Between semesters, on Thursday, January 9, 2014, Washington University faculty and staff from across disciplines gathered on the Danforth Campus to share insights on teaching and learning at the biennial i teach symposium co-sponsored by The Teaching Center, WU Libraries, and Arts & Sciences.
Held every other year in January, the all-day event featured interactive presentations by WUSTL instructors, as well as plenty of time for informal discussions among colleagues. Along with a plenary address titled "Fostering a 'Growth Mindset' on Teaching," the program included 16 sessions on metacognition, active learning, mobile devices, digital projects, self-questioning, visualization, and more.
Capt. Kindra Mortimer, a U.S. Army Reserve officer with the 290th Military Police Brigade, of Nashville, Tennessee, participates in the Active Shooter Threat Response Training taught at an Army Reserve installation in Nashville, Tennessee, on Sept. 27-29. This training is the first program in the Army Reserve to use the latest tactics taught by federal agents to defend against active shooter incidents, which will eventually train all military police armed guards across the 200th Military Police Command. How Your Mindset Can Actually Make You Physically Stronger
Don’t believe that simply changing the way you think can have a big impact on your life or your accomplishments?
It’s a somewhat abstract concept to think that just being more positive or more driven can attract more good things to you, or that focussing more on the good in your life can make you happier.
So how about a demonstrate to show just how powerful the mind is? What if the brain could make you considerably stronger, simply if you change the way you think?
Introducing Hysterical Strength
Hysterical strength is a term used to describe historical examples of people tapping into incredible physical power. The most common story is that of mothers who have to rescue their children from being trapped under cars or some other heavy object. In these scenarios, the mothers call upon some kind of superhuman strength and manage to physically move the cars out the way. How can this be possible?
While this has never been proven, there actually is a good scientific explanation for how it might work and some evidence to support it.
That’s because we normally are only capable of accessing around 30%-50% of our muscle fiber. When exercising or going about our normal routines, we can’t use 100% of our strength because we would risk injuring our ligaments or exhausting ourselves. You can see this when someone gets an electrical shock – this causes the muscles to contract to their fullest which is enough to throw the individual right across the room!
But under times of incredible stress or in life-and-death scenarios, it might just be that the brain is able to tap into those hidden depths. This would work because of the release of stress hormones like cortisol, adrenaline and perhaps other neurotransmitters such as acetylcholine. Together, these could improve communication across the neuromuscular junction, thereby recruiting a greater number of muscle fibers and allowing the individual to access their ‘full’ strength.
Putting it Into Action
In theory then, you could gain more strength simply by imagining your family trapped under a car. If you could really believe it, then you might be able to access hidden strength enough to break your records in the gym.
But there are easier ways according to the research. That’s because yelling at the top of your voice just so happens to trigger a small stress response and studies demonstrate that this is enough to allow you to gain a little more strength during lifts! The environmentalist movement wraps itself in images of trees, flowers and cute woodland creatures - but the results of their desired policies are often far more sinister in reality. Dr. Robert Zubrin joins Stefan Molyneux to discuss the environmentalism movement's anti-humanist claims, including its modern tirades against pesticides, global warming, population growth, biotech foods, resource depletion, nuclear power and industrial development.
Dr. Robert Zubrin is the founder and President of the Mars Society, a senior fellow with the Center for Security Policy, and the author of “Merchants of Despair: Radical Environmentalists, Criminal Pseudo-Scientists, and the Fatal Cult of Antihumanism.” Get the book: www.fdrurl.com/robert-zubrin

Members of MindSET (Mathematics INstruction using Decision Science and Engineering Tools), a program created by the engineering honor society Tau Beta Pi, visited Davis Aerospace High School in Detroit on May 3 to introduce high school students to STEM-related projects. Engineering students Amani Alkayyali, biomedical engineering; Pawel Popiel, chemical engineering; Christina Wong, biomedical engineering; Aliya Jawad, biomedical engineering; and Dan Putt, chemical engineering; led high school students in building penny launchers and constructing load-bearing towers out of index cards and paper clips.
MindSET aims to give back to the community by communicating basic engineering concepts to secondary school students via activity modules, keeping in mind that perhaps more important than the transmission of information is the kindling of students' curiosity. I was discussing with my girlfriend the other day about how I don't exactly have the natural eye for composition. On the other hand, I have this fascination with the technical aspects of exposure, lenses, lighting, post processing etc. For me it's usually about why or how something happens photographically rather than just being in the moment. Along with that mindset comes a lot of self-criticism and doubt.
There are those times though where I just seem to let myself go and get lost inside the world within my viewfinder. It's that feeling that keeps me going.
