I bought a cheap USB powered Microscope and then started exploring. Some of the images were very unexpected so I thought I would post a few.

Attempt to use water-based green food coloring to stain onion skins under the microscope. It didn't work very well as the green hides most of the of the cell structure.

I am so far behind, I've been taking the photos but haven't posted or looked in over a month. I apologise for missing all your photos and will try to catch up as I try to catch up with posting.

 

I'm posting this a few days late as I continue to catch up. #3 got a USB microscope for Christmas and we had a good play with it today. So it seems like a good idea to use one of the results as my photo of the day. Quite impressive 1000x magnification, though this is less than that I think.

I bought a cheap USB powered Microscope and then started exploring. Some of the images were very unexpected so I thought I would post a few.

 

2015

Here is a series of images that start with a histology specimen that is then mashed up with a floral photograph. The microscopic view is a specimen of a human wound that is reacting to the injury and starting to heal. Small multilobe cells are “poly’s” (polymorphonuclear leukocytes, neutrophils) which are the body’s basic defenders against injury and bacteria. Small dark mononuclear cells are lymphocytes, immune defender cells. The large dark nucleus cell is a monocyte-macrophage, the trigger or coordinator cell which turns on the actual repair or healing process. The elongated spindle cells are migratory angiocytes, vascular cells which are arriving and reassembling into flowing blood vessels (a tubular capillary with red blood cells is seen in cross section in the right upper corner). The colors of the specimen come from the standard histology stain H&E, hematoxylin and eosin.

 

The flower picture shows the goldenchain tree, Laburnum x watereri ‘Vossii’ (a hybrid between primary species L. alpinum and L. anagyroides). The laburnums are members of the pea family Fabaceae. The original species are native to southern Europe, but the beautiful hybrid (Voss’s laburnum or the waterer laburnum) with its hanging chains of yellow flowers, has become popular worldwide. This picture scanned from old film is not technically or esthetically sound, but when the colors are inverted (the colors as they appeared on the original color negative), they bear a resemblance to H&E stained microscope slides. This prompted a mashup between the flower negative and the wound histology.

 

Six views are presented: the original histology (1a), a derived painterly version (1b), the original flower positive print (2a), the original flower negative (2b), a mashup of the flowers and microscope using the original pink-orange-purple palette (3a), and another mashup using logical transforms to alter the palette (3b).

Nice Quality Monocular Biological Compound Microscope!

Another pilgrimage to the Grant Museum....always inspiring and amazing

This is the microscope I used. Two of the objective lenses are missing in this photo. It has x4, x10, x20, x40 objectives and a separate 'photohead' tube. I bought two of these for an interactive display I am doing for the natural history museum in Brussels (Royal Belgian Institute of Natural Sciences). I liked them so much, I bought another for myself. The photos were taken using my Panasonic camcorder. Not ideal, I know, but this is the only equipment I have that fits my microscope camera-adaptor. For two of the photos I fitted the microscope with a dark-field condenser to achieve the black background.

Students from Y9 worked on a 'Inside Me' project. They explored imagary from scientific slides through a microscope. Students were then asked to record these using a digital camera. Outcomes were used to generate work further into abstracted images, paintings and drawings.

Provisionally I am calling this as Chrysis impressa.

 

These are some test shots with the new Hi-Chrome Camera and GMZ microscope. I think the new kit will prove immensely useful for identifying these extremely challenging wasps. The series of shots here cover some of the key characters one has to look at. Normally one needs to match five or more out of seven characters to approach confidence in one's determination.

 

Being able to compare images will make this challenging task a little easier (hopefully).

The exhibit on the history of the microscope was full of gorgeous, intricate instruments that were as much ornament as tool.
