This L-188 Electra had to make a wheels up landing at its home base in Red Deer because of a landing gear failure. It made a safe landing and all were ok. Damage was minimized by the tank taking most of the impact. It will not likely be back this fire season, but no doubt will be operational for next year. Details as follows:

On a crisp Christmas Day, I decided to head out and try this shot, hoping that the sky was clear enough. This shot has to be done in winter to get the snow-capped mountains, ideally after some rain and on a weekend or holiday to minimize smog. All the conditions were right, but in post, I still had to increase the contrast behind downtown to reduce the smog.

I processed this as a three-shot HDR with basic adjustments in camera raw. I actually had the camera on auto white balance. It leaned blue, and I kept it because I liked the winter feel.

Afterwards, I did a little processing in Nik Color Efex Pro. Generally, I like to minimize post, but even the little processing I did tends to destroy the sky, so I had to mask out the Nik Efex on the sky.

Lastly, I did some sharpening with Nik Sharpener Pro. In retrospect, I might revise the photo and pull back the sharpening. It's always good to look back and see if something can be improved.

I started practicing calligraphy since June 2021. It’s quite interesting experience, different from my writing with fountain pen. Due to the inflammation of my eyes, I have to minimize my usage of laptop or cell phone. Those traditional mediums have brought another way of self-expression.

Another of those idyllic settings while walking the trails along and around the Talkeetna Lakes area. This was a view looking to the northeast. I decided to use a social walking path to my front as a leading line to draw the eye into the image with the lake and the reflections of the forest and woods from the other distant shoreline. I felt angling my Nikon SLR camera slightly downward would bring out that perspective more and minimize the more "blah" blue skies above.

I must say that I find myself frequently taking pictures that minimize human works.

In May of this year Pan Am Railways made the first revenue move over the new Sarah Mildred Long Bridge, crossing the Piscataqua River, from Portsmouth, New Hampshire into Kittery, Maine. On that trip they delivered an empty 12 axle DODX flatcar to the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard. Last week they made the second move over the bridge to retrieve the flat car. Working roughly 25 minutes away from Portsmouth, I tried to time my drive down to minimize waiting time. The railroad made a quick trip over to grab the car, but had to wait a couple hours for a barge to go up river and a ship to go down river before the bridge was finally lowered into the rail position. Rail movements to Kittery were always rare in the modern era, but have become even more rare recently. Purportedly this will be the last trip for a couple years. I'm standing on the abutment for the rail deck of the old bridge and the pier in the foreground is the last remnant in the river of the old bridge.

With an healthy brake application from the 26LUM brake valve located in 9450's cab, a few notches were given on the throttle as L580 successfully crossed Québec Route 113 road crossing just south of the former location of Val-Piché station on remote Chapais subdivision.

With an heavy train of Zinc gons in tow and a roller-coaster track profile, a locomotive engineer working the "SM pool" have always his hands quite busy, keeping the 25MPH track speed on the dot along with minimizing slack action.

This crew workday began at 2300 the day before in Senneterre,QC, the hub of Abitibi territory operation. Deadheading by cab to Franquet, the junction point between Chapais and Matagami subdivision and one of the last reachable point on the line, in order to relieve the "1st 581 crew" who ran the job from Senneterre to Franquet. The 2nd 581 crew boarded the engine and headed thru the darkness of the 61 mile-long Matagami subdivision toward the namesake town of 1500 or so souls.

Spotting the huge Matagami Mines Zinc plant was the first thing done after arriving in town and after relieved the needs of the mine and pulling the outbound loads, diesel fuel was delivered to the local dealer along with cement and empty woodchip cars for the other railway customers in town. At the same time, they collected the released cars and built their outbound train.

It's now early in the morning and after backing up the small train toward the subdivision's half moon, the crew of two went to bed at the local railway bunk situated no more than 100 feet from the idling 645 prime mover.

The return trip began a mere 6-hours after closing their eyes. Bunk was cleaned, handbrakes released and 9450 was soon on the move bound for home.

