas for the price of one. I'm sure that no one gets two Teslas for the price of one, but who knows what this location has in store.
Interesting but not that unique. I don't believe the drivers of these two Tesla cars were even attending the Cars & Coffee event that was going on at the time in this parking lot, but were likely having breakfast at the restaurant a few steps away!

A total of 14 new ChargePoint charging stalls were added, with all of them being paid charging stations. The cost to charge your EV will be $2 per hour from 6am to 10pm, and $1 per hour between 10pm and 6am.
To encourage turnover and avoid EV’s sitting idle at the chargers, there will be a 4 hour time limit that will be monitored by city staff.
