I can see it, but getting there is another matter.

The feather ceremony brought Henrietta back from the window — no longer transfixed, no longer moaning for a vanished town. For the first time in years she could eat supper with her husband, walk the streets, and even laugh at a neighbor’s small joke. But her malady never left entirely. At night, just before sleep, Henrietta’s body would grow restless. She would rise from bed, wander to the window, and sit in silence with Shadow her cat. And in that hush, she would tilt her head, listening for something only she could hear.

“I can still see it,” she would whisper. “The other Somewhereville. Just behind the veil. It wants me to come home.”

One of the hazards from playing video games at an advanced age is pixel overload, which can lead directly to crossed and wandering eyes--even in dogs.

A mud-slick path, once a driveway, dissolves back into the earth in front of an old long abandoned house that is sagging under the weight of the years.

The town gathers in the clearing by Everstill Antique Shop, where the very first raven feather was said to have landed. Dr. Septimus Fiddleman directs the ritual based on his medieval manuscript, insisting every feather must be present. The recipients stand apart, cloaked in silence, unable to meet each other’s gaze, each holding their feather as if it were both treasure and toxin. The feathers are laid in an iron brazier. At the stroke of midnight, Fiddleman recites the incantation from the manuscript. The townspeople chant in unison, a sound that seems to stitch the air together. When the flames consume the feathers, they do not burn as wood does — instead they erupt into black smoke that takes the shape of raven wings beating against the night sky. The loud screech of raven suddenly pierces the air. The smoke disperses, and with it, the simplification halts. The fading buildings solidify again. The streets regain their form. The windows return to frames of glass and wood rather than hanging panes of light. Somewhereville is saved.

Delpha McCrae, waitress at the Somewhereville Diner calls herself "the caffeine mule," topping off mugs before they hit the halfway mark. Some of the old-timers drink 10 cups before breakfast. After 15 years on the job her hair smells like grease, onions, bacon, and despair. Shampoo doesn't touch it. Neither does prayer. She hears everything and is discrete: she knows about five affairs, three bankruptcies, and one underground ferret-fighting ring. She doesn't ask. Be sure to sit in her section the next time you're in the diner--and don't forget to leave her a hefty tip.

Bu Yong told me to find the tiger and the tiger's wife was seen at the "Wok and Awe" restaurant with her bodyguard. It was time to drop in on Tommy Wu, notorious leader of the Tiger Triads. Tommy Wu’s restaurant, The Crimson Dragon, sat on the corner of Lantern Street like a velvet trap — warm glow outside, sharp teeth within. It wasn’t listed in the guidebooks, didn’t advertise, and never had to. People found it — or more often, were invited. You didn’t stumble into The Crimson Dragon unless someone wanted you there. This was Tommy's empire, a place where deals were struck and enemies unmade.

We had a little plumbing issue over the weekend so I did an exhaustive search on the internet for a good plumber. Luckily, I found Logjam Plumbing who said they'd send a couple of their finest master flushers over. It turns out the two guys they sent over were preparing for a Karaoke competition. They did manage to fix my issue but only after a couple of rousing renditions of the Plumbers Lament. At least we didn't get exposed to the proverbial plumbers crack.

Lester Fandunklestein takes his job as Somewhereville Harbor Rust Inspector quite seriously. His boss says he was born with a nose for rust. Lester uses his superior sense of smell to sniff beams and bolts to judge the character of corrosion. In all his years on the job, he's only been wrong once--when he sniffed rust on a bulkhead and claimed it belonged to the necklace of a stripper from one of the dockside dive bars. It turned out to be from a vending machine in the bar's men's room that dispensed condoms. Humiliated, Lester didn't speak for three days.

The shootout at the Jade Scorpion didn't last long. The ship gurgled its last breath as Dolan's men swarmed the decks. Lt. Frank Dolan stood amid the chaos, trench coat flapping in the salty wind like some war-weary scarecrow. He lit a cigarette and gave me the nod.

“We got it, Malloy.”

And so it ended. The recipe was retrieved code intact. But General Kwan Lo? He was gone. Slipped out during the firefight, probably dressed like a stevedore or a priest. Word on the street is he boarded a freighter bound for Macau.

