Day of the Hawks. This is a post medieval hawking whistle we found on a hill (by Upper Stanton Drew) very near Stanton Drew Stone Circle, Somerset, last weekend, while on a metal detecting dig (03.11.24). To think that it was once used here and the sound it produced floated over that ancient circle is fascinating. We have managed to get it working/whistling once more but it’s not easy, there’s certainly a knack to using it. Also interesting to see it has the characteristics of a bird within its design.

My first finds in 2009, and this is my best one time find too. This was found in a wooded area, was this a hiding place, did someone drop this a long time ago. Stay tuned, I will be sorting, cleaning and counting them this week, so check back.
This pile is laying on my floor board, I know you can not tell but my guess is there is more than 1000 of them.

Some of my better personal finds. Most were found with a metal detector, but some (the stone points, for instance) were eyeballed. All were found in western Massachusetts.
I found this beautiful Roman Sestersius on my permission near Winchester. It is Emperor Commodus and was struck AD 181-2. Some poor Roman dropped this almost 2000 years ago, and it is a BIG coin- It weighs 21g and is 3cm across. It is RIC III 325a - recorded with FLO finds.org.uk/database/artefacts/record/id/1074562

I found this Trajan Decius Antoninianus metal detecting over the weekend. It looks pretty good, for almost 1800 years old!
This is described as RIV IV No26 "IMP C M Q TRAIANVS DECIVS AVG: Bust of Trajan Decius, radiate, draped, cuirassed, right Reverse - PANNONIAE: The two Pannoniae, both veiled, draped, standing right and left, facing each other, clasping right hands before standard in centre. #metaldetecting #roman #coin #ORX #xpdetectors #trajanDecius #antoninianus #history
A friend who is a very knowledgeable metal detectorist asked if he could explore our field, he was really pleased to have found this - me too, exciting.
I used to do a lot of Metal Detecting and these are just two of the hundreds of bits of history i have found . The top artifact is a Middle Bronze age cast copper alloy non looped Palstave c 1450- 1250 BC. Mainly used for digging and chopping. it would have been attached to a wooden handle . I found it on the local recreation field along with about 300 hundred coins from George 1st to the present day. The Spear Head below and wood from the shaft , c 2300-700 BC was found by pure accident . While walking back to the car after a days metal detecting I left the metal detector on and it gave of a very loud signal . This normally means a coke can or some rubbish close to the surface. I turned the first few inches of soil over and out came the spear head. I was on the edge of a pond at the time and on closer inspection i could see there was some thing inside the shaft of the spear head . When i got home i carefully managed to remove what it was . To my amazement it was the remains of the last shaft of wood which made up the Spear all those years ago . I found out later that up until very recently the spear head had been in the pond and recent dredging had exposed it which is why the wood in the shaft survived so long . My local Museum recorded the finds and sent them to Winchester conservators so they could be studied and treated to prevent deterioration. I was told by the museum that the spear head may well have been thrown into the pond as an offering to the gods or it might just have been lost while hunting . They added to lose some thing like this would have been a massive loss ,Bronze tools and weapons were highly prized . Hope you found it interesting .
A perfect October day fishing the Claydon Brook.
I caught a movement on the opposite bank and saw this guy wandering up and down looking for treasure.
On Sunday I found this silver hammered Charles II Half Groat coin whilst metal detecting in Southern Hampshire. It is extra interesting because it is "double struck", so the imprint on it is doubled. This tiny coin is from 1660-1662, and has waited for 360 years for me to find it!

Today, whilst metal detecting at Middle Wallop in Hampshire, I found this tiny silver lapel badge from the first World War. It id from "The 107th (Timber Wolf) Battalion, Canadian Expeditionary Force", made up of mainly Indigenous Canadians in 1915, sent to Britain in 1916- then fought in France, and disbanded in 1920. So this tiny badge has been waiting in the soil for at least 100 years for me to find :) ( Sorry I have not been posting my photos, stay tuned!)
