In April 1967, the Upper Lakes Group, Inc., launched the unique traditional styled bulk carrier Canadian Century. In 2002 the Canadian Century underwent a major refit: a new larger cargo hold, midsection, and a new self-unloading system were installed to the existing bow and stern; upon completion, it was renamed the John D. Leitch. In February 2011, the Leitch was acquired by Algoma Central Corporation.
