A small signal light sits along the active rail lines headed through Thurmond WV. I'm not sure what this type of signal is called.....the one in the foreground......nor what it would be for. If someone knows, I'd love to learn more about it. I just noticed that it was lit up and snagged a picture as we were readying to leave towards our next destination.

Bodie, California, north of Mono Lake, is a gold-mining ghost town that once had a population of ~10,000. The small fraction of the town that survives, is now a California State Historic Park preserved in a state of "arrested decay". Reportedly, it is essentially the way it was left when the gold boom went bust. Today, other than the occasional ghosts and several park rangers who live on site the town is deserted.

The home sits in an Appalachian coal mining town's prime location. It is just a couple of hundred yards up the road from the elementary school. That school marks the beginning of downtown. The coal mine is conveniently nearby, too.
Chloride is a onetime silver mining camp in Mohave County, Arizona, and is considered the oldest continuously inhabited mining town in the state.
Prospectors first located mineral resources in the area in the 1840s, including silver, gold, lead, zinc, and turquoise. Chloride was founded about 1863, but mining was not widespread until the 1870s after a treaty was signed with the Hualapai Indians. The railway from Kingman, called the Arizona and Utah Railway, was inaugurated on August 16, 1899 - the last silver spike was driven by Miss May Krider. The town eventually grew to a peak of around 5,000 inhabitants, and at one time Chloride was the county seat. By 1917 the population had fallen to 2,000, and by 1944 it was nearly a ghost town.

When we left Missoula, we decided to take a detour off of Hwy 90 about 20 miles down the road. The route up to this high mountain valley was 10 miles of dirt road, one lane wide. We were just praying that no one would be coming down the road and we got our wish. Turns out there was another paved road up the other side and this was quite a popular spot. It was definitely worth going out of our way to see this blast from the past.

Step into the Wild West at Nelson Ghost Town, an abandoned gold mine located just 45 minutes from Las Vegas. It's been featured in a ton of music videos, films, and video games, though it's not just a spot for pop culture fans. Join a guided tour and check out the restored houses, cool historical artifacts, and a collection of vintage cars. It is also super popular as a wedding destination as they have a little chapel.

Rhyolite, Nevada - Ghost Town
Bodie is a former gold mining town east of the Sierra Nevada mountain range and north of Mono Lake in California. It once had a population of about 10,000. Only about 5 percent of the town remains. It became a California State Historic Park in 1962 and is maintained in a state of "arrested decay." October is often a good time to visit Bodie and it is fairly easy to get to, but be aware that it's very remote, the weather can turn stormy in short order, and there are no services there.
Gold Point, Nevada is a well preserved ghost town in Esmeralda County, Nevada. The community was named after the local gold-mining industry. Gold Point is the southern terminus of Nevada State Route 774
It was a very cold, windy and spooky day to be in a ghost town.

went out to El Dorado Canyon near Nelson Nevada in the Mojave Desert in the American Southwest. That did not work out because a lightning and thunder storm blew in with a vengeance. So we ended up getting some of the best lightning photographs I have ever seen.
WESTCLIFFE, CO WHERE THIS PHOTO WAS TAKEN FROM is a charming, small mountain town in the scenic Wet Mountain Valley, known for its stunning Sangre de Cristo mountain views, abundant outdoor recreation (hiking, biking, fishing), and status as an International Dark Sky Community perfect for stargazing. It offers a quiet, ranch-style living with a strong sense of community, historical roots in mining, and a mix of traditional residents and Amish newcomers, providing rustic charm and access to wilderness while maintaining small-town conveniences.
Looking inside through a window in Bodie with the background reflected on the window. The interior of the Lottie Johl House (Main St) is seen in my shadow on the window. Actually, this is a single capture showing three images at once. It was fun photographing in Bodie - always a great experience!

This is a cityscape of Novovolynsk, a mining town in western Ukraine. The buildings in the background date back to the Soviet era. If you look closely, you will see the years "1988" and "1990" on some of the buildings.

I didn't see a real RV Park anywhere near this old building in Winkelman, Arizona, but my recent post of a motorhome in a ruined building was nearby.

On the way back from Ely Nevada we stopped in the most haunted city in Nevada, Pioche. Used my infrared camera, to see if I could catch a ghost.

Rhyolite is a ghost town in Nye County, in Nevada. It is in the Bullfrog Hills, about 120 miles northwest of Las Vegas, near the eastern edge of Death Valley. The town began in early 1905 as one of several mining camps that sprang up after a prospecting discovery in the surrounding hills. During an ensuing gold rush, thousands of gold-seekers, developers, miners and service providers flocked to the Bullfrog Mining District. Many settled in Rhyolite, which lay in a sheltered desert basin near the region's biggest producer, the Montgomery Shoshone Mine.
