In this session, Carol Dweck will describe how students' growth and fixed mindsets shape their motivation and achievement. She will discuss 1) new large-scale studies showing the power of growth-mindset interventions to increase success in school, 2) new research on how parents' praise can create fixed mindsets and undermine motivation, and 3) new research on how fixed-mindset academic environments can decrease the representation of women and minorities.

WEDNESDAY, February 19, 2014 - Lahore—Hajvery University (HU) hosted a lecture on The Role of Youth for a Progressive Pakistan by Lord Nazir Ahmed member of the British House of Lords.
Lord Nazir Ahmed presided the Dean Honour Roll Ceremony and awarded Certificate of Excellence to 40 students of M.PHIL and PhD. Lord Nazir Ahmed announced 8 Internships for Hajvery University students at the British House of Lords.
He delivered a motivational address to the students on the positive mindset required by today's youth to overcome the numerous challenges that Pakistan faces. He encouraged students to devote themselves to their education and work hard. He further added that the Students must become agents of change in their individual capacities if they wanted to see Pakistan as a prosperous nation in the future.

Fokus Ubah Mindset Petani, Salurkan Produk Ekspor
Menjadi penyuluh pertanian bukan pekerjaan yang mudah. Sebab, ia harus bersentuhan langsung dengan para petani, yang tingkat pemahaman terhadap teknologi pertanian. Namun, Sumarno, salah seorang penyuluh pertanian di lereng Sindoro ini berhasil menjadi penyuluh berprestasi.
Sumarno takubahnya seperti pegawai penyuluh pertanian pada umumnya. Ia aktif berkantor di Balai Penyuluhan Kecamatan Ngadirejo dan memberdayakan masyarkat sebagai tugas pokoknya. Semuda semangatnya, Sumarno mampu menjadi sosok penggerak penyuluhan dan menyabet sejumlah prestasi.
Tugas berat sebagai penyuluh pertanian baginya bukan merupakan beban, ia lebih menganggapnya sebagai tantangan untuk agar para petani membuka cara pandangnya dan menerima sistem teknologi pertanian. “Agak susah untuk mengubah cara pandang bertani masyarakat. Temanggung merupakan wilayah pertanian dan sebenarnya potensi ini dapat dikembangkan, hanya saja untuk mencapai itu butuh waktu panjang,” terangnya.
Waktu panjang baginya adalah waktu untuk mengubah cara pandang masyarakat agar memanfaatkan teknologi pertanian yang dapat menunjang peningkatan hasil pertanian. Ia meyakini, bahwa pertanian adalah sumber ekonomi yang akan tetap dibutuhkan dan memiliki hasil yang tinggi pula.
Tantangan tersebut ia lakukan dengan aktif mendampingi para petani secara langsung, baik melalui kelompok tani maupun gabungan kelompok tani. Penyuluhan ia berikan dalam hal pemilihan bibit, antisipasi penyakit, peningkatan produksi dan hingga sampai tahap distribusi hasil pertanian.
“Misalnya begini, tanaman cabai yang paling banyak di Ngadirejo itu rawan terkena patek, tugas saya adalah memberikan informasi dan penyuluhan tentang cara menangani patek dengan alternatif teknologi. Saya menggunakan bubur klorin dari kapur padalarang, belerang dan unsur PK. Tetapi tidak semuanya bisa menerima dan pelan-pelan saya menyadarkan hingga semuanya menggunakan,” terangnya.
Selain pendampingan itu, untuk meningkatkan pendapatan para petani, ia menggagas berdirinya Kelompok Usaha Bersama (KUB) dengan para petani. Memanfaatkan bantuan PUAP dari pemerintah sebagai modal, upaya ini berhasil cukup sukses. “Kendala klasik yang dialami petani ada tiga hal, pertama lahan, kedua modal dan terakhir pemasaran. Tiga problem ini kami tangani secara serius,” terangnya.
Kendala permodalan berhasil diatasi dengan PUAP dan sistem KUB yang dikelola di Desa Mangunsari, Kecamatan Ngadirejo. KUB ini memberikan peluang besar bagi terciptanya akses permodalan dan pengembangan pertanian. “Sistemnya kami kerja kolektif. Kami juga menerapkan berbagai sistem baru untuk menunjang kinerja,” terangnya.
Dalam hal pemasaran, ia memiliki strategi khusus. Warga Lingkungan Sendang, RT 01 RW 02, Kelurahan Walitelon Selatan, Kecamatan Temanggung ini, bekerjasama dengan salah satu perusahaan eksportir hasil pertanian untuk pemasaran hasil. “Berkat kerjasama tersebut, hasil pertanian kami diekspor ke Singapura,” terangnya.
Ia mengatakan, varietas yang diimpor adalah hasil pertanian yang unggulan dari hasil teknologi pertanian yang ia kembangkan. Komoditasnya antaralain buncis dan cabai. Ia juga pernah mencoba mengekspor kubis, namun karena harga jual kubis di pasaran di eksportir lebih tinggi di pasaran, maka ekspor kubis terpaksa tidak dilanjutkan.
“Harapan kami adalah, apa yang sudah kami gagas dengan kelompok tani ini ditiru oleh semua petani yang belum tergabung. Sehingga seluruhnya bisa meningkat tingkat kesejahteraannya,” tandasnya.
Kepala Bappeluh Kabupaten Temanggung, Agus Prasojo, mengatakan, Sumarno sebagai salah satu binaannya di institusi penyuluhan ini merupakan sosok yang patut diteladani. Selain berprestasi dalam bidang pekerjaannya, ia juga memiliki reputasi baik dalam kenaikan pangkat, “Untuk poin kenaikan pangkat dan angka kredit ia mencapai 100 persen. Setiap 2-2,5 tahun dia naik pangkat,” terangnya.
Selain itu, Sumarno juga telah menyabet juara Penyuluh Pertanian Teladan 2012 pada tahun lalu dan pada rentang wkatu yang sama mendapat anugerah Tim Penyuluh Lapangan Berpretasi Program FEATI 2012. “Terakhir sebagai juara dua penyuluh pertanian teladan tingkat provinsi,” tandas Agus. (zah)
He who dares wins. The brave may not live forever but the cautious do not live at all. Coming from an Army back ground and starting a business, I found it hard to transition. I didn't know anything about business or how to conduct a business but I took what I learnt and utilised in every way possible. I've learnt a lot from being in the Army. I've learnt to become resilient, push my limits to breaking point, learnt about my threshold how much I can endure before giving up. The thing is I need gave up. I've learnt to adopt in every environment and learnt to take the positive outcome from every situation. I believe in taking risks I also belive in protecting the downside. This means working out in advance all the things that could go wrong and making sure you have all those eventualities covered. I have come close to failure many times and most true entrepreneurs skirt close to it. There are always things in life that you might regret, and there are probably a lot of business decisions I do regret - but I try not to dwell on them.
