The microscope was a big hit at the health workshop. I still feel somewhat guilty that the people of the community thought they were actually looking at microbes swabbed from their hands, rather than critters taken from the local cow pond.

I really like microscopes. I get really protective of the one I use at school, and I've been known to grumble when I find the first years have left oil on the objective lenses again.

 

When I get a good microscope, I try to hang on to it at all costs. You never know how good you have it until you look at a scope that only focuses on a single point in the field, or has a light that is never quite bright enough.

First pics taken with the new microscope!

Thought I'd try my hand at some microscopic photography!

I bought a $75 microscope yesterday to look at our local algae with.

This is digital scope with a usb cable that works well with my mac. I

did buy a piece of $15 software called miXscope to take pictures,

make movies, make measurements, add subtitles, and draw on the

screen. The scope does not take very good 60x and 200x photos out of

the box due to a low power LED backlight. After fifteen minutes of

getting frustrated I took the toy apart and added a 1 watt white LED

and now I've been getting some great results.

The only thing that does not work in this microscope, is the optics... Although LEGO has produced a magnifying glass brick, I never even took an attempt at getting something between a 20- and 600-fold magnification from them...

 

This is a run-of-the-mill inverted microscope; an instrument you will find on any laboratory where tissue cultures are handled. It is inverted because with a normal microscope one looks down on the specimen. An inverted microscope allows the user to look from below the sample. With the thick dishes, flasks and plates used for tissue culture, and with a volume of nutrients on top of it, a lense can come a lot closer to the specimen from below! Getting closer, means higher magnifications are possible.

I sketched this inverted microscope at the lab late last night..

Some time ago I bought this cheap noname Microscope objective at a flea market I think I paid 20 SEK (about 3 USD) for it.

 

It's a finite 10X Microscope objective with a intended tube lenght of 160mm and na 0,25.
