While visiting with our friends in Milwaukee I caught this simple and tender everyday kind of moment between a father and his son.
(shot with a camera mounted speedlite bounced off a wall camera left, with a slow enough shutter speed to get the orange incandescent light from the hallway to the right)
Metal bowl in fridge with grapes.
Notes: Canon New F-1, Canon FD 135mm f/2.5 S.C. at f/2.5, FUJIFILM FUJICOLOR 200. Processing and scanning by Walgreens (Noritsu equipment) with adjustments in Lightroom and Photoshop. Upsampled for extra tasty goodness.
Mixed lighting; facing NE with window behind camera (western exposure, overcast afternoon) and light in refrigerator.
I left in the two vertical streaks. I dunno. It was easier that way.
Nikon D4, Nikkor 85mm f1.4G. 1 sec + flash + big fan. Demonstration of mixed lighting for students.
Lighting: 40x40cm softbox model left (look at catcheyes), 3 bare model lamps model right and behind.

Description:
I have scouted this location a few times. It's close to our local grocery store, under an automotive bridge. A creek runs through this short walking path below the shopping center. The graffiti looked like a cool background to take a few shots. I decided to make the white balance super blue and shot the subject with CT orange filters to finish the effect.
I really like finding new places to shift the white balance and mess with strobe gels. This was a really nifty project and it only took half an hour to get to, setup, and shoot. The post work was done in Aperture and I used Viveza to tweak some of the colors around, which took an additional half hour.
My only complaint was I wish I had brought a third and/or fourth stand to stand off the background light sources and perhaps split them on either side or something. The effect was cool, but it was a little too blown out on the lower rocks.

Curculio glandium (Coleptera, Curculionidae) sitting on an oak leaf.
Handheld shot at 2.4x magnification, the subject lit with one diffused flash. The background's grey given by the underexposed cloudy sky.
Another unusual composition, from within the cave adjacent to Bow Fiddle rock. Something about the rugged rockery and singular tyre seem to suit a monochrome conversion.

Im not a huge fan of flower photographs but maybe I could be. This is more an exercise for indoor lighting and aperture settings. This was midday light camera right(diffused through white curtain) and strobe through umbrella camera left. Light is so complicated! I'll get there! :)
Shooting with the Fuji well after sunset out at the beach is such a splendidly different experience.
The very last bit of light in the sky just bleeds onto the subject.

Despite both James and I being full of nasty bugs this weekend Chester Beltowski and Bruce Richardson came up to visit us this weekend, so I took the opportunity to get this portrait of Chester before they left.

I tried out the high ISO performance under EXR feature in Fuji X10 when I visited the pet store on Sunday. I still have to explore more into this EXR feature.
EXR is the proprietary technology built into the sensor from Fujifilm.
The user manual did not discuss this EXR in details. I read on the internet and I understand that it is meant to be a hardware solution for extending the dynamic range in the exposure. Fujifilm said it is optimizing the image quality in terms of resolution, ISO, noise and dynamic range.
I found that the image size is automatically reduced when using this EXR feature in camera.
The mixed lighting in the pet store is tricky and I shot through the glass of aquarium. May be this has fooled the camera metering.
I found the picture is a little over-exposed and I have done a little tonal curve adjustment to reveal more mid-tones.
The result is very satisfactory I think when we know that this is a compact camera and we are shooting at ISO 1600.
Happy Tuesday!
A factory on the banks of Exeter Canal, that I first saw a few months ago and have been meaning to have another look. First time I had the wrong lens, an old 50mm prime which was too long to fit much in. Only slightly better with a zoom with 35mm at the wider end this time, must remember to take a wider angle next time :~)
I think this place recycles paper and it pumps out steam 24 hours a day, making quite a sight at night with all the yard lights illuminating it. Tricky one to photograph though, there is a lot of junk around obstructing a clear view from most angles.
