Early winter in Somewhereville when the air is brisk and the streets are slushy with cold wet snow. Watch your step out there.

Welcome to Uncle Sonny's Juke Joint in Somewhereville, where the drinks are smooth, and the groove is even smoother. Sonny's cocktails are so groovy, you can catch a tune from your martini glass, and the bathroom graffiti is as poetic as the lyrics to the songs. Jaybar says, "check it out."

The Low Light Lounge in Somewhereville sits empty, like a hollowed-out shell whispering memories from last night’s music. The smoke still hangs in the air, a thin, gray haze clinging to the wooden tables and scuffed floorboards, lingering like it doesn't want to leave. The tables are bare, save for a few abandoned glasses with lipstick stains and the glitter of forgotten coins scattered like loose promises, waiting for another night to break the hearts of those who live for the night.

The dwarves haven't seen Snow White since she rode off into the sunset with the handsome prince. Grumpy's been feeling the pecuniary pinch and refused to show up for this Halloween photoshoot without a contract. Personally, I think they all are happier without him.

A sun-scorched saga of an eccentric curmudgeon in a three-piece linen suit, with a parasol in one hand and a list of grievances in the other that he isn't shy about sharing with his stoic chauffeur Reginald Spuddleworth as he drives him across the torrid desert. Reginald is forced to suffer all manner of capricious indignities including being required to drive in reverse for hours on end because Mr. Daisy was partial to the view and didn't like the wind in his face. The Somewhereville Reader's Gazette gives it 4 stars. Check it out.

It was starting to rain. Rosie Feng stood across from me in the alley behind her husband’s restaurant.
She was wearing black — not for mourning, but for armor. The same heels, the same silk dress that whispered when she moved. But something in her had gone quiet. The fire was still there, just hidden deeper now.
I handed her the envelope. She didn’t open it.
“Is it in there?” she asked.
I shook my head, slowly.
“No. Just the report. The real thing’s gone. Feds took it. Boxed it up and buried it somewhere in Virginia under five layers of bureaucracy and a padlock made of red tape.”
She looked away, jaw clenched.
“So that’s it? My father’s legacy, my husband’s pride… boiled down to a line in some government file?”
“Yeah. they called it a national security risk. Said it was never just about pork and scallions.”
Rosie smiled, but it was the kind of smile you give a ghost when it sits down next to you.
“You know what the secret was?” she said, eyes locked on mine. “He didn’t write it down because he didn’t want to own it. He said a good recipe lives in the hands. In the breath. You taste it, you remember it, and if you’re lucky, you pass it on.”
“Guess the feds can’t eat memory.”
She turned to go, heels echoing down the alley like punctuation on the end of a forgotten sentence. Then she paused, halfway to the streetlamp’s halo.
“You were good to me, Eddie.”
“I’ve been good to worse people.”
“You ever want to taste something that’ll never be cooked again,” she said, “you know where not to find me.”
Then she was gone.
I stayed there for a while, letting the rain wash Chinatown’s ghosts back into the cracks.

Marvin Pell is Somewhereville’s most persistent — and least trusted — newspaperman, working for The Somewhereville Ledger & Lantern, a paper that prides itself on the slogan “Illuminating What Others Won’t”. For years, he’s been sniffing around the Night of the Raven, convinced that the feather recipients are part of a secretive order. However it was Professor Aldous Greel's explosive paper that lit a fire under Pell. Pell claims he’s just telling the public “what they deserve to know,” but locals think he’s stirred up something dangerous, maybe even irreversible. Rumor has it that Marvin has sold his story to a local corporate film producer that wants to sensationalize it on the big screen.

With the public outing of the raven's feather, Isolde experienced similar issues to Irwin Dapple although they were more tactile. Instead of being able to read the touches that had taken place on objects she started creating cracks in whatever she touched. She stopped shaking hands. She stopped using dishes. She avoided door handles. People noticed she wore gloves in the middle of summer, which only made rumors grow — some said her touch was poisonous, others that she could break bones without trying. It was common to see Isolde staring through the cracks in walls that she had inadvertently touched.

