As I photographed this bench from various angles I spotted a dog walker and was able to capture the two together. The dog clearly knows the route and leads the way leading me to believe that this is a routine that doesn't change much. That perhaps the bench is never used by this person. How do routines prevent us from getting the most out of life. Is the man really there with his dog or is he thinking about something else? The practice of mindfulness is about totally being in the moment. Isn't that why we do photography?
It was a pleasant mindful state when i was watching this Heron so long so still. Kudos to this Creatures, So Patient.
Though it can be challenging and misunderstood by others it’s ok to choose to honor your reality in healthy ways. Often in our culture the focus is placed on things like the beauty, the finding good in harm, the pushing through at all costs, the glamour, the neat and tidy, the so-called “resilience” that trauma produces, the positive, the “blessings” of pain, suffering and mistreatment, or the happy ending. It’s ok and even healthy for you to recognize the aspects that can go unnoticed—things like rest, grace for yourself, truth, the deep, extremely difficult yet rewarding internal work, repairing and retraining your brain and thought processes one tiny, thoughtful step at a time, just breathing when even that seems like too much to handle, choosing to fight for life when you’d rather just quit trying to survive, or working to open yourself up to trustworthy people. It’s important to remember, recognize and even celebrate all the “behind the scenes” work that gives life that produces the beautiful, blooming growth over time.

~The Summer Day~
Who made the world?
Who made the swan, and the black bear?
Who made the grasshopper?
This grasshopper, I mean-
the one who has flung herself out of the grass,
the one who is eating sugar out of my hand,
who is moving her jaws back and forth instead of up and down-
who is gazing around with her enormous and complicated eyes.
Now she lifts her pale forearms and thoroughly washes her face.
Now she snaps her wings open, and floats away.
I don't know exactly what a prayer is.
I do know how to pay attention, how to fall down
into the grass, how to kneel down in the grass,
how to be idle and blessed, how to stroll through the fields,
which is what I have been doing all day.
Tell me, what else should I have done?
Doesn't everything die at last, and too soon?
Tell me, what is it you plan to do
with your one wild and precious life?

Watching and photographing bees pollinating flowers is a practice in mindfulness...the bee is doing nothing other than the task at hand, and while photographing these fast moving, stinging creatures I have to let go of everything else and only be present for what is in front of me and my lens, and what is immediately around me.

A little meditative ~2" x 4" watercolor with drawing. The pattern is from Amy Maricle's book, Draw Yourself Calm. I love the wabi sabi touch of the hole--right up my alley!

I love listening to the sounds here! This trails winds along a river & it sounds like a bubbling brook is close to joining it.

Candid street photography from Glasgow, Scotland. I hope that you are all having a great weekend!
Lately I have been trying my hand at drawing/sketching. I usually bring my journal, a pencil, and a few pens along on backpacking trips and make an attempt to record a scene from or around camp.
Photography is a great way to observe the landscape in a meaningful way. See where the light and shadows fall and what makes for a pleasing composition in the final frame. Drawing a scene (at least for me) takes about 100 times more study, and leads to a final result that is about 1000 times less realistic. Regardless, it helps to burn an image into my brain, both of the scene and my crude drawing.
This image was made looking over Divide Lake toward Mt Yoran. I hadn't thought about it till now, but I think this will make for a good drawing. Lots of different areas of light/shadow, there is perspective to consider in terms of the closer and more distant trees, plus there are no clouds to worry about......I suck at drawing clouds.
