At last a seal with an inscription that can be read! The central design is a crossbow. And the inscription reads *S'ROB'TI.DE.PEIRIE~~:

Seal of Roberti De Peirie.

There is a good chance of a link to Roberti in the following text...

"PERRYWOOD and HARESFIELD are two manors in the south-west part of this parish, the former of which is called Perie in the general survey of Domesday....

After the consiscation of the bishop's estates, in 1084, this estate seems to have come into the possession of owners, who assumed their surname from it. One of these, Randal de Pirie, held this manor in the reign of king John, as did his descendant William de Pirie in that of king Edward II. but in the 20th year of king Edward III. this family was extinct here..."

Its amazing to see the incredible condition of this coin considering its close to being nearly 1700 years since it was minted and then lost in the soil.

VIRTVS EXERCIT ( In honor of the valor of the army) reverse depicting two captives seated under a standard inscribed VOT XX and this is a London mint coin.

For a time at the end of the third century Roman coins were actually struck at a mint in London. This London mint set up by the Romans is the earliest recorded mint in the capital of England, but it functioned for no more than 40 years. Although it reopened in the year 383, it must have closed again almost at once.

Constantine II was the 60th emperor of the Roman empire.