Rolling about a mile, the train was leaved on the main and light engine rounded the east leg of Matagami wye in order to grab those loaded gons of Zinc, prepared in the wee hours of the day. After a quick brake test and a call to the RTC for an OCS clearance, L580 was quickly on the move and out of town. They must bring back the train to Senneterre before expiring on the 12th hour law.

That day, a side trip was in order to serves Langlois Mine in Grevet,QC near the end of the active part of the Chapais subdivision.

Unfortunately, a single GP40-2 can't pull all the collected cars over that hilly track profile and trafic were leave into one of Franquet back track.

And now we are, watching the diminutive train, racing back toward Senneterre yard before reaching the 12th hour of work, throttle in 4th notch dodging a "run in" from the loaded cars behind on a cloudy late afternoon day in Abitibi.

It's believe that harsh active forest fires in that area completely destroyed many parts of CN Chapais and Matagami subdivision. Damage are still unknown at this time as a part of Senneterre and Lebel-sur-Quévillon cities are stil evacuated and more than 80 fires are still active in Abitibi part of Québec.

For now, Quévillon and Matagami didn't saw active rail service since more than two weeks. CN abolished the "SM Pool" in Senneterre and trafic bout for these trackage was stacked in Senneterre yard.

Also, Matagami Mine closed their Matagami operation in June 2022 ending an operation who began in 1963. With CN's biggest customer out of town and possibly miles and miles of damaged track and structure on the line, many advanced the fact that it may be the end of the Matagami subdivision.

Because the prospects of still finding Bufotes viridis, Alytes obstetricans or Pelobates fuscus this year are looking quite grim, I'm even more delighted to finally – at the third try this year – have found Hyla arborea in the field.

More specifically I saw two subadults plus the adult shown above and heard four or five further individuals' soft summer calls from the same blackberry hedge. On the hottest day of the year the tree frogs were still sitting on the sun-exposed side of the hedge, though on shaded leaves and twigs. This individual displays the typical resting pose with fingers and toes shuffled under the body to minimize fluid depletion while sunbathing.

I'm not so sure about the digital processing on this one, maybe it's pitched a bit too warm? On the other hand, it was quite warm that day.^^

Excerpt from aecom.com/projects/hong-kong-zhuhai-macao-bridge-and-hong...:

The Hong Kong Port connects to the HZMB from a site with approximately 130 hectares of reclaimed land. The port’s Passenger Clearance Building (PCB) is iconic, with aesthetically striking architecture. Its long span curved roof mimics the surrounding sea and offers unobstructed views. Its skylights filter natural light to minimize power usage for the whole building. Tree-like columns support the roof and provide an airy feel inside.

Given the project’s proximity to the airport, our team had to overcome airport height restrictions and limited space onsite, together with the mandate to complete the PCB in 30 months whilst the whole Port was to be completed in about four years. The design and construction of the PCB roof were the most notable innovations to meet these challenges.

Its key features include:

•The integration of BIM and 3D scanning. In 2014, the use of digitalization in civil engineering was still in its infancy in Hong Kong. By overlaying the complex roof design and as erected models, any out of tolerance areas could be readily identified and rectified.

•Pre-fabrication of a total of 81 roof segments, with all necessary fittings and building services including pre-installed MEP completed offsite, form the roof that stretches to the size of nine FIFA football pitches. The largest segment measures 61 meters x 25 meters and weighs 680 tons and remains the largest and heaviest spatial structural frame for a building as of 2022.

•First ever use of installation by vertical lifting and then horizontal jacking of this scale in Hong Kong. This not only overcame the space and height limitations but also allowed parallel construction of the concrete works below to accelerate project time. On-site safety was also enhanced by the subsequent reduction in the need for working at height.

Since then, innovative construction methods, including Modular Integrated Construction (MiC) and MiMEP, inspired by Design for Manufacture and Assembly (DfMA) have become important elements in Hong Kong’s construction industry.

Sustainable features at the Port such as the District Cooling System, and the use of treated effluent from the onsite tertiary sewage treatment plant for toilet flushing helped earn the project two platinum and one gold BEAM Plus awards.