And me? I was left with an empty feeling as I walked through the streets of Chinatown. It was the kind of feeling that comes from having to tell a beautiful woman her dreams had vanished--the feds had confiscated the recipe and "The Wok and Awe" restaurant would have to move forward without its signature dish.

Tune in tomorrow for the final poignant scenes of this Chinatown drama, where Eddie Malloy bares his soul.

Somewhereville PI, Eddie" the Razor" Doyle leaving the wharf after solving the case of "the left handed chop sticks." He found the chop sticks in a tired rusty Shanghai freighter filled with cargo containers large enough to hide a thousand sins. Now it was time for a visit to his second office, a wharf side bar where the bartender knew Eddie's order better than his name. Bourbon was his faithful confidant, his silent partner on those cases that took him down darker roads than he’d ever cared to walk.

The wharf creaked beneath me like an old man with secrets in his bones. Midnight had come and gone, but I wasn’t ready to follow it. The fog rolled in off the bay, thick and low, swallowing the lights and softening the sharp edges of the world — the kind of night that forgets your name if you stand still too long.

I lit a cigarette, though I didn’t really want one. Just something to hold between my fingers. Something to do besides think.

Rosie Feng. The recipe. The mess I’d chased through alleys, back rooms, and bullet holes. All of it had slipped through my hands like steam off a soup bowl — hot, fragrant, and gone before you ever really grasp it.

I thought about what could’ve been. A quiet dinner in the back of the Wok and Awe. Her laugh echoing off the bamboo walls. A bottle of warm sake between us and no one shooting at anything. I’d have paid good money for that scene. Hell, I might’ve even believed in something again.

But this city doesn’t deal in happy endings. Just late nights and long shadows. The best you get is surviving — and if you're lucky, surviving with style.

I stared out at the dark water, cigarette burning low. Somewhere out there, the Jade Scorpion was a rusting shell, its secrets gone cold. Somewhere out there, General Lo was starting over with a new name and an old soul. Somewhere out there, Rosie was sleeping — or trying to — wrapped in memories that smelled like sesame oil and regret.

And me?

I was just a gumshoe in a wrinkled coat, talking to ghosts and waiting for the next knock at the door.

Somewhere, the fly was probably still buzzing around my office.

And the world turned.

Just without the won ton.

Because in the end, all a man like me ever really gets… is the silence that follows what could have been.

Professor Aldous Greel, chair of Unnatural Histories at the Somewhereville Institute of Anomalous Inquiry has been studying the effects of the raven feather for two decades. Greel’s theory is that the raven’s feather acts as a “truth lodestone” — not simply revealing truth in the moment, but magnetizing the recipient’s entire perception for the rest of their life. He has documented patterns of wandering, sleeplessness, and “pull phenomena” (the inexplicable draw to places like Everstill Antique Shop). Many Somewhereville residents whisper that Greel has his own feather hidden away — a claim he has never confirmed, nor denied. However, as we shall see, it was Greel's scholarly paper about the effects of the raven feather that caused a great calamity in Somewhereville, especially amongst the feather recipients.

Melvin Pell sold his story "Midnight Under Glass: The True Night of the Raven" to Garrick Vance, a slick, image-obsessed executive for Obsidian Lantern Studios. Vance has a reputation for buying up strange, local legends and repackaging them into prestige “docu-fantasy” series that blur truth and fiction just enough to sell to the "C" grade film crowd. Behind the scenes, Vance has a talent for digging up real, dangerous details from his sources — not to uncover them, but to weaponize them for marketing. Above is an image from the trailer for the film which includes just enough enigma to suck in the late night insomniac crowd. And this where the trouble started.

Well, I ride on a mailtrain, baby

Can't buy a thrill

Well, I've been up all night, baby

Leanin' on the windowsill

Well, if I die

On top of the hill

And if I don't make it

You know my baby will

During their last public quarrel, Ubaldo was overheard yelling “I spent two hours curling this mustache for you!” To which Contessa screamed, “You call that a curl? It’s a limp piece of overcooked linguine!” Sheesh, that's pretty harsh.
