Microchip Technology's Fanie Duvenhage (Director of Marketing, Applications & Architecture) accepts VDC Research’s annual "Embeddy" award for best in show, hardware category at the Embedded Systems Conference (ESC) in Boston on Sept. 28, 2011. Microchip won the award for the Sept. 26 announcement of its new 8-bit PIC10F(LF)32X and PIC1XF(LF)150X microcontrollers, which feature integrated configurable logic in 6- to 20-pin packages—enabling functionality that was not possible before with low pincount MCUs.

The PICkit™ 2 18-pin Demonstration Board (part # DM164120-4) provides a quick and easy way to evaluate and develop with the PIC16(L)F1826/7 MCUs. The board includes four LEDs, a potentiometer for an Analog-to-Digital Converter (ADC), a pushbutton, a prototyping area, a 6-pin connector for the PICkit 3 In-Circuit Debugger/Programmer (part # PG164130), as well as two bare boards for designers to use for their own project. The Serial Peripheral Interface (SPI) is one of the popular embedded serial communications widely supported by many of today’s chip manufacture and it considered as one of the fastest serial data transfer interface for the embedded system. Microchip Technology's 8-bit, low-cost, Enhanced Mid-range Core PIC16F1516/7/8/9 and PIC16F1526/7 (PIC16F15XX) microcontrollers (MCUs) feature eXtreme Low Power (XLP) technology for sleep currents down to 20 nA, which lowers overall power consumption and extends battery life. An on-chip 10-bit Analog-to-Digital Converter (ADC) with up to 30 channels enables mTouch™ capacitive touch-sensing keys and sliders, and high-resolution touch-screen designs. Up to two each of EUSART, I2C™, and SPI ports enable communication with on-board peripherals. They are ideal for cost-sensitive applications in the consumer (e.g. DVD players, cell phones, MP3 players); automotive (e.g. dashboards, gauges, on-board sensors), home appliance (e.g. washing machines, refrigerators, TV remote controls), and other markets.
Microchip's latest 2.4 GHz 256-QAM RF high-power amplifier—the SST12CP21—offers ultra low EVM and current consumption for 256-QAM and IEEE 802.11n systems. The SST12CP21 delivers high linear output power of up to 23 dBm at 1.75% dynamic EVM, with MCS9 HT40 MHz bandwidth modulation at 5V and 320 mA current consumption. Additionally, the SST12CP21 delivers 25 dBm linear power at 3% EVM with only 350 mA current consumption for 802.11g/n applications. This performance significantly extends the range of 802.11b/g/n WLAN and MIMO systems, while consuming extremely low current at the maximum 256-QAM data rate. The SST12CP21 is also spectrum mask compliant up to 28 dBm for 802.11b/g communication. Board space is reduced by the small 3x3x0.55 mm, 16-pin QFN package that matches a popular pin-out. Microchip expanded its stand-alone Real-Time Clock/Calendar (RTCC) portfolio with the new 10-pin, SPI MCP795XX family. These new devices offer many of the same features as the larger 14-pin MCP795WXX family, including superior timekeeping performance.
Reducing overall component count in the system and eliminating the user programming costs for a serial ID make the MCP795XX RTCC family an ideal choice for the handheld, wireless and consumer markets. By including 64 bytes of SRAM, 2 Kbits of EEPROM and a 128-bit Unique ID, which can be ordered blank or preprogrammed with a MAC address, extra memory devices may not be needed. Utility power meters, manufacturing equipment, radios, GPS and hospital instrumentation applications that need accurate time over a broad temperature range will also benefit from the very wide digital trimming range, which can compensate up to 22 seconds per day for crystal frequency drift.
Digital trimming improves the timekeeping accuracy of RTCCs, and a wide digital trimming range provides customers with high accuracy over a large temperature range. Accurate timekeeping is also supported at a decreased power-consumption level, because digital trimming is maintained when the MCP795XX is operating from backup power on the VBAT input. Additionally, these devices join the industry’s only portfolio to distinctively offer a battery-backed RTCC with both power-fail and power-restore timestamps plus three types of non-volatile memory: EEPROM, SRAM and a Unique ID.

The PIC32 Cap Touch Eval Board was added to Microchip Technology's enhanced mTouch™ Cap Touch Evaluation Kit, to enbable development with the 32-bit PIC32 microcontroller family. The kit comes equipped with capacitive touch-sensing keys and sliders, which allows designers to evaluate this interface in their applications using the Windows® OS-based mTouch Diagnostic Tool. This software tool provides an easy-to-use Graphical User Interface (GUI) for developing cap-touch buttons and sliders, and is included in the free MPLAB® Integrated Development Environment. The additional software libraries, source code and other support materials that come with the board further shorten development cycles and reduce design costs.

Microchip's new additions to the 70 MIPS dsPIC33E and PIC24E product families, building on Microchip’s motor control and general-purpose device series that include integrated Op Amps and a Charge Time Measurement Unit (CTMU) for temperature sensing or mTouch™ capacitive touch sensing.
Microchip Technology expanded its 36V digital potentiometer (digipot) portfolio with two new volatile, I2C™ devices—the MCP45HV31 and MCP45HV51 (MCP45HV31-51). These are the industry’s first digipots to offer a 5 kohm resistance with a specified operating voltage of 36V. Additionally, they provide 10V to 36V analog operation and 1.8V to 5.5V digital operation, for systems requiring wide signal swings or high power-supply voltages. The MCP45HV31-51 digipots support both 7-bit and 8-bit resistor configurations, and a high terminal/wiper current, including the ability to sink/source up to 25 mA on all terminal pins for driving larger loads. These features, combined with an extended temperature range of -40°C to +125°C, make the MCP45HV31-51 well suited for a broad range of high-voltage and high-temperature applications, including those in the industrial, automotive and audio markets.