The port also contains other associated infrastructure and auxiliary facilities, such as:

•Cargo clearance facilities

•Road network

•Transit interchange

•Traffic control surveillance system

•Accommodations for frontline departments such as Immigration and Customs and Excise

Awards and Recognition:

•HKIE Grand Award 2023 – Grand Prize (Infrastructure Category)

•Hong Kong Green Building Council BEAM Plus Award 2020 – Platinum

•The Lighthouse Club Safety Leadership Awards 2016 – Gold (Architect-Consultant Category)

A big red tractor-trailer hauling 6 new bright white electric pickup trucks - Fords I think? Guess I need to take notes if I want to remember details!

I didn't see the flag until we were right next to it, hence this somewhat strange pov/composition, and processing to minimize window reflections, and selective color because sky and tree colors were pretty dull.

This is hand held at 1/25 of a second so not the sharpest focus -- but I like the idea of the two people walking the dog on a foggy night.

I'm not quite sure how to eliminate the green colour around the light. If anyone has any helpful suggestions, I would more than appreciate them...

I minimized the green colour and also the hard edge around the lights. To my eyes it is no longer distracting. Thanks again for the suggestions...

EPIC FAIL !!

Guess what's the most stupid thing I've ever done in 2016 ?

I misread the instruction about price and built this huge set over the month !!

Then in just a few hours before the deadline, I realized that !

So I minimize the set into ~500 pieces, do another photo shooting and manage to resubmit.

Seems I can still work under pressure, what a year ....!!

My entry to the Brickset 2016 Star Wars 'What's Missing?' Building Contest

Architect: SHoP Architects

Height: 1,438ft (438m)

Floors: 82

Type: Residential

Projected apartment sales: $1.5 bln

At 1428ft (435m) this is the most slender building in the world with 1:23 aspect ratio surpassing the Highcliff in Hong Kong, China. It will also be an instant New York icon with its American Art Deco architecture. The tower will have 800-ton tuned mass damper installed on top to minimize swaying.

Because of the weather patterns present that day (and much in the coming week too), I wasn't really able to capture an image that I'd wanted with either blue skies or one with clouds to compliment landscape of this national park. So I decided to angle my Nikon SLR camera slightly downward to minimize that in this view and focus more on the hillsides, valleys and draws to my front. This is a view looking to the east while hiking the Rankin Ridge Nature Trail. I later did a conversion to black & white using Silver Efex Pro 2 where I used some color filters to bring out a much richer tonal contrast for the final image.

Because of the image theft by PhotoElite (stock.adobe.com/uk/contributor/206913296/photoelite?load_...), I am removing the CC license I previous had for all my images. I believe in the CC license, but this person, claiming my images as his, has ruined that. If you are a non-profit or wish to use my images in such a capacity, please contact me privately. My original desire remains the same in sharing the images I capture that reflect the natural beauty I've experience traveling this planet.

The structure is broken down into path towards English/ various meaning shifts in English. using green for signifier and blue for definition helps to standardize. This is part of my pandemic project. The project was created to minimize the number of people that I would come into contact with and to help keep my sanity. The location is a local university. From what I can tell the vast majority of classes are being held online leaving the campus empty with the exception of a few nursing students and an occasional group of Frisbee golf players.

The project started when my wife and I used the campus to walk the dog in the evening. I began to notice the architecture and interesting light fixtures. I started to return and photograph and soon had a project.

The project is to examine the lights and architecture of the empty Campus at night.

A setting looking to the east while taking in views beyond a nearby tufa formation to a more distant one on Mono Lake. I felt using the nearby formation would help to frame and have more of a focus for the distant tufa tower. I then closed down on the aperture so that I could have more of the complete setting in focus. Focusing on the two formations would also help to minimize the haze and smoke filled skies above from nearby wildfires.

Just a small build to celebrate Captain Whiffo's first proposal in the Colonial Council - which passed, naturally, and with flying colours - especially as it had to do with minimizing taxes...

Among others who voted for the proposal (from left to right) we find here Mr. Jerome Monezterrell, Captain Whiffo (though, actually, he didn't vote himself...), Myles Bowditch, Mr. Aaron van der Meede, Captain Philip Janszen, General Samu, and Colonel Oystridge, some of the leading members of Eslandola, and all delegates in the Colonial Council.

