The queen petted Kenzie for some moments then rubbed the ruby on the collar around Kenzie's neck. Amazingly, the room begin to glow around Kenzie. The queen said, "my brother the Ruby Sorcerer is the only one who can get you home. I've cast a spell that will take effect in a few minutes. You will sleep and then you will awaken in the Valley of the Ruby Moon. Follow the valley until you reach my brother's fortress. Show him the ruby collar. He will help you find your way home." And that's the last thing I remember about the Ruby Queen.

Not physically — but in presence, in complexity. Some claim that if you look at him too long, you can feel your own life begin to shrink, simplifying into something dangerously small.

Once the Night of the Raven was stripped of its secrecy and commodified for spectacle, the town itself began to unravel, as if the veil Henrietta Brood saw had torn wider. It began subtly: first signs without lettering — empty shopfront names glowing faintly but unreadable. Then entire buildings seemed to thin, their walls vanishing while their windows remained lit, suspended in the air like lonely lanterns. Locals called it the "Simplification." Some thought it was punishment for the exposure of the raven’s truth. Others whispered that Somewhereville was finally reverting to its essential form — an echo, a memory, a sketch of itself.

Every year, the morning after the Night of the Raven, a ship appears in Somewhereville Bay. The ship is made of a dark, oily wood that seems to soak in light. No sails. No crew. No anchor. It glides silently across the bay. No one ever sees it arrive. No one sees it leave. It simply passes—from east to west, always in the same direction. For two nights after its passing the town clocktower chimes thirteen times at midnight.
The Raven disappears...
The Ship leaves...
But no one knows where they go or what unseen mysteries they leave behind. The only known fact is that these events only occur under a crescent moon.

Unfortunately as we searched the caves and caverns branching off from the Cavern of Molten Gold all we found was a boiling river of gold. There was no going forward. We decided to retrace our steps and continue searching for a portal to the Lost Sierras.

We left the Sand Whisperer's compound hunkered low in the back of the undertakers carriage. It was a grisly conveyance that rattled and groaned as it plunged over the rocky pothole infested road. We passed many unsavory looking characters along the way, but they gave the carriage a wide berth. We were just happy that the undertaker was not transporting some previously alive being along with us.

With his roguish grin and devil-may-care attitude, the merry barroom fiddler knows how to turn dreary nights into a raucous celebration. His repertoire spans from toe-tapping jigs to soulful ballads. As he saws away at this fiddle the barroom comes alive and even the most raucous drinkers forget about brawling for a while.

Somewhereville resident Basil Feng is known for his popular restaurant "Wok and Awe" that feature's Basil's proprietary dish "The Velvet Hammer"--soft tofu and sesame-crusted chicken, folded so delicately you won’t notice the spice bomb until it’s too late--served with a knowing look and a glass of milk.

In the architecture of my mind, the windows don’t look out so much as in—each pane of glass reflects forgotten versions of myself, while the hallways stretch impossibly long, bending at odd angles where the floor rises like a tide. I become lost in time, unable to find an exit. In the end, it comes down to listening instead of escaping.

I followed Wei Feng through the shadowy streets of Chinatown, sure that he must be carrying the recipe. Wei Feng didn’t look back once. That’s how I knew he had the recipe — men with nothing to hide twitch at every corner. Men with everything to lose walk like they own the sidewalk.
He cut through alleys slick with grease and graffiti, past shuttered markets and noodle stalls where stray cats watched like informants. I stayed two storefronts behind, ducking behind steam vents and stacks of bamboo crates.
Then I saw it — the river’s oily shimmer up ahead. The docks.

I kind of liked the Creekside Inn. It's very rustic and looks peaceful. But Kenzie reminded me that it looked a lot like Grimwood Burrough which we passed through on our way to Ruby Falls. I had to agree with her. No more monster canyons for us.

The morning after the feather burning ceremony dawned bright and quiet in Somewhereville. Joggers were out in force and paperboys delivered their papers as normal. As the day progressed the relieved citizens appeared on the streets, talking in groups and renewing their friendships. When night came the streets erupted in one large party with people dancing, shouting and carrying on until the wee hours. Joy accompanied with relief had returned to Somewhereville. But maybe not for all.

Midnight Miles also called the Cool Blue Eazy is the hippiest cat in Somewhereville. He's so cool that even his cool is frigid. It's been said that the ice cubes in his signature Scotch and soda never melt while the glass is in his hand.
