We're coming near the end of migration season and the waves of honking geese inspired my latest addition to the naturalist's miscellany. You can check it out here wp.me/p10non-6c
Photo and textures by me, one by terry.
tracks of animals' footprints in a huge sweep of curve, shows rather they were unable to cross the wet salt flats, and returned back.

Blurb: The centerpiece is an African/ African-American woman with eyes closed and large hoop earrings. Yellow background, landscape view of the Capitol. "Part of the The Georgia Avenue Global Mural, this piece is one of the five murals created along one of Washington, DC's main corridors, Georgia Avenue, as part of a grant-funded project that explored the city's cultural and social issues. This particular mural is titled The Great African Migration, and portrays the immigration of people of the African Diaspora emerging into Washington's communities. Being a first generation American of Ethiopian descent, this painting reflects Helina's own personal narrative. The mural project was coordinated by artist Joel Bergner with funding through a grant from the DC commission on the Arts and Humanities." More at www.metaartist.com/murals.html

The Merced National Wildlife Refuge in California's Central (San Joaquin) Valley encompasses 10,258 acres of wetlands, native grasslands, vernal pools, and riparian areas. It was established in 1951 under the Lea Act to attract wintering waterfowl away from adjacent farmland where foraging ducks and geese were causing extensive damage to crops.
The refuge hosts the largest wintering population of Ross' geese along the Pacific Flyway. Each fall approximately 60,000 arctic nesting geese terminate their annual migrations from Alaska and Canada to make the refuge home. Here they mingle with thousands of other visiting waterfowl and shorebirds to make the refuge a true winter phenomenon.
