The National Insurance Act of 1911 created an abnormally high demand for bronze and silver coins, forcing the Royal Mint to subcontract to the Birmingham Mint by then, Ralph Heaton & Sons. They produced 16, 800,000 "Heaton Pennies" in 1912, and produced more in 1918 and 1919. A small "H" is to the left of the date on the reverse. The King's Norton Metal Company also struck pennies in 1918 and 1919, with "KN" to the left of the date. The combined total for 1919 for "H" and "KN" pennies is 5,290,600. As a child, coins dating from Queen Victoria to Queen Elizabeth II were in circulation, and I avidly checked my change for curiosities. I never found one of the six legendary King Edward VIII threepenny bits that allegedly escaped into circulation - not for want of looking! All this sadly ended in 1971with decimalisation.

After all that meat, what you need is... mint tea. Look at those blocks of sugar! The mint leaves are stuffed into the teapot, and the guy who comes to pour the tea for you will add sugar to your taste. We saw some people requesting all three blocks in theirs...

These little guys are the tubers of Mint Root, or Stachys affinis; a crunchy, juicy, minty perennial vegetable. I planted one plant last year in my backyard forest garden, which is part shade, and was delighted to dig these up today to see how much they had spread! Each tuber sprouts into its own plant and creates many of its own tubers, which means this fall I'll actually be able to eat these beyond a tiny nibble. They are almost like a jerusalem artichoke in texture and are said to be great steamed, sauteed or even pickled!
The long bar at Mint Leaf Lounge, in The City of London. Unbeatable Martini cocktails (among some pretty fantastic other types too), and amazing modern Indian food.

(virtually no colour adjustment was required in post processing, but conversion to JPEG seems to have changed the colour very slightly - but more signififcantly, introduced a lot of noise that wasn't in the RAW image just before saving as JPEG).

The insects are usually in such a frenzy around the garden mint that it is a challenge to capture a good image when some stay still for a moment. This one shows a few varied insects enjoying mint-flavoured nectar!
After trying tea of fresh mint in Le pain Quotidien I always keep a bunch of mint in my fridge. In most of the case I just make tea of it as it not very easy to combine mint with other ingredients. In this case I got a little more bold and found a wonderful alternative to a chocolate mint combination in a milkshake (since I don't eat chocolate). Pear and mint it is with a glimpse of lemon in it! The recipe is here.
watermelon chunks with a mint leaf and sea salt on each one plus a dollop of chevre + creme fraiche. My mom accidentally bought lemon-flavored chevre, but it imparted a good flavor.

Everything I read about mint said that it was quite invasive, but I wasn't prepared for it to try growing roots past its planter.
