This scene seemed a fitting metaphor for our current situation; the storm clouds gather and swirl , but in the end, I have faith that those with common sense and the interests of the nation will move our country forward.

Self explanatory.

My son and granddaughter are busy going through 100's of my slides and reporting back on anything of interest.

i am not sure that the family realizes that this can be seen as a metaphor for the family dynamic.

“If we are a metaphor of the universe,

the human couple is the metaphor par excellence,

the point of intersection of all forces

and the seed of all forms.

The couple is time recaptured,

the return to the time before time.”

I was unable to make it to the massive march in London, calling for a second referendum to pull the brexit decision away from the UK's paralysed politicians. So I found an excuse to shoot some stereotypical scenes of destruction that pretty much sum up how I feel about the UK right now...

St. Stephen's Green, Dublin

This was an exhibit featured at Torell Nederland... unfortunately it is already gone otherwise I'd provide a link. :(

This is what happens when I start working on something before I have a clear idea in my head (which I generally don't like doing). I've never been one to "freestyle," so to speak. Sure, it's liberating to grab a piece of marble and just start hacking away at it (this metaphor is not meant to belittle the work of master or even amateur sculptors so much as to convey my absolute lack of knowledge related to the craft), but it's a practice I've never felt completely comfortable with.

This one started off as a simple levitation experiment before taking a rather oddly spiritual turn.

You could argue that freestyling is just another way of honing your craft (and you'd probably be right), but I've come to discover that I'm such an (über) perfectionist that I'll go so far as to expect my very ideas to be stellar notions before embarking on a project. I know, definitely not a good habit to have (too often it results in no project at all).

So this was more of an experiment than anything else. I didn't have a clear direction in mind, but I knew I wanted to work within some parameters. Mainly, I wanted to complete the piece in just a few hours (a single night at the most). I had a few elements to play with which I cobbled together into a single subject.

From there I had the idea to do a levitation-style portrait, since that's the way the posing seemed to be headed. But as with so many ideas, once they get started there's no telling where they'll end up.

I had a few interesting backgrounds in my catalog that have been waiting patiently for the star treatment, so I chose one randomly (or so it seemed). I don't know what this says about me, but it took way too long for me to say (after dropping a levitating subject onto a church background), "Hey, maybe I should make her an angel or spirit figure." But yeah, that made a whole lot more sense in the end.

So here's the finished piece, which I entitled "Just plain ethereal." And yes, it irks me to no end that I've still yet to do a levitation portrait.

This river is massive and moves fast. Such is life, right? … and standing in front of this huge bend in a such a powerful river you can't help but to find parallels with nature and everyday life. I've made more than one massive turn in my life then ultimately lead to a huge cliff and a lot of chaos. But at the bottom of the huge cliff the water keeps moving on. Deep eh?

Or maybe it is just a pretty picture of Yellowstone canyon.

“The amazing thing is that every atom in your body came from a star that exploded. And, the atoms in your left hand probably came from a different star than your right hand. It really is the most poetic thing I know about physics: You are all stardust. You couldn’t be here if stars hadn’t exploded, because the elements - the carbon, nitrogen, oxygen, iron, all the things that matter for evolution - weren’t created at the beginning of time. They were created in the nuclear furnaces of stars, and the only way they could get into your body is if those stars were kind enough to explode. So, forget Jesus. The stars died so that you could be here today.”

— “A Universe From Nothing” by Lawrence Krauss, AAI 2009

“The most tangible comparison is of the neural network of the brain and the intergalactic network of the cosmos. The human brain weighs about 3 pounds and fits between our ears, whereas the universe is, well, a lot bigger. Yet despite this contrast in size, when both of these natural structures are mapped out as a series of connections, they look nearly identical. You can take this even one step further: while the universe is infinitely larger than the brain, and the brain is infinitely larger than a cell, cells seem to produce the same pattern of complexity!”

“…all matter is merely energy condensed to a slow vibration, that we are all one consciousness experiencing itself subjectively, there is no such thing as death, life is only a dream, and we are the imagination of ourselves. Here’s Tom with the weather.”

— Bill Hicks

“We are the way for the cosmos to know itself.”

An interpretation that the universe is not conscious and that there is no great conscious organizer out there, so the universe can’t really reflect on itself because it can’t think. But we as human beings are made from the stuff of stars, all the molecules in our body are traceable to molecular phenomena that exploded in the furnace of a star; so because we are made up of the stuff of stars and because our molecules are organized in such a way to make us “higher-thinking-cognitive- beings” and we can contemplate our place in the vast expanse of the universe, then we are a way for the cosmos to know itself.

Life is but a dream. The universe is in us. Were all connected to each other biologically; the earth chemically; to the universe atomically. The beauty in living is how the atoms are are put together, the cosmos in us; in a way, we are the way for the cosmos to know itself.

We are made up of stardust. The highest mass stars, we are made out of their atoms. Their explosions create the next generation of new solar systems. The explosions scatter their atoms and create the ingredients for new planets and stars. Our own atoms are traceable to the explosions of the highest mass stars! The atoms from the death of a star that creates new solar systems of new life are the same that are in us! The universe is in us. You right now, you are a mixture of stardust, you’re made from explosions in the sky.

So its like separation is an illusion, where we feel separate but are actually one thing, but just live divided. No death, life is just a dream and we are the imagination of ourselves. Like a quantum entanglement of atoms separated through space. Like each one of us a individual blood cell of a whole body; different parts of a unified whole. Like one consciousness observing itself individually; everyone you meet is you framed in another series of experiences. Like one organism seeing itself through different minds. Like one consciousness experiencing itself subjectively. It’s like life is but a dream.

We evoke the entire universe. We evoke light; with no eyes the sun would not be light. We evoke sound; with no ears, vibrations would not produce a noise. Our muscles bring heaviness into being. We are creating what is.

We’re made up of something above us that makes us a part of the universe that we encompass.

We are the same physical structures (bodies), encompassing and living the same environment (Earth), and our atoms are traceable to the stars (the cosmos). We are united through all scales. We’re not so much individuals, but act as a whole through our interactions and experiences with one another. Like we’re one thing viewing each other separately, although with different sets of mentalities. Like our thoughts are contributing to an entire consciousness making it a whole; a collection of thoughts, ideas, and experiences through different minds compiling and working together. One organism seeing itself through different minds experiencing this dimension as one evolving idea and consciousness.

We are stardust.

A pale pink rose and an homage to Georgia O'Keefe. There is a metaphor in there somewhere.

This series of three shots shows pairs of tundra swans rising, flying, and descending. Life is like that, don't you think?

Both column pairings are real. They are positioned in the opposite corners of the room.
