In honor of this Full Moon in Gemini December 4-5th, 2006. As we move toward the Winter Solstice, I chose this rose photo taken in June to highlight a series on Light and Darkness @ www.gemfireair.com

Might re-upload as flickr seems to do some sharpening...looks less edgy on photoshop than here.
Mesa Verde was such a unique national park to visit. Hidden in the landscape are these ancient cliff dwellings and several archeological sites of a people from long ago. Remarkably preserved for its age, it was a great experience to be up close to these structures that up until recently, I've only seen in magazines. Here's a look up into one of the structures.
Absolutely swamped with photos to process, many from my Utah trip and most recently from the Jones Beach Air-show. So still slowly catching up on all my contacts work from the last months while I was Flickr AWOL :D

Canyonlands National Park is a U.S. National Park located in eastern Utah near the city of Moab and preserves a colorful landscape eroded into countless canyons, mesas and buttes by the Colorado River, the Green River, and their respective tributaries. The rivers divide the park into four districts: the Island in the Sky, the Needles, the Maze and the rivers themselves. While these areas share a primitive desert atmosphere, each retains its own character. The park covers 527.5 square miles (1,366 km2). Canyons are carved into the Colorado Plateau by the Colorado River and Green River. Author Edward Abbey, a frequent visitor, described the Canyonlands as "the most weird, wonderful, magical place on earth—there is nothing else like it anywhere."
Canyonlands is a popular recreational destination. Over 400,000 people visited the park in 2008. The geography of the park is well suited to a number of different recreational uses. Hikers, mountain bikers, backpackers, and four-wheelers all enjoy traversing the rugged, remote trails within the Park. Rafters and kayakers float the calm stretches of the Green River and Colorado River above the confluence. Below the confluence Cataract Canyon contains powerful whitewater rapids, similar to those found in the Grand Canyon.
The Island in Sky district, with its proximity to the Moab, Utah area, attracts the majority (59 percent) of park users. The Needles district is the second most visited, drawing 35 percent of visitors. The rivers within the park and the remote Maze district each only account for 3 percent of park visitation.
Political compromise at the time of the park's creation limited the protected area to an arbitrary portion of the Canyonlands basin. Conservationists hope to complete the park by bringing the boundaries up to the high sandstone rims that form the natural border of the Canyonlands landscape.

Day 4 of 5 day road trip - Cortez, CO to Montrose CO... These photos by my grand daughter - KK - navigator and resident photographer for the balance of the trip. Early morning start, stop for a dozen doughnuts and away we go! Passed a mule deer and three black bears as we ascended the plateau at Mesa Verde on the way to the Ancestral Pueblo civilization. Fascinating step back in time... Close-up photos at 500mm are by me.
I'm really enjoying going through these old images and finding some gems.

After driving hours in pitch black darkness, locating a nondescript trail head and hiking across an arid landscape in pitch blackness, mother nature didn't let us down as the sun rose behind Mesa Arch, Utah.
Sunbeams appear over the La Sal Mountains, Buck Canyon, and the Colorado River just after sunrise. These images were taken from Mesa Arch after a short early morning hike in Canyonlands National Park, Utah.
One point to mention is the bright orange color on the underside of the arch. While it may look strange, it actually comes from light reflected off the rocks in the foreground. Makes for a pretty neat scene!
Checkerboard Mesa is a Navajo Sandstone rock formation in Zion National Park, Utah.
Viewed from Zion-Mount Carmel Highway.
Done from a drawing I did at Mesa Verde. I can't remember which ruin, I think it was Long House.

This is Mesa Arch, it wasn't the best day. We had pretty terrible weather when we visited Canyonlands National Park. It was always cloudy and there was a time when it started raining ice pellets.

The colossal, flat mountain tops that remained green all year round were how this National Park got its name. Besides its iconic massive cliff dwellings, the landscape here, especially during sunset, was equally breathtaking.
