The Mad Catz Rock Band 3 controller midi box is clipped on at the bottom. It provides the connection between the guitar and the Xbox and also provides the game controller buttons for the Xbox. Microsoft doesn't allow the guitar's own game buttons to function as game buttons. They do, however, have midi functions if the guitar is connected to a PC via the midi connection.

first check of how much you can stuff in a peppermint-box; pcb from an old sidewinder dual strike joystick (with 2 potentiometers), buttons from an old synth, led's from various devices, and wiring... this might work.

I tried to write something today, unsuccessful.

after checking if everything fits in, there's some soldering to do. Check again if the connections are working. And finally, getting the box closed.

Left to right, program (MIDI patch / program change) up / down, volume, pitchbend, additional CC and keyboard octave range selector.

The feel and placement on the original controllers is excellent. Very friendly for people used to fretting on guitar.

Sadly there isn't much room for additional switches. Although I suppose two can be added, one to the top area and one to the bottom.

This is an M-Audio Trigger Finger midi controller. I use it to create drum and other percussion parts.

Housed in a slimmer, all-new design, this model features RGB backlit trigger pads lifted straight from the MPC Renaissance and a 20-character LCD screen with comprehensive parameter feedback. Designed to erase the line between hardware control and software performance, the new MPK 249 also includes the ability to send QWERTY-style commands using soft-controls, a low-power mode for iOS connectivity via the Camera Connection Kit and enhanced response from the refined keybed.

The approach I took is possibly the simplest way to deal with it all. Using shift registers in and out along with a PIC18Fxxx (clocked at 10mhtz the CPU clock rate divides nicely for MIDI use of the PIC's USARTs at 31250 baud).

Basically you strobe / latch the registers, then shift them into the PIC and take a look at whats on the lines. For the keyboard I also use a 74xx138 for dealing with the matrix.

I had to modify I think one or two lines on the keyboard pcb (trying to remember its been a few years). To use this kind of setup.

I decided to keep the power supply on this PCB, afterall theres plenty of room left over, especially after I route a new PCB with surfacemount components.

I'm probably going to add an external NVRAM or FLASH chip since the PIC18F internal memory is pretty small unless you start using the program space.

The clunky (way overrated wattage) 1% resistors are 100k pullups.

Completed project. The grey wire is a usb wire that plugs into your computer and pedal appears as a MIDI device. The pedal still works as a volume pedal too! The usb powers the teensy controller inside, so you need no other power. Also, since you program it over midi, you don't need to take it apart to change the program!

Livid block and block NE midi controllers

This is a foot-operated midi controller that i can use to change programs of my midi keyboard, the Pod or the Trigger Finger. It gives you additional music expression and flexibtility.

Here's the MIDI controller for my Live performances. My father was building it with my modest help since the September 2006, and it took a lot of sweat and tears, believe me. Yesterday was the birthday of this nice board and I'm more than happy to welcome it to my mobile lab. Dad, you are great!

There's a microprocessor inside and I already implemented a simple MIDI IN / OUT for it, so that it works with Ableton LIVE and other sequencers nicely. The next step is to implement a Mackie protocol to mimic a standard Mackie hardware and be a welcomed control board everywhere without a mundane pre-configuration.

8 tracks, each with individual volume faders, eq, and 2 sends. 2 return tracks with volume faders. 2 faders mapped to the chainselectors of fx-racks on the return tracks. 2x8 macro's for the fx-racks on the return tracks, 2 button-grids of 4x4 buttons with shift-function which control; select track's device (the little blue hand),track on/off, track record on/off, play clip, stop clip, track que. And finally, some buttons to scroll up and down scenes, trigger scenes. global functions. Talk about functionality....

The left is the power board, the right the main processor board.

CPU (Hitachi HD6301V1P)

EPROM - (HN482764 - 8k x 8)

ADC - (M58990P)

and a bunch of 74HC138s for scanning + a few latches.

The power board uses oddly enough B744A power transistors and JRC4558 / 2903 OPAMPs for regulation, and also houses the MIDI signal output buffer transistor, a C2785.

I think originally it used like 4 C or D batterys, however I've just been using a 9V regulated via a 7805 (easy breezy).