This emulation of a 1960's head shop made me happy. I'm a child of the 60's and for me this represents much of what the 60's were all about--vibrant colors, good vibes, and music. You can't hear the music but I'm sure the stereo inside this shop would be playing some Jefferson Airplane, Jimi Hendrix, Buffalo Springfield, and Doors tunes. I can almost smell the incense and patchouli oil. Peace out.
Happy Slider's Sunday everyone.

The deeper we traveresed into the citadel the more incredible the sights became. We were now thoroughly lost in a maze of caverns and grottos that had once been inhabited by an ancient people. We could do nothing but keep moving forward. Unfortunately Mystic Cascade Grotto proved to be a dead end.

Meet Somewhereville's resident mafia Don, Guido De Luca. He has a nose for fine wines and trouble. He can sniff out a rat from a mile away, so watch out. He's the guy to go to for used cars, small business loans, passports, and other identity documents. He's also great for solving any sticky problems you may have with snarky people. He offers his services on a "cash only" basis. Be sure to share a glass of Chianti with him--and never rat him out.

To be streetwise is to master the look--hat pulled just right, eyes half lidded, a cigarette smoldering at the corner of your lips to make them unreadable. Most of all keep your back to the wall in diners, bars, and shady offices. You should be fine.

The sun was setting large and bright over the distant valley below Grimwood Burrough as we left the Qwimble Brothers abode in search of Qwim Qwizzle. The distant view gave us the impression that things were quite rosy and our journey might be easier from here. But what did we know?

A small girl gazes sadly at a lone blue sock remembering when they were her favorite pair. Sadly, now there is only one--the beginning of understanding that things change, that loss can be quiet, and that even socks can make you feel something deep.

The queen petted Kenzie for some moments then rubbed the ruby on the collar around Kenzie's neck. Amazingly, the room begin to glow around Kenzie. The queen said, "my brother the Ruby Sorcerer is the only one who can get you home. I've cast a spell that will take effect in a few minutes. You will sleep and then you will awaken in the Valley of the Ruby Moon. Follow the valley until you reach my brother's fortress. Show him the ruby collar. He will help you find your way home." And that's the last thing I remember about the Ruby Queen.

When Silas received the raven’s feather in 1987, his truth was brutally elegant:
“Everything is already smaller than you think. You’ve just built illusions around it to make it feel large.”
In an instant, his mind began compressing reality — stripping events, people, and even emotions down to their most basic components. His compulsion now is to reduce, reduce, reduce — to see what is left when all unnecessary parts are stripped away. Over the decades, he himself has seemed to shrink. Not physically — but in presence, in complexity. Some claim that if you look at him too long, you can feel your own life begin to shrink, simplifying into something dangerously small.

Every year, the morning after the Night of the Raven, a ship appears in Somewhereville Bay. The ship is made of a dark, oily wood that seems to soak in light. No sails. No crew. No anchor. It glides silently across the bay. No one ever sees it arrive. No one sees it leave. It simply passes—from east to west, always in the same direction. For two nights after its passing the town clocktower chimes thirteen times at midnight.
The Raven disappears...
The Ship leaves...
But no one knows where they go or what unseen mysteries they leave behind. The only known fact is that these events only occur under a crescent moon.

Unfortunately as we searched the caves and caverns branching off from the Cavern of Molten Gold all we found was a boiling river of gold. There was no going forward. We decided to retrace our steps and continue searching for a portal to the Lost Sierras.

We left the Sand Whisperer's compound hunkered low in the back of the undertakers carriage. It was a grisly conveyance that rattled and groaned as it plunged over the rocky pothole infested road. We passed many unsavory looking characters along the way, but they gave the carriage a wide berth. We were just happy that the undertaker was not transporting some previously alive being along with us.

When Mr. Carl Crumple comes to town—usually in a dented-blue sedan with a loud muffler and a leaky crankcase—things happen--dogs walk backwards, it rains inside the laundromat, and owls show up on the power lines at noon. He never stays in Somewhereville for over 48 hours and the town exhales a sigh of relief when he's gone. People in Somewhereville have a conservative streak and don't appreciate the abnormal.