The windows are based on Elostirion's excellent design for the Parliamentary seat in Montario with only minor changes, and the hat rack was ruthlessly stolen - erhm, borrowed! - straight from Ayrlego's design in his latest build. Thanks for viewing, C&C are welcome!

Driving the potholed road to Swift Current on a supply run (I live in the middle of nowhere), I spotted some horses at the edge of a small lake and screeched to a stop. Backed up. Rolled my window down. Cut the engine.

That last step is very important, to minimize vibration.

A white horse walked out to the end of a sand bar, or maybe it was a mud bar. Here's my favourite frame from the sequence.

A slightly early Independence Day (Fourth of July) fireworks show over Lake Monona in the heart of the Wisconsin capital.

(I must confess that I am pretty chuffed, and honored, and humbled: so far as I know this picture is my first ever EXPLORE! Wow! 😀 And THANKS for all the views and faves!! )

* Fireworks pictures in a sense are double exposures, at least multiple exposures; time lapse in a single frame.

* My ISO was set at 100. Nothing higher is needed or even desirable. The lower the ISO the longer the shutter can remain open.

* White balance set to auto because in raw capture it does not matter. Otherwise I'd suggest tungsten.

* The technique used (and it's an old one) was to hold the shutter open for 10, 20, or 30 seconds at a time.

* The aperture is adjusted in the opposite direction to keep the exposure uniform. In this case I found that 10 seconds at f/8 worked well. 30 seconds at f/16 captured more bursts, but if the action was very heavy then too many bursts made for a busy, messy picture. I had to keep changing the settings.

* The camera was in full manual mode (otherwise it would change the exposure and focus).

* Because the display was 2 miles away the camera only needed to be focused at infinity.

* Solidly mounted on a sturdy tripod and tripped with an electronic cable release to insure there is no camera movement.

* Vibration reduction turned off (otherwise the VR would "hunt" for nonexistent movement and smear the shot). I nearly forgot this but I made a couple of test exposures early on and realized immediately that they were smeared due to the VR.

* I also turned off the Long Exposure Noise Reduction when I realized that it was doubling the time for the picture to load, and I knew I could minimize any noise in Lightroom. As it turned out little noise reduction was necessary beyond the standard.

* I worked in live view and kept the auto review on for two seconds for each shot to insure that I was getting what I thought I was getting. It’s enormously reassuring!

* With the shutter open for longer periods, more individual bursts are recorded on each frame. You have to shoot a lot of frames and hope to luck out. There is no way to plan it. You open the shutter, the stuff goes up, at the end of the time the shutter closes and you've got what you've got. I think I made about 75 exposures to get 19 that were good. The rest were trashed.

* Despite some 75 extended exposures, live view, and constant instant reviews, the battery at the end of 45 minutes of fireworks still had 60% charge. Turning off the noise reduction undoubtedly helped, plus made the shoot more efficient; no waiting. 😀

On opening day of the TriMet Orange Line and Tilikum Crossing bridge I took advantage of the free tram rides to explore the unique views (see first comment below) of the Tilikum Crossing bridge it offers. Because the best views are near the bottom of the run and the tram swings strongly after crossing the tram tower, it's best to take photos on the downward journey of the tram. The windows of the tram cabin are highly curved so stand close to minimize reflections which are caused by light colored areas and clothing of people inside the tram. Do NOT use a polarizer, the windows are NOT glass and you can get very strong color distortions. The tram is a fair distance from the bridge so use a telephoto zoom that covers the 70-200mm range. Use The Photographer's Ephemeris to plan sun and shadows for your photography, in this series of photos the sun was almost exactly 90º relative to the long axis of the bridge providing a nice side light and shadows across the deck of the bridge. The tram journey is only a few minutes long, and views of the bridge are near the bottom just before you get to the tram tower, so be ready to take bursts of shots on each tram ride. Tram rides are free on the downward journey, and $4.50 on the upward journey; or buy a TriMet day pass for $5 and use the streetcar, light rail or bus (from the CLSB), and #8 bus line to return to the upper tram terminal. Be sure to check the tram schedule/info page before you go. More locations and tips for photographing the bridge. NB39155
