The Stockbridge Mill in Scituate, MA

Crown Roller Mill in the St. Anthony Falls Historic District, Minneapolis, MN (1880). Christian Brothers & Co. was founded in the 1870s by John & Llewellyn Christian and former Minnesota Iron Works operator C. M. Hardenberg. Unlike the Washburn and Pillsbury mills, Christian Brothers wanted their flour mill to be an architectural landmark on the river. The mill was purchased by the Northwestern Consolidated Milling Company in 1891. A fire ravaged the interior in 1983.

A reconstructed early 19th-centuary flour mill which was moved from the North York Moors to the grounds of York Castle.

Originally the mill served Newton-upon-Rawcliffe and surrounding villages until the water that flowed in to the mill pond dried up in 1915, making the mill redundant.

The mill was restored to full working order on this site in 2012.

Actually, I sold my monster lens, 14-24mm f.2,8G, back to B&H and got the relatively new 20mm f/1.8G which is what I would have preferred if it were available early last year.

Over 400 years old - it was here that the miller's son Arthur Moore, in April 1912, a keen early radio "ham", picked up a distress signal from RMS"Titanic" - no one believed him for some days until it had been confirmed such was the infancy of radio!

The mill was built at the same time as Penllwyn Manor House and owned by the then Lord Tredegar.

When I was a lad it was owned by Mr. Albert Moore and his brother Leonard whose family had owned the mill for over one hundred years.

Prior to that the mill was owned by Aneurin Jones, better known as Aneurin Fardd, a Welsh poet who had helped the local poet Islwyn ( 1832 - 1878) to improve his writings.(Islwyn was a frequent visitor to the mill at that time) - it is said that it was near here that Islwyn heard a nightingale that inspired his "Ode to a Nightingale"

Later, Jones went to America where he built a breakwater in New Jersey and became superintendent of New York's Central Park.

The old cottages opposite the mill are now used for candle-making.

Historic Clifton Mills is located in Washington Township Michigan. The mill operated from the mid 1800s to the 1960s. It is still privately owned.

Sixes Mill was originally build around 1820 by gold prospectors and later rebuilt between 1878 and 1880. It is located near Kennesaw, GA on Sixes Rd exit 11 off I-575.

This mill is on private property and photos have to be taken from the side of the road. Sadly, tall fence posts have been installed and depending on what type fence is mounted, the photographer's view could be effected.

Pluto and Proserpina are milled by Sculpture Factory, an ongoing research on classical sculpting via robotic means. Inspired by Michelangelo’s technique of “non-finito” (the “unfinished”), the installation explores the tensions between form and matter, the real and the artificial, the old and the new.

Developed in the early twentieth century, these two buildings - the Millennium Mills and the far smaller Rank Hovis Premier Mills - are all that remains of a previously colossal mill complex that surrounds the pontoon dock. This site would have been astoundingly busy at its peak in the sixties, but sadly the decline in this industry led all the mills (and in fact, almost all industry in the area) to be wound down during the 1970's and 1980's. The Millennium Mills themselves would be some of the last buildings to close, only finally surrendering in 1985 when the Royal Victoria Dock closed to traffic, finally sealing the end for this industrial giant.

This is Mill Springs Mill, which is a historical gristmill from the 1800s that is preserved and administered by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Nashville District. The mill, shown here Oct. 27, 2010, is located off Kentucky Highway 90 between Burnside and Monticello on the banks of scenic Lake Cumberland in Mill Springs, Ky. (USACE photo by Lee Roberts)

There are four Belgrave Mills in this complex at Hathershaw. The tower seen here belongs to the No.2 Mill which was built in 1907 to the design of F.W.Dixon. Cotton spinning ceased at this mill in 1969. Seen to the right is the No.4 Mill by the same architect. This was built in 1914 and was electrically powered from the beginning. Again it saw production cease in 1969.

This grist mill was built in 1839 by George Mclean. It was once renowned for producing an award winning oatmeal. It is now known for its fine dining restaurant which has been there since 1966. You can see the mill pond and remains of a mill race while walking the landscaped grounds in the back.

Clifton Mill is one of the largest water powered grist mills still in existence.

The first mill at this site was built in 1802 by Owen Davis, a Revolutionary War soldier and frontiersman miller. The mill was built in this location to take advantage of the natural power of the concentrated water funneled into the gorge. Owen Davis and his son-in-law, General Benjamin Whiteman also built a saw mill and a distillery. Soon a village known as Davis Mills sprang up around the mills. The Little Miami River powered five other mills that were built within a mile of Clifton Mill; a woolen mill, saw mill, paper mill, barrel mill and another grist mill. Clifton Mill is the only one still standing.

Around 1810, Davis sold his grist mill to Robert Patterson, father of the founders of NCR (National Cash Register Company). Patterson renamed the village Cliff Town, had it surveyed into lots and officially made a town whose name was shortened to Clifton.

Clifton grew rapidly and at one point had a population three times that of today with blacksmith shops, a butcher shop, two churches, a school, a hotel, two grocers, weavers, shoemakers, paper makers and more. Due to Robert Patterson being made Quartermaster, Clifton played a part in the War of 1812. Clifton Mill provided corn meal for federal troops from this part of Ohio, while Patterson's woolen mill provided cloth and buttons for uniforms.

Robert Patterson sold Clifton Mill to the Armstrong family who ran the mill for more than 20 years. Then three generations of the Preston family ran the mill until 1948. Many years and several owners later, the Satariano family purchased the mill.

How the Mill Works

History of Clifton Mill

The present building was built by the Armstrong Family in 1869. The Armstrong Family owned and operated the mill until 1889.

Clifton Mill has six levels: it is built with two floors below the rim of the gorge, and four floors above the rim. The lower level contains the water turbine. The upper levels house all of the milling equipment and storage of the ground corn and wheat. Many pieces of antique milling equipment are on display. A tour of the mill is available for a nominal charge. The tour is self-guided but there are plaques that describe the machinery.

The exterior of the mill is in good condition. It is sided with red planks and the building is trimmed with white paint. The mill is well lighted with many 4 X 4 double-hung windows.

Mill No. 5 is an old textile mill built in 1873. It stood empty for years. The founder and owner, Jim Lichoulas took the old textile mill and restored it. Beautiful architectural details still remain with the 4th and 6th floor being repurposed into shops and eateries along with a movie theater and yoga studio.

The Mill in Farningham has fallen into a state of dilapidation and is due to be refurbished as apartments. A mill has stood on this site since Doomsday times.
