Coal mining on Sponds Moor has a long history back into the eighteenth century. In the second half of the nineteenth century a series of shafts was developed by the lessee James Jackson, each of which was wound with a horse gin. This particular shaft towards the top of the moor is shown as working on the 1873 OS map, but was abandoned by 1897. In 1982 when I took this photograph the bearing stone for the gin was visible in the side of the collapsed shaft. The metal piece was for the pintle of the vertical post to pivot in. On a recent visit the stone was no longer visible and may have sliped further into the shaft.

In 1996, Marcopper Mining Corporation, 39.9 per cent owned by Canadian Placer Dome, began mining the Mount Tapian coppergold deposit on the island of Marinduque in the Philippines. By 1990 the mine was exhausted and the company opened a second site at San Antonio, three kilometres away. Following a failed attempt to obtain permission to dispose of tailings directly into the sea, the company was granted a 10-year certificate to deposit tailings into the mined-out Tapian Pit. Tunnels that had previously been used to drain the pit were sealed with concrete to contain the tailings. On 24 March 1996, after four years of tailings disposal into the Tapian Pit, the plug in the drainage tunnel leading to the Boac River gave way, resulting in one of the most catastrophic mining disasters in history.

Picher was home to mines that supplied bullets for U.S. soldiers fighting in World War I and II. On April 24, 2006, Reuters reported that Picher had been scheduled to be closed and all residents removed. Due in large part to the removal of large amounts of subsurface material during mining operations, many of the city's structures have been deemed in imminent danger of caving in.

Issued in 1954 by Cowdenbeath Town Council, local churches, and representatives of local firms and schools, setting out the obligations of all citizens in the home, in the community, at work, and in spiritual matters. It was hoped this would encourage tolerance and friendship at a time of social change when many miners were moving into the area from the West of Scotland.

I finally saw the latest Star Trek movie, and the Romulan mining vessel in the movie looked very inspired by generative art! This is my take on the ship.

Miniature Mining bee, legs loaded with pollen, on dill flowers - this tiny bee is only about 7 or 8mm long & seems particularly attracted to dill flowers. Female collects pollen and builds a clump of it in her burrow, once the clump is the right size she will lay an egg on top of the clump.
