What strikes me about the story of these gardens are two things. Firstly, what can be achieved when purpose and determination are applied and secondly how age can really never stop you doing what you want to achieve.if the mindset is there.
Billy Knights, a retired farmer, started these gardens at the age of 70 and continued to work on them with love and care until his death at the age of 93.
Both he and his wife loved the gardens; a design once created on a piece of wallpaper, after his son had jokingly said he should make a water garden from a piece of wet ground, for which seemed to have no purpose after it became too wet for grazing land.
Mr and Mrs Knights shared these gardens with the general public and raised money for good causes with the money generated by public admission fees.
Upon Mr Knight's death, the garden fell into neglect but then Coral, his daughter, restored the site in 2002 and added a nature trail, tearooms, disabled toilets and plant sales. There is now a kingfisher hide, arbour and bamboo grove.
It has created a lasting impression on me and where I could go back to again and again. I am hoping for a season ticket as perhaps a Christmas gift. It is open most times of the year.
The place is one of beauty and peace. What a lasting legacy. I hope to spend more time here drawing and taking pictures and just enjoying this wonderful place.
Well worth a visit.
