If you ever see the cheapo 99 cent muslin on sale, break down and buy yourself a bolt of it so you can use it for mock ups of unfamiliar patterns. It's worth the 25-30 bucks to save you the frustration of worrying about if you have enough fabric from your donor garment.
I'm lazy in that I only make one sleeve in my mock ups and cheap since I stitch them so that I can easily rip the seams out to reuse the muslin for another mock up.
This is the Mock-up #1. There is a fair amount of post-production work in photoshop in here. I tried to make it as over the top as possible. It may need more fireball. I need to work on the muzzle flash a little (a lot).
I shot the photos on a blue chroma key background. Truthfully, I'm not sure that made a huge difference in how easy or hard it was to cut out the people. I think almost any contrasting color background would have worked just as well. I definitely didn't light even enough, that said, having the plane background made cutting them out a relative snap. The hair, as you might imagine, was the hardest, but my trick there was to let the color-select do most of the work, and then I came back in quick-mast and drew back a bunch of the hair using my tablet and a fine 2pt brush. It wasn't dead on accurate but for this application it worked.
Mockup of the buildings to the right of the house. A little fettling with the right hand roof, but it's about there. Outline of the pathway can also be seen.

Partial Mock-Up of Jitish Kallat's Public Notice 3 on the Woman's Board Grand Staircase of the Art Institute of Chicago.
Almost delete this one, but is the reverse focus of a previously posted similar image, so figured why not.

A mock up of the new front page for Open Exhibits. The redesign will be implemented in March, 2011, you see it then on Open Exhibits.
Before I started with the clear-coating, I thought I'd mock it up to get an idea. Not a real mock-up with electronics and strings, just placement of a few key parts
Bamboo bike mock-up. So far the plan for this bike will be a single ring up front with some 8 speed internal rear hub. I'll throw some canti brakes on and some 30c tires and see where I can go from there. Bamboo is a bit weird to work with as it's more like shop class in junior high. I have the wood working one week and then "plastics" the next. You can see by the shop floor that carbon and Kevlar are not the cleanest things to work with.
Checking the fit of the wheels on my first bicycle frame. Looks ok so far.
. It'll be a simple road frame for a Sturmey Archer 3 speed hub.
