I've seen hundreds of photos of this spot at sunrise and, truthfully, I've never been too excited to photograph it, perhaps because it's just been overdone. We had what looked like a bust of a sunrise, all gray and cold skies. My pal Evan and I had been at this location reserving our tripod space for hours (yep, that's how popular it is). We decided to call it a day, seeing there wouldn't be any color in the sunrise, so we started our hike back to the car. Suddenly, the sun's rays exploded through the clouds, illuminating the red sandstone just below the arch, radiating the warm color inside the arch. My eyes began to tear up. Not from the extreme cold, extreme wind and windblown sand, but from the incredible beauty that was unfolding before my eyes. Just unforgettable.

The 1916 Mesa Schoolhouse, located south of Steamboat Springs, is an excellent local example of the early 20th century rural schoolhouse building type. Constructed as the Mesa District’s permanent school, the building reflects the development of the Yampa Valley and its commitment to education. In the south Yampa Valley area, Germans, French-Swiss, and Irish immigrants attended classes with children from older generation immigrant families. Like most rural schools, the Mesa Schoolhouse played a major role in the assimilation process. Although intended to provide a place for education for the children of the Mesa District, it also became the social center of the small agricultural community. School district consolidation closed the Mesa Schoolhouse in 1959.

Sin lugar a dudas una de las cosas que más me gustan de Italia es su gastronomía, que no sólo consiste en pasta y pizza. Y si el lugar donde disfrutas de la comida es tan acogedor como éste, la experiencia es inolvidable.

"Overcast Mesa"

This particular morning was a lame sunrise due to overcast skies, yet the even lighting helped capture the foreground and deep into the background. Surprisingly the reflective light from the canyon floor shone right up to the underbelly of Mesa Arch.

To capture this location requires patience, not only to get the right light, but due to crowds. On this day I arrived with a colleague, Dustin LeFevre, at 3:00AM --- Yes, we were the first ones there, but we were quickly joined by a fellow photographer at 4:00, then by 6:00 there were twenty! Wow!

Took a hike up to one of the Mesa's today... This would probably be a nice place for sunset, but I hiked it midday so it was hot, and had none of the nice light found here at sunset...

And here's the view from the top of the ladder exiting Balcony House. This is same girl who looked so afraid of standing near the edge of the pit sprinting up the ladder like it's no big deal.

Mesa Arch in Canyonlands National Park, Utah. A really good arch to walk up to, a really bad arch to walk 10 foor beyond, you would find yourself astounded by your own mortality

Mesa Verde National Park is a fantastic area to discover and learn about the Ancestral Puebloens of the Four Corners area. This shot is from Balcony House. This tour requires the ability to climb several wooden ladders made of trees to get to the site, one of which is 35ft tall.

I got one good sunrise during my four days in Moab so the decision was easy to spend it photographing sunrise at Mesa Arch in Canyonlands National Park. Even more incredible than the sunrise, I had the entire arch to myself. I was stunned that the most popular sunrise location in the Moab area was empty when I arrived. The second photographer to arrive showed up 10 minutes after the glow was gone from the underside of the arch.

This is the last shot from the National Parks portion of my trip that I'm going to post here. If you would like to see more, please visit my website www.msummersphotography.com and check out the Mesa Verde, Arches and Canyonlands galleries in the Landscape section.

Tomorrow I'll be back to the regularly scheduled Disney photos with this week's Fireworks Friday post.
