I think this microscope was used as an analysis tool in a medical regiment of Soviet Army in 1930-1940's.
This thing lets me feel myself one little step closer to Antoni van Leeuwenhoek times - no switchable high NA apochromatic lenses, no ergonomic eyepieces, no motorized focusing and scanning stages, no LED lighting, no Abbe's theory for diffraction and image formation. Only a single tiny lens and a candle as lightsource.

I bought a cheap USB powered Microscope and then started exploring. Some of the images were very unexpected so I thought I would post a few.
This is a Smiths Chip known in Australia as "Tubes"

(Linz, November 24, 2010) Ars Electronica Center Linz is hosting its second LabDays event. The center of the action will be the laboratories—labs, for short—in the Main Gallery, where participants will be able to spend two amazing days experimenting, tinkering and playing under the watchful eyes of experts invited especially for the occasion. “Microcosmic” aptly describes everything attendees will encounter on these LabDays, which target all age groups, advanced users and newbies alike.

This is my equipment for the microscope photography. The canon 7D, a T-mount, and sometimes a flash. I didn't include the tripod in the photo. The camera is always set to M mode.
Get your mind out of the gutter - it's a rotifer. Taken with 40x objective, this is a rotifer found in the dogs' water dish.
This is an experiment with flash - attempting to capture those moving cilia.
The only thing that does not work in this microscope, is the optics... Although LEGO has produced a magnifying glass brick, I never even took an attempt at getting something between a 20- and 600-fold magnification from them...
This is a run-of-the-mill inverted microscope; an instrument you will find on any laboratory where tissue cultures are handled. It is inverted because with a normal microscope one looks down on the specimen. An inverted microscope allows the user to look from below the sample. With the thick dishes, flasks and plates used for tissue culture, and with a volume of nutrients on top of it, a lense can come a lot closer to the specimen from below! Getting closer, means higher magnifications are possible.

De la taille d'un petit protozoaire, les gastrotriches comme les rotifères, n'en sont pas moins des animaux pluricellulaire. Recouverts d'une cuticule ciliée, ils appartiennent à l'ensemble des cuticulates qui comprennent entre autre, les tardigrades et le grand groupe des arthropodes. Chaetonotus mesure environ 100 microns et présente des cils ventraux qui servent à la locomotion. Le dos est couvert d'écailles et d'épines 4 fois plus grandes dans la moitié postérieure. L'extrémité postérieure est fourchue. Le tube digestif montre antérieurement un pharynx musculeux dont on perçoit les contractions rapides sous forme d'un "éclair" blanc extrêmement fugace. La bouche, sous forme d'un orifice circulaire, reste ouverte à l'avant de l'animal.

みかんの皮を削り取って顕微鏡で覗いてみると、みかん色のつぶつぶがいっぱい細胞に詰まっていて、まるで宝石箱のようだ。
この写真はかなりコントラストとトーンカーブをいじっているので、さすがに肉眼でこんな感じには見えないけども……。
